Come be entertained by the unique performances and demonstrations put on by our students, including this year's Great Catapult Competition. Even if you don't enter a project or the variety show, plan on being part of this event! All types of projects are welcome and should reflect the students learning from this year. Remember that projects can be: Social studies/multicultural projects Science exhibits and demonstrations Arts and crafts, collections, and other creative projects Entry forms for projects and the Great Catapult Competition will be available at your sites and are due to your CHEP teacher by Friday, May 4. If you choose to have your project judged, it must be accompanied by a written report, preferably typed. A rubric for the displays and reports is attached to the cover page available at your site. We will also be having the annual Variety Show including selections from CHEP musical productions to showcase our talented students. See the article on page 4 for audition information. Our catapult competition will be a thrilling experience. See the article on page 4 for all the information you need on how to get your catapult ready to launch. Projects need to be delivered to OCDE, Building D on Thursday, May 27, between 9:00 a.m. and noon if you wish them to be judged or between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. for non-judged projects. Remember, if you wish to have your project judged it must be delivered by 12 noon. Come hungry as CHEP North s PTO will be selling pizza and salad and CHEP West is selling chili dogs. CHEP Central is in charge of dessert and will be sponsoring a bake sale. The student leadership and CHEP Central parents will be selling candy. Cookies and lemonade will also be available at no charge! If you have any questions, please contact your CHEP teacher.

2 A Note from the Principal: from the Desk of Pat Novak As we come into spring we enter into the season of State mandated testing. The first test on the horizon is the 7 th grade (only) STAR Writing test. Parents of all 7 th graders should have received a letter the first week in February with information on the time the test will take place at your site, and all 7 th graders in the entire State are given the test on Tuesday, March 2. The score of this test will be reflected on the multiple choice STAR test that is taken by all 2 nd through 8 th graders the last week of April or the first week of May (depending on the site). A letter with all the information on that testing will come to you in March. Additionally, the CA Physical Fitness Test is given to all 5 th and 7 th graders in March and April. The test is also given to 9 th graders, and those who do not pass are required to take Physical Education all four years of high school, instead of two. Because we believe being physically fit is so important for our students, and in order to prepare them for the 9 th grade test, we offer the testing for students in all grades as well as their parents and our staff. Last year we had no takers in that adult category. We are still in the process of contracting four schools with tracks near our four sites, and the dates, times, and places will be widely shared when that information is firm. The six areas of fitness and descriptions of how the test is conducted will be mailed to all 5 th and 7 th graders and is also posted on our website. The areas tested are: Aerobic Capacity (one-mile walk/run), Body Composition (body mass index), Abdominal Strength and Endurance, Trunk Extensor Strength and Flexibility, Upper Body Strength and Endurance, and Flexibility. Reasons to participate in testing? I believe the STAR testing provides excellent feedback to all of us on our students proficiency at each grade level, and guides decision making for the upcoming school year. Research supports the more a student takes standardized tests, the better he/she becomes at test taking a life skill. All of us are aware of the importance of a healthy life style, and the Physical Fitness Test encourages our children in that direction. The participation in the State mandated tests is one of the factors in our API score, and affects our Exemplary Independent School status. All to say, it s good for students and it s good for CHEP! 3 8 th Grade Graduation 8 th Grade Graduation (cont d) 8th grade graduates and families Letters from the Graduation Committee are being mailed in February to all 8th Grade Graduates. Be sure to mark your calendars now for this special celebration! Interviews/Auditions Thursday, April 8 beginning at 10:00 a.m., by appointment only OCDE Main Office- 200 Kalmus Dr., Costa Mesa D1009 On Thursday, April 8, we will be holding interviews/auditions at the OCDE main office for students who are interested in speaking or performing at graduation. Auditions will be held, by appointment, beginning at 10:00 a.m., in Room D1009. The CHEP eighth grade graduation program is a big undertaking that requires a substantial commitment from all students selected to participate in the program. The graduation program is similar to a theatrical production, and selected students must work as a team to pull the production together. Eighth grade students are selected to M.C. the program, be keynote speakers at the program, and highlight some of the talents of the graduating class of The interview and audition process assists the graduation committee in selecting students to represent the graduating class. Many factors are involved in designing the graduation program. Representation from the four CHEP sites, the inclusion of a variety of talent, and students level of commitment are a few factors considered in the selection process. The graduation committee reserves the right to edit, shorten, or alter selected student speeches and performances to ensure appropriateness and balance of the entire graduation program. The OCDE main office is located at 200 Kalmus Drive, Costa Mesa. To schedule an interview/audition appointment, or if you need additional information, please contact Dianna Chen at the CHEP-North office, (714) Photographs are due Friday, April 2 at your CHEP site Please bring 2-3 photos of your graduating student for a graduation video presentation. Some ideas for photos include baby/toddler moments, home school projects/memories, sports and hobby activities, or field trips. We hope to receive 2-3 pictures per graduate: one baby/toddler, one current, and one family picture. If you prefer to send in your pictures on disk, please make sure the files are in.jpg format with a minimum 200pixel/inch resolution. We will make every effort possible to return all pictures to you. However, please be cautious about sending your only copy of a prized photo. In order to recognize all of the eighth graders in the video presentation, please send these photos in soon! Label the photos with the student s name and CHEP teacher s name. The photos will be returned to you on graduation day. 4 Variety Show Auditions EXPO Catapult Contest Grades K-8 CHEP Central s Large Classroom Tuesday, April 20 Beginning at 12:30 p.m. Please call the CHEP-Central paraeducators to sign up for a time slot at (714) All of our talented CHEP students will have the opportunity to showcase their abilities at EXPO! If you have a talent that you would like to share, we would love to have you participate in the Annual CHEP Variety Show at EXPO on Thursday, May 27, between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. All participants must audition in order to be part of the show. The show s categories are: dance, comedy, poetry, instrumental, singing, or other. Please note that no lip-synching will be allowed. If you are interested in being a part of the show, be sure to sign up for an audition time. Also, see flyers at your CHEP site for more information. THE CATAPULT IS BACK!! EXPO CATAPULT CONTEST Thursday, May 27 Calling all future engineers, scientists, and builders our EXPO contest this year features the return of the catapult. (Trebuchets are okay, too.) We will be testing student catapult projects outdoors to find the long-distance winner (lower grade and upper grade.) Catapults may be made of any material or combination of materials, but should not cost over $15 to build. They may not be motorized. They must fit in your car! Parents may help with projects, especially if tools are used, but all designs should be student generated. Entry forms will be available at the sites closer to EXPO. From the Tessman Planetarium website: Join us on the campus of Santa Ana College for interactive astronomy shows and discover the wonders of the universe. All our shows contain information about the latest discoveries in astronomy and science. Our new LCD projectors allow us to display new images from spacecrafts and the Hubble telescope in our shows as quickly as they are released to the public. Dr. Eastmond, our Planetarium Director, presents an engaging introduction of physical concepts used in astronomy. Take a tour of our Solar System and learn to appreciate how rare the conditions are on our planet. Whale Watching continued understanding of dolphins, whales, seals, and sea lions. The children will also take part in a plankton dredge as a part of our whale watch experience! This is a pre-paid, non-refundable field trip. 11 Fossil Field Trip Science Classes Grades 1-8 Thursday, March 25th 12:45 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. R.B. Clark Regional Park & Interpretive Center 8800 Rosecrans Avenue Buena Park, CA Price: $4.00 per person $3.00 parking fee per vehicle This program includes a presentation at the Interpretive Center on the ancient fossil history of the area, followed by a walking trip to the marine fossil site north of the park. The program is given by the park paleontologist/ranger. At the fossil site, the group will search for REAL fossils. "Dig" tools are not necessary; paintbrushes are optional. Preparation Class for Fossil Field Trip CHEP North Tuesday, March 16 Grades 1-3: 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Grades 4-8: 2:15 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. This preparation class will investigate what fossils are, the stories they tell about the past, and the habits of the organisms that made the fossils. We will meet at 1:00 p.m. in the CHEP South small classroom on these Tuesdays: March 9 and May 11. Plan a 2-3 minute presentation about a book you have enjoyed or a topic you ve learned about. Bring the book and/or other visuals with you to share during your presentation. Or, come and play your musical selection for us to enjoy! Students develop their reading skills while learning some of the basics to dramatic presentation. We will begin with scripts suitable for children age 6 and up, and then, over the course of the semester, move onto a variety of others. The class size is limited to 25 students. American Girls Club Grades 3 5 Fridays: February 12 and March 12 10:30 a.m. 11:45 a.m. Teacher: Alyne Cronin Please sign up for each class. Hear Ye! American Girls Club will be discussing Books Five and Six of Kaya, from the Native American Girls Club continued American Girls series. This series involves the early settlement of America. If you wish to dress as a Native American Indian girl for the classes please do so, or if you have a Kaya doll and would like to share her in class, please bring her along! It would be helpful, but not necessary, if you read either Book Five or Six of the Kaya series before the next class. March 12 will be our final class in which we will be celebrating the many adventures of Kaya with a party.
