1 SIGMA CHI Alumni Newsletter SHELDON DETRICK, PUBLISHER MACKENZIE MEDDERS, EDITOR New Sigma Chi Alcohol Policy No Alcohol of any kind can be on or in any Sigma Chi Facility during the time a Pledge Program is taking place. This means starting NOW until after Initiation at your Chapter (Probably Late September or Early October) there can be No Alcohol on Sigma Chi Property or in A Sigma Chi House. THIS INCLUDES DURING HOME FOOTBALL GAMES. The Undergraduates want you to come by the house before or after all football games Look at the house, meet the Brothers, get reacquainted with old friends but until after initiation do not bring any alcohol to the house (in your hand or in a cooler). New Policy States: The Only Alcohol allowed any time in a Sigma Chi house is Beer and Wine - NEVER ANY STRONG LIQUOR!!!

2 SIGMA CHI Alumni Significance Outstanding August Alumni Connection Luncheons! This month we had the privilege of having two Alumni Connection speakers, Tom Bloomfield and Ben Kimbro. Tom Bloomfield gave us an update on the current state of the automobile industry and what we should expect to see over the next couple of years. We learned about the progress companies are making on driverless cars and even new technologies you wouldn t imagine. Thanks to Tom, we are excited to see what will happen next in the automobile industry. The second speaker we had in August was Ben Kimbro. Ben gave us an update on the Tulsa Club Building that is currently in progress. This building will have over 90 rooms, including our very own Sigma Chi meeting room, and there will be a suite dedicated to Donald E. Walker. Also, Kimbro had some amazing insight into Oklahoma s current marijuana laws and some of the problems store owners are experiencing. For example, if it is currently illegal to grow and traffic marijuana, where are store owners going to get products to sell? 3 SIGMA CHI Alumni Alumni CONNECTION John Price GAMMA DELTA 91 Gamma Delta Sig John Price has joined the staff of the Sigma Chi Foundation as its inaugural Director of Legacy Giving. John supports the Foundation s fundraising efforts, by engaging alumni, connecting them to the program of the Fraternity and Foundation, and securing planned gifts, which may include bequests, gifts of appreciated property, life insurance arrangements, or donations by means of a trust. He is directly responsible for planning and implementing the Foundation s estate planning program and works in tandem with other Gift Officers to secure gifts benefitting Sigma Chi. John graduated from OSU in 1991 with a degree in History, received his J.D. from the College of Law, and is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association. Prior to joining the Foundation, he served as Associate General Counsel for the OSU Board of Regents. Although back and forth to Evanston and traveling across the country supporting Sigma Chi, John continues to live in Stillwater with Suzee, his wife of 24 years, and their four children. Both of his sons are Gamma Delta Sigs. Quentin, his oldest, is a recent graduate in Chemical Engineering and MacGregor is currently studying finance. His daughter Payton will be entering her sophomore year at OSU and daughter Ellery will be a junior at Stillwater High School. 4 SIGMA CHI Alumni Letter From The President ANDREW GRIMM OU 02 Dear Brothers, Fall is just around the corner and Football Season is officially here!! This past month Brother Sheldon Detrick put on 2 more fantastic Alumni Connections that packed the place. He has numerous guests planned over the next couple of months so be on the lookout for the reminders. Our weekly lunches are held on the 31st floor at the Summit Club in downtown Tulsa and our attendance has been outstanding with numerous new faces weekly. Our monthly happy hour will be on Thursday, September 13 at Bricktown Brewery located at 33rd & Peoria. You do not need to be a member of the Summit to attend the weekly lunch meetings and our happy hour features a discounted food and beverage menu. Last but certainly not least we will announcing the details on our Annual Christmas Party in the next couple of weeks. This is always a can t miss world class event put on by Brother Rick Guild. 5 SIGMA CHI Alumni Bob Wandres Letter BOB WANDRES, TU 66 Brothers, Okay, this is just speculation, so don't take it too seriously. Recently, I was having coffee with a senior fund raiser of the Sigma Chi Foundation, and the subject turned to changes within the Fraternity. Like everything in this day and age, Sigma Chi is facing (and reacting) to rapid changes in our campus cultures. We talked about new rules regarding hazing, alcohol, recruitment, and pledge periods being reduced to 5 weeks, including the pluses and minuses. Social probations are often handed down for the smallest infractions. Of course, we also discussed the new pressures to admit females, which seems to be trending in certain areas of the country in both Fraternities and Sororities...unfortunately not a joke. God only knows what the future holds. But, one thing is certain. Sigma Chi is the largest and fastest growing Greek organization in the world. It dwarfs all others in charitable giving, and enjoys the strongest alumni support by far. And here is what two old men sittin' around talkin' can do. We wondered about the day when Sigma Chi may no longer need or wish to be controlled by quirky universities, move off campus, and simply continue its growth by additionally offering many worthy young men membership outside of academia, with the promise of an enriched life as gentlemen. It has outgrown being restricted to only students in our exclusive schools. There are brotherhoods that have operated this way since the country was founded, like the Masons and Shriners. I know it may never happen...but, it could. At least, it is worthy of thought. Sigma Chi is now a powerful force that will likely determine its own future. In hoc Signo Vinces. 7 SIGMA CHI Alumni Grand Praetor Report DON MCKINNEY, TU 84 Brothers, I am very happy to announce our chapters in Oklahoma had a very successful Balfour Leadership Training Workshop. Gamma Delta and Delta Omega both received a Peterson Award. All the chapters had great participation and are bringing back useful tools to further the chapters. Keep in mind that all chapters will be having initiation in late September. I would like all of us to be involved in September for Sigma Chi day of caring. This is a great way for us as Sigma Chi's to give back to our communities. Ken Klein organizes a nice group in Tulsa. Find a way to make a difference and be proud of our efforts as a fraternity to impact others lives. We lead by example and show our communities how we care. The topic I want to mention is fall formal rush. OU and TU both saw a significant drop in young men signing up for formal rush. Why is this? OU has two years in decline. I was told 1000 signed up two years ago. Last year 800, this year 600. This was communicated by the Consul. TU normally has 120 go through rush, this year 75 went through. Is this a trend? I am not sure. I am asking questions of other regions as to their input. I will say that the Greek system has been under attack and this might be a result of those efforts. This could be a trend of this generation. I know we need to spread the word of how greek life influenced us and how it has helped each one of us.
