Officer Nomination Information Save the Date Flyers ASCE s 11 th Annual Legislative Fly-In ASCE held the 11th Annual Legislative Fly-In this year from March 29th-31st in Washington, DC. ASCE members representing all four corners of the country flew in to lobby their state representatives and senators on issues that affect the Civil Engineering industry. The Fly-In began on Tuesday with a beginner's orientation session followed by a welcome reception later that evening. Fly-In training began early Wednesday with an intense focus on legislative issues and Capitol Hill Visit Training. Once those sessions were completed, Congressional visits began and continued into Thursday. Each ASCE participant attended three meetings. They included meeting with the participant's Representative and Senators for their state. The Fly-In concluded on Thursday with speech from Representative Steven C. LaTourette (R-OH) encouraging the participants to stay involved and active in advocacy. The issues discussed this year were; The Surface Transportation Authorization, The National Dam Safety Act Reauthorization, the enactment of Dam Rehabilitation Legislation, the repeal of the Three Percent Withholding Tax (HR 674/S 164), and the enactment of a National Infrastructure Bank Act (HR 402/ S652). The American Society of Civil Engineers has adopted official Policy Statements, Position Papers and Resolutions on major technical, professional and educational issues of interest to the civil engineering community and the nation. There are 168 policy documents that cover priorities such as clean water, drinking water, & wastewater issues; natural hazards mitigation; qualifications based selection; science, technology, engineering & math (stem) education; sustainable development & sustainable energy use; and surface transportation authorization. While many of these terms seem more relevant to engineering than politics, I would like to encourage you to become better educated on the legislative process and legislative issues; develop relationships with local, state and federal elected officials; and get involved in the process by utilizing seeking positions on advisory boards, technical advisory committees and running for elected office. By the way, only three of 120 State Representatives are engineers, yet the need for engineering expertise has continued to grow. I would be happy to discuss or research issues that matter to you. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to learn more about subjects such as Senate Bill 288 relating to design professional limited liability; Senate Bill 276 relating to procurement of professional services; or HB 1155 relating to the State Transportation Trust Fund. 8 Volunteer Opportunity Jax Beach Cleanup April 16 th 2011 From 8:30 am to 10:30 am PLEASE SEE THE ATTACHED FLYERS FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION West Point Bridge Design Contest The West Point Bridge Design Contest is a competition that provides middle school and high school students with a realistic, engaging introduction to engineering. Using free online software, students design, build and test virtual truss bridges while trying to maintain the lowest cost. The ASCE Jacksonville Branch is hosting its own local competition! Students can compete online and the top 6 scores for middle and high school students will compete at UNF for prizes. Please see the attached flyer for more information. If you have any contacts with middle or high school teachers, feel free to spread the word and pass along the flyer! 5

9 The American Society of Civil Engineers Jacksonville Branch and the United States Military Academy Presents How It Works THE WEST POINT BRIDGE DESIGN CONTEST The West Point Bridge Design Contest is a competition intended to promote math, science and technology education in middle schools and high schools. The students will design a virtual truss bridge with the lowest cost using the designer software. The contest provides students with a realistic introduction to engineering through an engaging, hands-on design experience. Participation is free and students may compete individually or in teams of two. Download the West Point Bridge Designer 2011 software from the website: IT S FREE!! Register for the West Point Bridge Design Contest at Be sure to enter the Local Code (shown below) to be entered in the local competition!! Use the software to design, test, and optimize a highway bridge. Submit your designs to the contest website prior to April 26, Enter as many designs as you wish. You can view the local contest scoreboard at the websites shown below. Score is based on lowest bridge cost. The top 6 winners from the local online competition from both the Middle School and High School divisions will compete in May at UNF for $ cash $ prizes!!! Winners of the local competition at UNF will get a chance to compete at the state competition.
