1 Bridgewater Current Volume 38, Number 7 September 2016 Labor Day Celebration Street Improvement Projects Underway The Town s annual Labor Day Celebration is set for September 5 with a full day of events including: 5K Run/Walk at 8:00 a.m. Register online at: bridgewater.town Oakwood Drive Project Carnival rides from 3-9:00 p.m. Food and drinks sold by local charities and service organizations. Standing Room Only from 5:30-8:30 p.m., concluding with Fireworks at 8:30 p.m. Park & ride shuttle will run from TA starting at 4:30 p.m. Work has started on the long awaited improvements to Oakwood Drive. Fielder s Choice Enterprises of Charlottesville was awarded the contract for this project and has been on site since early August. So far most of their work has involved excavation, but soon drainage structures will be installed to be followed by sidewalk. The last step in the process will be the paving of the street, which should occur between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Their estimated completion date is December 31st, but FCE hopes to wrap things up by Thanksgiving if the weather cooperates. Mountain View Drive Project Unlike Oakwood Drive, the sidewalk improvements to Mountain View Drive are more of a home-made project. Some of the drainage pipe installation was conducted by Rhodes Excavating, but so far all of the concrete sidewalk and block wall has been installed by our employees. We d hoped to finish this work by early fall, but we had to divert the crew dedicated to Mountain View Drive to the miniature golf course that opened recently. Since that s behind us, we can return to this project with the hope that the sidewalk will be completed prior to winter. Once the work is completed on the west side of the street we re going to observe the drainage patterns to see what is needed to accommodate the east side of the street. That is not expected to be a STREETS, page 2

Registration will be held at Generations Park during our Farmers Market on Thursday, October 6 (3-7pm) and Saturday October 8 (8-Noon). For more information, please contact Terri McIntyre at or 555tmc@gmail.com STREETS, from page 1 time consuming process and we expect the evaluation and construction to take a limited amount of time. Once drainage issues on both sides have been addressed, we ll bring in a paving contractor to pave the street. Hopefully all work, including sidewalk, drainage and paving, can be finished by late spring of Last Chance: License Plate Contest Our contest to find a design for our new Town license plate ends September 15! 3 Town of Bridgewater Tournament of Champions Registration form for tournament entry is due on October 3rd. Registration forms can be mailed or delivered to: Bridgewater Community Center, 201 Green Street Post Office Box 72 Bridgewater, Virginia Tournament check-in will be October 13th from 3:00 pm to 7:30 pm at Arey Hall. All participants must check-in prior to their first event. Celebration of Champions at Arey Hall: Saturday October 15th at 5:00 pm The celebration will include the unveiling of the Bridgewater License Plate. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place will be recognized in all categories. All winners will be featured in the 2017 Activities Calendar. 1st place photography in all categories will be displayed in the council room. Tournament of Champions trophies will be displayed at Generations Park. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Mini-Golf Tournament at Bridgewater Mini-Golf Course: Participants can enter in either the Adult or Young Athlete (12 and under) category. Games will be scheduled after 5:00 pm on October 13th and 14th. The conclusion of the tournament will be scheduled beginning at 1:00 pm on October 15th. Participants will complete the course three times. The winner will be determined by combining the scores. The lowest score in each category will win. Doubles Tournament at Doug Will Tennis Center: Single Elimination Bracket Participants can enter in either the Womens, Mens, or Mixed Doubles category with a partner. Matches will be scheduled after 5:00 pm on October 13th and 14th. The conclusion of the tournament will be scheduled beginning at 9am on October 15th. Rules: A doubles team will win when they have won a minimum of 6 games, with at least a 2 game advantage over their competitor. The games are scored starting at "love" (or zero) and go up to 40, but that's actually just four points. From love, the first point is 15, then 30, then 40, then game point, which wins the game. Cornhole Tournament at Generations Park: Single Elimination Bracket Participants can enter in either the Adult or Young Athlete (12 and under) category with a partner. Games will be scheduled after 5:00 pm on October 13th and 14th. The conclusion of the tournament will be scheduled beginning at 1:00 pm on October 15th. Rules: Cornhole boards will be set up with 27 feet between the front edge of each board. Your feet may not go past the front edge of the board. A tossed bag may not touch the ground. If it hits the ground and bounces up on the board, remove it before any other bags are thrown. If it s hanging off the board and touching the ground, remove that as well. When all 8 bags have been tossed to the other side, add up the score. If you earn the most points in that single round, your team will throw first in the next round. After all bags have been thrown, a bag remaining on the board is worth 1 point. A bag that went in the hole is worth 3 points. Add up how many points you earned and compare them to your opponents. Equal points cancel each other out so that only one team can score per round. A game is won when a team reaches 21 points with a lead of 2 or more points.

7 Page 7 Bridgewater Current Y: Jay s Column About Policy Riverwalk After presenting our Riverwalk concept to the Town Council on August 9, we have received dozens of excited comments. The excitement energizes us, which is a good thing because there is still much work to do. In broad terms, the Riverwalk proposal is simply to build a path near North River. This path would serve both aesthetic and practical purposes. Walking along the river can be a peaceful and immersive experience. But in Bridgewater, walking along the river could also take us from Point A to Point B quickly and efficiently. The path would also accommodate bicyclists, and possibly golf carts. The Riverwalk might eventually run all the way from Sandy Bottom to Wildwood, but the first phase would be centered on Main Street. Or more accurately, it would be centered under Main Street. The Riverwalk would be placed beneath the north end of the Route 42 bridge. Placing the path under the bridge will require VDOT approval, and the local residency seems supportive. We hope to have a final decision soon. This first phase of the Riverwalk would start on East Riverside Drive, at Edgebriar Park. The path, which we hope to construct with permeable pavers, would then go under the bridge to Seven Bridges Park. From there, we would lay the path along West Riverside Drive to its terminus. At that point, we would prefer to run the Riverwalk over private property, through Bridgeview Park, and on to West Bank Street. (Bridgeview is the park with the fitness trail.) Now, if you were paying close attention, two words in the previous paragraph might have increased your blood pressure a little: private property. While the particular property in question would be very useful to us, I m certain that the Council has no interest in condemning it. We will use private property for the Riverwalk if and only if we can work out a deal which is fair to the taxpayers and to the landowner. (This policy, by the way, would surely apply to future phases as well.) We are having some informal discussions with the landowner already. Like most of what we do, the Riverwalk will come with a price tag. We are working hard to determine what that price will be. We are also looking at funding opportunities, including grants from various agencies. Such grants often come with hidden price tags, however, so we haven t ruled out funding it ourselves. We will keep you posted on all of this. We appreciate your kind words and will do all we can to put together a proposal the Council can accept.
