2 DEAR FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES: Welcome to By the Numbers from the Division of Student Affairs! This publication is a snapshot of the division s programs and events for the academic year. Each year Student Affairs monitors our outreach and student support in quantifiable ways. Through Student Affairs services, programs, and educational experiences, every student has opportunities for meaningful experiences leading and serving others, and for developing morally, ethically, and spiritually. These experiences enhance students academic abilities, bolstering their chances for success at Bellarmine and beyond. Every student should have a sense of belonging, knowing that they are a valuable member of the Bellarmine community. In Veritatis Amore, HELEN GRACE RYAN, Ph.D. VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS We incorporate Bellarmine values into all we do. OUR VALUES Bellarmine University is an independent Catholic university educating talented, diverse students with respect for each individual s intrinsic value and dignity. We exist to educate the whole person to realize his or her potential as part of an interconnected world. Our values are Hospitality, Illumination, Inspiration and Inclusive Spirit of Thomas Merton. Hospitality Student Affairs embraces new people and new ideas with openness and generosity of spirit, because we value the intrinsic dignity of each person as an individual, and each individual as a whole person. This characterizes our approach to teaching, to learning and to life. Illumination Student Affairs is dedicated to the pursuit of enlightenment and understanding, by helping people develop critical thinking and to teach people how to think, not what to think. Inspiration Student Affairs believes that as a community of teachers and learners, we provide life-changing experiences that educate and enhance. Merton Spirit Student Affairs promotes Bellarmine s mission to find its Catholic identity in the inclusive spirit of Thomas Merton. We believe in the search for the true self, the interconnectedness of life and the solidarity of the human spirit, which transcends ethnic, religious and social divisions.

5 ATHLETICS Throughout my time at Bellarmine as a student-athlete, I felt a sense of community both inside of the classroom and on the field. 25 RESIDENCE LIFE Being a part of a family oriented community like that of Bellarmine s becomes contagious. As a community member, I can attest that without residential life, Bellarmine would lose a defining feature in its work to build a well-rounded individual through a liberal arts education. Kaleb S. 20 PETRIK HALL RESLIFE@BELLARMINE.EDU GREEN MOVE OUT INITIATIVE: La Casita, Kentucky Refugee Ministries and Habitat for Humanity ReStore received $2,694 worth of donations collectively, and Dare to Care received pounds of non-perishable food items. 27 SERVICE & LEADERSHIP My experience in Selma helped to expand my horizon past the four walls of the classroom and, more importantly, past the singular environment of Bellarmine. While our campus provides a tremendously fertile ground for academic and personal growth, it is only through service and leadership experiences that students are able to attain higher understanding as we delve into the communities of those who have gained life experiences far removed from our own. Drew C. 19 STUDENT ACTIVITIES CENTER, TREECE HALL-023 BWILSON4@BELLARMINE.EDU 5 DOMESTIC ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK SERVICE STUDENT EXPERIENCES: Selma Race Relations & Civil Rights; New Orleans Disaster Relief; Charleston, SC Food Security; David, KY Rural Education & Youth Empowerment; and Maryville, TN Sustainability & Native Culture in Appalachia. 22k 22,470+ HOURS OF SERVICE COMPLETED 72 FIRST-YEAR AND SOPHOMORE STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE INAUGURAL YEAR OF THE BELLARMINE LEADERSHIP CERTIFICATE PROGRAM 328 POUNDS OF FOOD ITEMS DONATED TO THE LOCAL FOOD BANK, Dare to Care, as part of the Student Government Association led CanTober event 720+ STUDENTS, FACULTY, STAFF AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS ATTENDED THE CONSTITUTION DAY keynote address by nationally recognized community activist, Bree Newsome. 29 STUDENT ACTIVITIES It s easy to get caught up in school work, but being involved helps me form relationships with faculty and students outside my major. It gives me a sense of belonging at Bellarmine. Jess B.
