This year all of these tests will be taken on computer on April 8 and 9. While the juniors are testing those days the rest of the student body has a variety of activities scheduled. The seniors will have their annual retreat with staff from Youth Frontiers out of the Twin Cities on April 8. Thanks go to the Senior Parent Organization for paying for the event and to the Brandon Lutheran Church for providing April 2015 a place for the retreat. A series of breakout sessions are planned for seniors on April 9 that are intended to prepare them for life after high school. Dr. Gregg Talcott, Principal Gregg.Talcott@k12.sd.us The sophomores will take the ASPIRE test which is like a pre-act test and is used to help them to determine where they need to focus their academic efforts to improve their ACT results. They will use their non-testing time to attend a variety of breakout sessions and to see a documentary on bullying. Junior Achievement is bringing in local business leaders to discuss ethics with the freshmen and BVHS teacher Nick Massmann will share with them his story about being a student in a school where a student shooting took place and how it impacted his life. They will also watch the bullying documentary and have a variety of other sessions. A huge thank you to new school counselor Katie Hartz for her efforts coordinating these two days and to her colleagues Sonja Merrigan and Michelle Stemwedel for their assistance. 3 Page 3 PROM! Carolyn Ebright, Advisor Carolyn.Ebright@k12.sd.us The El Riad Shrine Mosque will once again be the site for the BVHS prom. This year s prom will be held on Saturday, April 18th. The theme for the evening event will be "Classique Magnifique." The ballroom will be decked out in classic décor rev o l v i n g around the colors of black, gold and cream. They will first be transported back to the 1920 s Great Gatsby events with a feathers, beads, and fedoras photo op stop. Even further back in time, the classic Venetian Masquerade décor encourages students to wear a mask amidst glittery gossamer in a second photo op stop. Students are expected to pick up his or her prom ticket April 2nd-April 10th in the High School office. Students are allowed to bring guests from other schools provided that they are a junior or a senior at that school. We will use the week of prom to contact schools to confirm guests student status. Students may bring guests that have graduated from high school provided that they have not yet reached the age of 20. If a guest has dropped out of school they will not be allowed to attend our prom. Students may not bring guests who have had a drug or alcohol violation in the last year. All guests will be required to bring photo identification and documentation that demonstrates their current age. The behavior of all guests is the responsibility of the student that brings them to the dance. Any inappropriate behavior will result in removal and the consequences will transfer to their sponsoring student. BVHS students will be required to present their student identification cards to collect their tickets and will not need their identification cards the night of the dance. The dance is free to all juniors and seniors that worked at one of the concession stands during their junior or senior years. The out-ofschool guest is also free if a student had worked at a c o n c e s s i o n stand. Students that have not worked a concession stand will be charged $25. This amount will cover them individually and will also cover their guest. At the dance, hors d'oeuvures will be served to the students courtesy of the Advanced Foods class from Brandon Valley High School. One bottle of water per student is available for free to each prom attendee and the Mosque will also have pop available for purchase. The dance is over at midnight. The doors will open at 8:00 pm. Parents and guests are welcome to the Mosque to take pictures, but will be asked to leave by 9:00 pm before the dance begins. Doors will be locked at 9:30 pm. After that time, students will not be allowed entrance. Parents of students that have tickets for prom that do not show will be called just to notify the parents of their absence. Parents of students that wish to leave prom prior to 11:00 will also be called to notify them of their child s early departure. AFTER PROM BREAKFAST The junior/senior parents are also hosting an After-Prom Breakfast event. After prom is done at midnight, students are encouraged to meet at the Brandon Fire Station for a pancake feed. Students will be placed in a drawing for various door prizes if they attend the breakfast. Only Brandon Valley juniors and seniors can receive the prizes.
