1 The C hronicle A Weekly Look at the Cottey College Campus volume XXVIII, number 19, January 24, 2014 The Fantasticks Friday, January 31 8:00 p.m. Center for the Arts, Auditorium The Fantasticks is the world s longest-running stage production of any kind, and with good reason: it is a timeless fable of love that manages to be nostalgic and universal at the same time. It is a moving tale of young lovers who become disillusioned, only to discover a more mature, meaningful love. This production will be performed as a Steampunk version. Steampunk is a genre which came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s and incorporates elements of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, horror, and speculative fiction. This production is being presented by the Nebraska Theatre Caravan. Welcome New Staff! Cottey is excited to welcome two new staff members to our Athletic Staff! MaKayla Grahn will serve as our new assistant basketball coach and athletic recruitment coordinator for our two new programs. Grahn had a very successful collegiate basketball career, playing at Howard Junior College, Cisco Junior College, and Rockhurst University. She earned an A.A. in education from Cisco Junior College, and her B.A. in history with a minor in theology from Rockhurst University. MaKayla hails from Lovelady, Texas, where she played for her most demanding coach, her father, who is a very successful high school basketball coach! Samantha Robertson will serve as our assistant softball coach. Robertson has previously served as our very dedicated volunteer softball coach since Sami Jo earned her A.A. and A.S. at Coffeyville Community College, where she played collegiate softball under then assistant coach Shelli Stanley. Sami Jo is completing her BSED in secondary history education at Pittsburg State University. Sami Jo hails from Lamar, Missouri, where she has been involved in softball as both a player, youth umpire, and coach. Both ladies began work on Friday, January 10. Please make them feel welcome!

3 MLK Day of Service Observance of Martin Luther King Day of Service was held on January 18, 2014, from 1-5 p.m. This year, Cottey student volunteers participated in spring cleaning for the Vernon County Senior Center. The volunteers started off scrubbing and wiping down chairs and tables which were then placed in a storage room. They proceeded to dust off beams, scrub the walls, clean the windows, and sweep the floor. It took a little over three hours to get all the work done, and the overall experience was a success. Angie Daniels, director of the senior center, expressed her gratitude for the work the volunteers had put in, and the volunteers were glad to be able to help make a change. There were a total of 13 volunteers including 11 students and the two staff sponsors. Student volunteers included: Melissa Norton Asheley Sanders Deja Mason Alina Ghulam Rasool Chaymaa Bakhalek Tara Holland Fortunate Zondo Elizabeth Harding Paige Ruiz Belinda Kemetse Everce Nyamahunge Leader-in-Residence Dot Maver will serve as the Center for Women s Leadership Leader-in- Residence February 11-12, Dot is an agent for peace around the world and currently serves as the president of the National Peace Academy. In her work as a community organizer and peacebuilder, Dot s keynote is inspiring cooperation on behalf of the common good. Utilizing a shared responsibility and shared leadership model (SR/SL) developed over thirty years, she brings together individuals and groups around a common purpose while creating a work environment that demonstrates right relationship in a culture of peace. While on campus, Dot will meet with classes and small groups of students. If you are interested in having Dot speak to your class, or know of a student who may be interested in meeting with her, please contact Denise Hedges at extension 2204 or CWL@cottey.edu. She has had a number of research opportunities at OSU and is currently working on an Undergraduate Research, Innovation, Scholarship and Creativity (URISC) supported project on applying MATLAB to create algorithms for making the best biosensors. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 27, at 11 a.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church. Visitation is scheduled Sunday, January 26, from 4-5 p.m. at Ferry Funeral Home. We extend our deepest sympathy to Linda s husband Bill, and to her family. Exercise Reward Program Entries for the Exercise Reward Program are due in the Wellness Envelope on Karen Polon s bulletin board by 5 p.m., Friday, January 31.
