2 SPORTS VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME Would you like to... Enhance your employability? Do something rewarding? Develop your leadership and communication skills? Gain valuable qualifications? Sports Volunteering at Newcastle The sports volunteer programme offers many opportunities for students to enhance their time at Newcastle as well as gaining valuable experience delivering sport within local schools and the community. Employers are always looking for that bit extra which you can bring to their company and this is what the sports volunteer programme aims to give students; that little bit extra which makes you stand out from the crowd. Students can volunteer in coaching, event management, officiating and mentoring. Volunteering gives you the chance to develop new skills as well as utilise ones you already have. In return for your hard work and dedication the volunteer programme gives you the opportunity to gain valuable coaching and officiating qualifications. The sports volunteer programme continues to grow from strength to strength being a valuable asset to the local community. The programme is an excellent way of enriching your student experience here at Newcastle and give something back to the community you live and study in. I coach netball in a primary school, the children are so enthusiastic all the time it s so much fun!

3 The Benefits In return for your hard work, dedication and enthusiasm you will receive incentives such as; Gain valuable experience Increase your employability Gain national governing body qualifications Meet new people Free CRB check Free Sports kit provided Travel expenses reimbursed Opportunity to gain additional academic credit through the Career Development module During the past year the Volunteer Programme has been engaged with a variety of different partners with numerous activities such as; Schools Working within local primary and secondary schools students have delivered and helped in the delivery of many different sports for example; netball, football, indoor rowing and dance to name a few! Events Volunteers have helped to deliver a series of events across the region including the Northumberland Schools Indoor Rowing Finals and the Regional Disability Athletics Finals. Women Only Sessions Volunteers have helped deliver weekly exercise classes to a group of women with the community, volunteers focus on building confidence and self esteem within the group. Officiating Volunteers have helped to officiate several leagues within the region for example; Regional High 5 Schools Netball Finals and the Regional Schools Volleyball competition.

4 NEW Opportunity for 2012/13! Newcastle University GO PLAY Programme GO PLAY is ran through the students union and is the perfect way to start a new sport. Sport sessions are throughout the year for blocks of 6 weeks, participants range from complete beginners to people looking to get back into sport. This year GO PLAY is looking to extend their programme with the help of the volunteer programme. Volunteer coaches are needed for a variety of roles which can be anything from coaching the sessions to planning a brand new sport programme. Examples of GO PLAY activities Netball Lacrosse Dodgeball Basketball Rounders Golf Cricket Fresh ideas of new sports are always welcome, as are beginner coaches looking to gain experience or if you are already experienced in a particular sport just let us know, there are opportunities for everyone! In return for your hard work there are opportunities through GO PLAY and the volunteer programme to gain NGB coaching and officiating qualifications in your chosen sport. 5 INTERNATIONAL SPORTS VOLUNTEERING MAD about SPORT Sport is a universal language. At its best it can bring people together, no matter what their origin, background, religious beliefs or economic status. UN Secretary General Kofi Anna The Volunteer Programme is seeking 8 volunteers to take the trip of a lifetime and make a real difference in the developing world. The MAD about SPORT project requires enthusiastic, fun, energetic students who will spend 4 weeks in Ada Foah, Ghana and will throw themselves into this unique programme to teach swimming and either football or netball which is the primary focus of the trip. As well as teaching during school time volunteers will hold after school sports clubs and organise tournaments for the community and surrounding islands. Additionally volunteers will work on beach maintenance and safety for the community. Students must be able to... Commit to fundraising the target amount of 1000 each under the guidance of the volunteer programme and Madventurer. Commit to the training needs of the project which includes; gaining NGB coaching qualification in either football or netball (funded by the volunteer programme), first aid qualification and cultural awareness workshops. Spend 4 weeks in Ghana in the summer of 2013 with 7 other like minded students under the supervision of a team leader/crew Member. Coach netball or football whilst in Ghana, fully engross yourself in the project and get involved as much as possible in the local community. 6 Meet Sports Volunteer Tarren Smarr What type of volunteering are you involved in? I have worked with several different groups throughout Newcastle and Gateshead and in various activities including netball tournaments and rowing events. Working with the Newcastle programme has even led me to additional opportunities in the surrounding community such as participating as a volunteer in the UK School Games. What s your favourite part of volunteering? Working with and meeting new people is my favourite part of volunteering. It is nice to work with people who are passionate about either their sport or volunteering in general. It is also nice to meet and interact with the people who are benefiting from volunteering. As an athlete I know how important volunteers can be in order for an event to be successful. Now it is my turn to give back. Get Involved today!
