7 ENGINEERS WEEK IN REVIEW Robert Jackson, PE 2011 E Week Committee Chairperson In Jacksonville we celebrate Engineers Week with a combination of joint luncheons and outreach programs with a heavy emphasis on education in Math and Sciences. Through our many events, we encourage our youth to understand the importance of engineering and to consider engineering as a career choice. We typically work closely with the University of North Florida College of Computing, Engineering, and Construction to promote engineering in a number of ways. Engineers Week 2011 was a great success in this endeavor, and included several events prior to the official E Week Kick Off. On Friday, February 4 th,several engineers joined the Mentoring Family and Kids Organization for a panel discussion about engineering, hosted by Haskell. Local professionals spoke about their passion, up bringing bi i and what ht a young student t should expect as they pursue a degree in engineering. Saturday, February 12 th marked our fifth year hosting the Engineering Merit Badge Clinic. In association with UNF, a group of engineers provided engineering related workshops and toured testing facilities that helped a record high 120 Boy Scouts earn their Engineering Merit Badge. On Wednesday, February 16 th, SMPS/WTS held a joint breakfast at the UNF University Center. This event included a panel discussion on the topic of regional transportation plans and opportunities. On Thursday, February 17 th a Joint Engineering Society Social was held at Sneaker s Sport Grill. An estimated 80 professionals attended and enjoyed an evening of mixing and mingling with their fellow peers. More than 10 companies and associations donated funds that allowed us to raffle off complimentary tickets to the banquet. A good time was had by all. E Week officially began with the Kick Off Luncheon last Friday, February 18 th. The luncheon was hosted by ASCE and attended by about 200 engineers and students. We were honored by Jeff Beck, PE, Deputy Public Works Director for the City of Jacksonville, who presented the Mayor s Proclamation recognizing National Engineers Week in Jacksonville. Back by popular demand was the UNF Vendors Showcase, where several vendors displayed innovative products for the perusal of all the engineers and students in attendance. As always, the highlight of the luncheon was when twelve engineering societies, the E Week Planning Committee, and nine endowed engineering scholarships presented approximately 45 scholarships to area high school seniors and college engineering students. 7

8 Continued On Monday, February 21 st,e Week was in full swing with the Annual Golf Outing, hosted by FES at the St. Johns Golf and Country Club. A course full of engineers teed off, driving to raise money for the E Week scholarships. Although some of our skills were not up to par, everyone had fun benefitting the scholarship program. Throughout the week a number of engineering society meetings were held. The joint ASCE/FES/SAME luncheons as well as the ASME luncheon were held on Tuesday. The ASHE/APWA joint luncheon was held on Thursday. The AREMA lunch and golf outing and the ACI dinner meeting were additional Thursday events. As always, UNF hosted a number of E Week events, including MATHCOUNTS. MATHCOUNTS, sponsored by the Northeast Florida Chapter of FES and UNF FES Student Chapter, took place on Friday with the largest completion to date in the state of Florida. 50 schools with over 400 junior high school students competed in mathematic excellence competition. This is a national coaching and competition program that promotes 6 th,7 th and 8 th grade math achievement in every U.S. state. Friday was also the Army Corps of Engineers Engineering Career Day. This was another record attendance event this year, as high school teams from the tricounty area visited information booths set up by local companies. The students also competed in one planned competition project and presentation, as well as a surprise problem. Hopefully you all had a chance to participate in some of these special events as we had another great Engineers Week in Northeast Florida. As always, we wrapped up our E Week Celebration with a banquet to honor our local professionals in their achievements throughout the community. It has truly been an honor to serve as this year s chair and I would like to sincerely thank my fellow committee members and their respective societies and companies for all of their hard work and dedication in making this a memorable Engineers Week. 8
