Introductions Made. Previous meeting minutes approved.

2 New Business: Communications Update: (Sandra Dinardi, Information Systems Division) Sandra introduced the County s Facebook account and explained how the social network could help us disseminate information on our green endeavors. She offered to post on behalf of the group until individual departments appoint employees to manage their pages. Training will be provided, including security and County restrictions. Facebook posts are now outnumbering s, and we can t afford to ignore this media as a way to reach our residents and businesses. Fax Server: (Ralph Cordero, Information Systems Division) Ralph explained how the fax server can be used to save money and resources. Using a server in lieu of a fax machine would mean less labor, less toner, less maintenance, less replacement cost, less electricity, less heat signature, less paper, and less printing of unwanted faxes. Several departments currently use a fax server. Ralph gave a demonstration on the ease of using the server. (Ralph s presentation has been posted to the County Green website at Old Business: Green Business Certification: (Elisa Moberly, Public Works) Elisa asked for updates from represented departments. Initial meetings have been held to certify the Admin Building. The Sheriff s Department and EEDD have requested REACON assessments. Public Works has presented the program to their directors and received direction on forming the department committee. Featured Department - EEDD: (John Solis, Employment and Economic Development Department - Worknet) John s team consists of the director (John), deputies and managers, with plans to recruit others as needed. Their main goals are the development of a department policy and the establishment of an action plan with measurable objectives. Plans include promoting carpools and alternative transportation to/from work, encouraging staff involvement with awards and recognition, use of electronic files and s to eliminate printing, and increasing recycling. They have already recognized the need for staff training and recommend that the County Green Committee develop a training program for new and existing employees. (Details on EEDD s progress have been posted to the County Green website at and attached at the end of these minutes). ASSIGNMENT: Formation of a sub-committee to prepare a training program. Raffle: (David Louis) David donated a recycled glass coffee mug and gift certificate from Starbucks as a raffle prize for today s attendees. The cup was won by Lisa Felix of the District Attorney s office.

Overview was provided to the Green Committee: EEDD GREEN COMMITTEE MEETING NOTES FOR MONDAY, JULY 19, 2010 History The County of San Joaquin has established a Green Policy for San Joaquin County and will move towards getting a Green Certification. This will require all County Departments to develop a Green Policy and Action Plan which will have strategic objectives and performance measurements. The Board of Supervisors will require an annual report from the County s Green Team Committee apprizing them of the County s progress in going green and providing performance outcomes. A. A copy of the County s Green Policy and report was forwarded to the EEDD Green Committee for their review and information. B. Committee objectives include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Develop a department-wide Green Policy and Action Plan that will establish measurable objectives that are consistent with County policy and support a green certification. 2. Develop reasonable Green Policies that are measurable with sufficient direction to ensure departmentwide implementation. C. EEDD Green Committee Make-up - The EEDD Director, Deputies and Managers will make up the EEDD Green Committee to oversee the development of our Departmental Green Policies and strategies. Additional members shall be added as recommended. D. Meeting Schedule First Wednesday of the month from 8:30 9:30 a.m. We ll meet monthly for the first four months. Thereafter, the meeting will be held quarterly. II. Results of the EEDD Green Committee s Discussion and Brainstorming Session A. Implementation Strategies Recommendations 1. Required Training on Green Policies Provide training for all staff to familiarize them with the County s new Green Policy and departmental Green Policies. a. The County needs to develop training for new staff. b. Departments should provide a Green Policy orientation to every employee. 2. Green Video Library The County should start developing a video library on green activities that all county departments can check out and make available for staff. 3. Education Forums The County/Department should hold Green workshops to educate staff on what is green from Green purchases to recycling.

5 4. Awards for Going Green Get staff involved by providing an award for the best Green suggestion. Have a suggestion box. Establish criteria for the award. Awards can be anything from certificates, plaques to a dinner certificate for two. 5. Designate someone to be the Project Coordinator. (Get someone in charge get a volunteer.) B. Green Policy Suggestions 1. Invite Green organizations to help educate the Department about going Green and Green Certification 2. Increase Green purchases without compromising quality and the budget. 3. Program copy machines to automatically print back-to-back. 4. Establish a more aggressive recycling policy. 5. Promote car pooling through policies and rewards. 6. Promote riding bicycles to work. 7. If employees get electric vehicles, the County will have outlets to recharge the vehicle in designated areas. 8. Recycling separate the recyclables like paper glass bottles and cans from the rest of the trash. 9. Use bio-friendly cleaning products. 10. Make our procurement instruments more Green friendly. 11. Provide compost containers for use at home. 12. Scan and release via Assign a volunteer to lead the charge.
