1 MINUTES FOR WORTH COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION BOARD MEETING HELD THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2013 AT WORTH COUNTY BOARD ROOM AT 7:00 P.M. The Worth County Board of Education met Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Worth County Board Room. Chairman Jenkins called the meeting to order. Stacey Rutledge, Principal, WCPS, gave the invocation. Chairman Jenkins led the pledge to the flag and welcomed visitors. All Board Members were present. Also in attendance were Barbara Thomas, Ed. D, Superintendent of Schools, and Mr. Clarence Miller, Board Attorney. ADOPTION OF AGENDA Randy Bacon made the motion to approve the agenda for February 14, Jerry Jones seconded the motion and the vote passed unanimously. SUPERINTENDENT S REPORT Recognitions Dr. Thomas recognized the Spelling Bee winners. First place winner was Zion Akporido, second place winner was Talin Mason and third place winner was Ethan Swilley. Zion received a check for $50.00 and will compete in the District Spelling Bee. Dr. Thomas recognized and presented certificates to Madison Burger, the DAR Essay winner for the elementary grade level and to Bristal Thompson, the DAR Essay winner for the high school grade level. Dr. Thomas recognized the Worth County School District counselors. These counselors provide a service to our teachers and students and are often overlooked for the hard work and the many hours they do. Those in attendance recognized were Cindy Bryan, WCES, Monabeth Parkman, WCMS, Elizabeth Brand,, Saudia Malachi,, and Michael Kovach,. Also recognized, but unable to attend, were Laura Bartley, WCPS, Deirdre Smith, WCPS and WCES, and Greta Webb, WCMS. Reports Dr. Thomas reported the Sylvester Police Department has requested the use of the Holley Elementary School building to conduct a mock active shooting class on March 12, 2013 and March 13, Through this training, officers will be able to identify a true active shooter, WCBE February 14, 2013 Page 1

2 examine the history of active shooter incidents and discuss the possible responses to various active shooter situations. Also invited to attend are the Worth County Sheriff s Office, the Poulan Police Department, and the Warwick Police Department. William Oliver made the motion to approve as presented. Randy Bacon seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. AWARD BIDS Opened the Wireless Network and Network Electronics Bids. These are a part of e-rate. The bids were given to the Technology Director to review for specs and also to check on work done in the past by the bid applicant. A motion was made by Jerry Jones to table bids until a Called Meeting on February 25, Randy Bacon seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. BOARD ITEMS Motion was made by Randy Bacon to appoint William Oliver as the delegate and Jerry Jones as the alternate delegate to attend the GSBA Delegate Assembly in Savannah on June 14, Melvin Jefferson seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Melvin Jefferson abstained. The motion passed with a 4-1 vote. INFORMATION A Called Meeting will be held February 25, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. concerning the Wireless Network and Network Electronics Bids.
