Sales and Use Tax Seminar Oct 2 (T) 8:30 11:30 a.m., $10 This course covers the basics of Nebraska sales and use tax. Sales tax affects everyone! If you are a business owner, or are considering starting your own business, this information is a must for you and your bookkeeper. The topics discussed will not only benefit professionals, the general public can also learn how sales tax affect them every day. The presentation covers all areas of sales and use tax, including licensing requirements, exemptions, reporting, and taxable services. Agri-Business Seminar Oct 2 (T) 1:00 4:00 p.m., $10 This class will cover, in detail, the sales tax exemption for commercial agricultural producers on the purchase and repair of equipment. Discussion will include qualifying agricultural operations, equipment and parts, and how to obtain a refund for tax paid on parts for depreciable agricultural equipment purchased prior to October 1, Exemptions for feed, seed, and chemicals will be explained. 4 agricultural operations. Instructors will teach participants how to complete tax returns for a variety of scenarios, as well as related exemption and refund forms. This session will benefit farmers, implement dealers, equipment suppliers, and parts store owners, as well as those who operate machine shops and other types of repair facilities. It is also relevant to feed and seed suppliers. Bringing Baby Home Sep 20 (TH), 6:00 8:00 p.m. $15 per person or $25 per couple The Bringing Baby Home workshop is based on research showing that nearly two-thirds of couples report a decrease in relationship satisfaction upon the addition of children. Designed for parents to take anytime from pregnancy through the toddler years, this workshop teaches the skills the other third of couples use to keep their love alive during this often difficult transition. This session is appropriate for first-time parents and parents of many! As a certified Gottman educator, Mark Anderson is authorized to present this program on behalf of John Gottman, Ph.D., the creator of the program. Though it doesn't take a workshop to figure out that kids change a couples relationship, this class will help you learn what is normal and what is not. You will also learn to recognize the common indicators of baby blues and dangerous postpartum depression, and their effects on the couple's relationship and parenting. Finally, you will learn tips from the experts on how to adjust to the four most common (and potentially dangerous) changes brought about when baby comes home. These workshops are presented by licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Mark Anderson. Classes are either 12 or 16 hours and there will be an hour break at noon each day for lunch on your own. To find out more about the WNCC GOLD CLUB, visit wncc. edu/bce or call Senior Connections Oct Dec 2018 (TH) $13 per class Celebrating 175 th Anniversary of the Oregon Trail Oct 4, 9:00 11:00 a.m. Instructor: Barb Netherland This class will present several aspects of the Oregon Trail, including the importance of landmarks in the Nebraska Panhandle using quotes from emigrant journals. The class will highlight some of the oddities that perplexed and delighted emigrants as they traveled. Photography from the Paul and Helen Henderson collection (used with permission by Legacy of the Plains Museum) will be shared with the audience and, in some cases, contrasted with current photographs of the sites. This class acknowledges the 175 th anniversary of the Oregon Trail and the 50 th anniversary of the National Trails Act. Computer Basics Oct 11, 8:30 10:30 a.m. Instructor: Bill Loring, WNCC faculty Do you have trouble getting your computer to do what you want it to do? Learn the basics of Windows 10, and about security in the Facebook age. Bring your laptop, if you have one. The instructors will be Bill Loring, a full-time WNCC information technology instructor, and some of his students. Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851 and Fort Mitchell History Oct 18, 9:00 11:00 a.m. Instructor: Jerry Lucas This presentation will address the people that took part in the treaty of Fort Laramie, including those from the government and tribal leaders. We will also discuss the origin of Fort Mitchell and its short life, while looking briefly at the daily life of the soldiers and the two military actions involving its troops during its existence. 6 An Introduction to Medicare Oct 25, 9:00 11:00 a.m. Instructor: Caryn Long You don t have to navigate Medicare alone. If you are approaching age 65, or over 65 and thinking about retirement, you are invited to attend this course to answer questions like: When should I enroll? What does Medicare cost? How do I make sure I have the right coverage? Caryn Long, panhandle regional representative for the Nebraska Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), will be presenting and be available for questions. History of Scottsbluff Valley Nov 1, 9:00 11:00 a.m. Instructor: Barb Netherland So often the founding of frontier towns brings a mix of competition, disagreements, ingenuity, and a cast of interesting characters. The histories of Gering, Scottsbluff, and Terrytown are rich with examples of great cooperation, and equally great rivalries, with a cast of interesting personalities. This class will explore the beginnings of these sister cities. Smart Phone Basics Nov 8, 8:30 10:30 a.m. Instructor: Bill Loring, WNCC faculty Do you have trouble getting your new smart device to do what you want it to do? Bill Loring, a full-time information technology instructor at WNCC, and his students will help you get started! History of the Rebecca Winters and Mary Murdock Graves Nov 15, 9:00 11:00 a.m. Instructor: Jerry Lucas This presentation recounts the journey of Rebecca Winters from New York to Ohio to Illinois. It includes the story of the Mormons and the effect her death had on a community. We will also follow the travels of Mary Murdock, a 73-year-old woman from Scotland, to the United States and westward to Salt Lake City.

7 The Story of Wounded Knee 1890 Nov 29, 9:00 11:00 a.m. Instructor: Barb Netherland There are times in American history when tragedy occurs: when the voices of good people on both sides of an issue are not heard; when bad choices are made by the powerful, the arrogant, or the uninformed and are covered up by the cautious, the expedient, and the opportunists. Wounded Knee was such a tragedy. Learn what led up to, and what followed, this disastrous event. Alpacas: The History and Harvesting the Luxurious Fiber Dec 6, 9:00 11:00 a.m. Instructor: Barb Netherland Domesticated by the Incas more than 6,000 years ago and revered for their luxurious fiber, alpacas have experienced boom and bust cycles since the 1870s, including a little known, very lucrative business in 1890s America. This class will teach the history of alpacas, describe ways of processing their fiber, and demonstrate different techniques of spinning the fiber into yarn. Body in Balance for Seniors Dec 13, 9:00 11:00 a.m. Instructors: Terri Allen and Teresa Thomas Many people from age 60 will start noticing a difference in balance and begin to lose strength in their legs. Exercise helps seniors who have problems with arthritis and helps prevent them from falling. This class will offer education on how to keep your balance and strength as you age. The Pony Express and the Battle of Mud Springs Dec 20, 9:00 11:00 a.m. Instructor: Jerry Lucas This is the tale of the advent, execution, and demise of an American enterprise experiment. This program looks at the history of the social, political, and financial impact of the Pony Express on the history of America. We will also look at the isolated event, which helped fuel the fires of the 1860s Indian Wars on the northern plains. We will also discuss how the actions taken and not taken changed two cultures history and views as a result of the Battle of Mud Springs. MEET THE INSTRUCTORS Barb Netherland is a lifelong resident of Scotts Bluff County. She was the director of North Platte Valley Museum for eight years and continues to volunteer for Legacy of the Plains Museum. She has served on the Scotts Bluff County Tourism board, Platte Valley Attractions committee, the Oregon-California Trails Association national board and the Nebraska Chapter of the Oregon-California Trails Association. Bill Loring has been a full-time information technology instructor at WNCC for eight years. His 20 years of experience as an IT consultant allow him to bring real-world experience into the classroom. Caryn Long is the regional representative for the Nebraska Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) in the Western Service Region. Caryn maintains an office locally in Scottsbluff and travels throughout the panhandle. The mission of the program is to offer free, unbiased information for Nebraskans on Medicare and other health insurance. Because Medicare and other types of insurance can be confusing, Caryn and her SHIIP volunteers in the panhandle are available to meet with consumers for personalized counselling, outreach events, media awareness, public presentations, and enrollment events. Jerry Lucas has been a student of Native American and western expansion history from a very young age. He began working at the Scotts Bluff National Monument in 2006 as an interpretive park ranger. In this capacity he has conducted research and prepared presentations for park visitors on a variety of topics including the Pony Express, Rebecca Winters, the Mormon Trail, as well as battles and forts in the Scottsbluff Valley area. Jerry describes himself as a historic storyteller as his presentations are historical facts presented in a colorful and entertaining manner. Terri Allen is a certified wellness coordinator/health coach and has provided service for the last 10 years for Scottsbluff Public Schools, Western Nebraska Community College, and Scotts Bluff County. She has also provided one-on-one nutrition and health coaching for the Every Women Matters program for the state of Nebraska. Terri believes that physical activity is an important part of health and aging. She has recently been certified in a fall prevention program for seniors and has taught this throughout the county for the last three years. Teresa Thomas, RN, BSN, is the injury prevention coordinator, community health nurse, and Scotts Bluff County health nurse. She is certified in the fall prevention courses "Stepping On," and the Tai Chi course "8 Moves for Better Balance." She is also a certified instructor for the Stop the Bleed campaign. 7

Come and experience the joy and confidence of painting a beautiful landscape using the Ross wet-on-wet technique. Students must bring a roll of paper towels to this class. 9 Summer Camps Exploring Science Camps Jun 2 Jul 28 (SA) 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. $30 per class Ages: 6 th grade 10 th grade All About Fossils July 14 Explore plant and animal fossils that are millions of years old! Discover what fossils are, how they are formed, and why they are important to understanding the earth. Learn where fossils are found and how to collect them. Students will take home several specimens to start their own collection. Exploring Owl Pellets July 28 Dissect owl pellets to find out what they are, why owls can t digest bones or fur, and what they do about that. Students can keep the bones they find. Oftentimes, complete skulls are found! Theatre Opportunity for Youth (TOFY) Jul (M F) 9:30 a.m. 2:00 p.m., $125 Ages: 8 15 Matinee Performances: Jul 28 & 29 Harms Center & Scottsbluff High School Theatre West s TOFY (Theatre Opportunity for Youth) Camp 2018 has selected Disney s Annie Kids for its third summer musical. Disney s Annie Kids is part of Music Theatre International s series of abridged, 40-minute musical productions for kids. During the two-week camp, children will participate in all aspects of producing a show, culminating in two matinee performances. ICE Enrichment Academy offers numerous learning opportunities that are fun, challenging, and engaging. If you would like to learn more about solving crime, this is the course for you! Students meet crime-fighting professionals and learn their secrets. Students learn the art of fingerprinting, hair analysis, and other trace evidence left at the scene of the crime. Gooey, Gross, and Green In this course, students create things that ooze, bounce, and squish! Students take part in a number of hands-on gooey, gross, and green fun science and art projects. Jammin in the Jungle Students explore the mysteries of exotic plants and animals through beautiful books and interesting activities. Students learning is enhanced with several science skills including probability, biodiversity, and horticulture. Come and join the fun of this jungle adventure! Dream Builders Are you a master Lego builder? Would you like to be? This course encourages students to explore their creativity and skills. Students enhance their imagination and skills as they unleash their inner Lego builder! All building levels welcomed! Exploring K NEX Week Jul 30 Aug 2 (M TH) 1:00 4:00 p.m. $30/day or $100/week Ages: 9 14 Are you familiar with Punkin Chunkin? Build some simple machines using K NEX building system pieces to understand the physics involved in various classes of levers. Then create your own Chunkin machine to launch projectiles, much smaller than pumpkins, in competition. We also explore with the K NEX building system to create bridges, structures, and simple machines.
