2 Fulton Exhibit Maggie Bridger 08 The P.E.O. Foundation Art Gallery at Cottey will host Hunger Pangs by Brianne Fulton, assistant professor of art, from January 14 to February 3. The artist s work focuses on the desires of women through the template of the traditional, ceramic collectible. Due to adult subject matter and iconography, viewer discretion is advised. The Gallery is inside the Haidee and Allen Wild Center for the Arts on the northeast corner of Austin and Tower streets in Nevada, Missouri. The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and later on the evenings of performances. JIN IN TO SPEAK ON ON JAN. 22 Jin In takes the stage in the Missouri Recital Hall at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, as part of the Distinguished Speaker Series sponsored by Cottey College s Institute for Women s Leadership and Social Responsibility. Jin In is the founder and president of 4Girls GLocal Leadership (4GGL), a multigenerational and multiinternational network of women specialists and undergraduate students from the US to cause bold social change in the ways the world s poorest girls are valued, educated, and developed as leaders. Jin In, born into a wealthy family in Seoul, South Korea, became destitute when her father passed away because Korean laws at that time did not recognize wives as blood relatives. Her mother left the family to immigrate to the US, learn English, find a job, and dream of reuniting the family. They were able to reunite five years later in Texas. Alumna Maggie Bridger will be on campus January A dance artist, writer, health activist and teaching artist, Maggie Bridger keeps busy with several different projects. She teaches dance in the Chicago Public School system through her work with Changing Worlds and works as a Program Facilitator with the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Photo from Maggie s Blog Indiana. Her choreographic work was seen most recently at Access Living, a leading disability rights organization in Chicago, as a part of their annual physically integrated dance performance. You can find Bridger's writing on her blog, Chrohn s Chronicles, which she uses to share her own experience as a woman living with chronic illness and to reach out to others in the Crohn's community. Bridger earned her AA from Cottey College in 2008 and her BA in dance with concentrations in dancemaking and dance studies from Columbia College Chicago in Maggie will be giving presentations at Cottey on The Disabled Body in Performance on January 17 and 18, and then setting a dance piece on the Cottey-in-Motion Dance Company over the weekend. There is still room for more participants in two of Maggie s presentations on Thursday, January 17. These presentations will be in the Missouri Recital Hall from 1:15 p.m.-2:15 p.m. and 4 p.m.-5 p.m. The presentations on Friday (9 a.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m.) are in smaller rooms; if you would like to attend/bring your class, please contact Jo Byrnes we could find a larger space to accommodate more attendees. If you would like more information about Maggie s presentations, contact Jo Byrnes. Jin In realized in medical school that medicine in most countries has forgotten women who are often treated as second-class citizens. Her life s mission soon became one of empowering girls and women globally with local action. From this came the formation of 4GGL. The Recital Hall is inside the Haidee and Allen Wild Center for the Arts on the northeast corner of Austin and Tower streets in Nevada, Missouri. The speaker series is free. A reception follows after the address in the Weber Foyer of the Center for the Arts. SAVE THE DATES Distinguished Speakers Series February 26, 2013 Dr. Lorry M. Fenner, Col. (USAF, Ret.) Women Leaders in the Three Branches of the U.S. Government April 9, 2013 Andrea Kramer Women s Leadership in Law and Global Renewable Energy Each presentation will begin at 7 p.m. in the Missouri Recital Hall. Though the vast majority of workers in the nonprofit sector (73%) are women, men still hold a majority of top leadership positions and receive significantly higher incomes. Women of color account for less than 17% of female news staff, and only 6% of newsroom staff overall. Cited From: The White House Project Report: Benchmarking Women s Leadership, taken directly from the National Council for Research on Women website (ncrw.org). Recycle Dead Batteries Did you know that you can recycle dead batteries (just not locally)? They should not be put in the garbage due to the toxic components in them. Cottey recycled TWENTY POUNDS of batteries from students and a few others over the winter break. If you have dead batteries to recycle, you can give them to a student to put in the hall recycling cans in their hall or take them to Helen Lodge. Helen s next recycling trip will be in March.

YMCA Cottey students enrolled in Principles of Marketing, a baccalaureate level course in the International Business program participated in a public relations campaign for the Nevada Osage Prairie YMCA during the fall semester. The purpose of the public service project was to achieve more recognition of the Y s new branding campaign and related programs. At the beginning of the semester, students enrolled in Principles of Marketing volunteered to help the YMCA, students toured the Osage Prarie YMCA and were introduced to many of the programs the Y has to offer by Jeffrey Snyder, executive director of the Osage Prarie YMCA. Marketing students learned about specific YMCA programs such as Kids Kove, the after school day-care program, swimming lessons, racquetball and volleyball leagues, the new branding campaign, volunteering, and adult based clubs. Marketing students then prepared publicity materials for internal use at the Y and also for distribution to the local radio station, KNEM-KNMO and the local newspaper, Nevada Daily Mail during late fall and winter.
