1 «Back Print Employee Newsletter September 11, 2006 Hispanic Heritage Month details In the coming month, KCC will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a number events. Celebrations worldwide begin Sept. 15 and end Oct. 15. Here are the local (KCC) and international dates of interest related to Hispanic Heritage Month. Sept From noon to 1 p.m. in the College Center, eight professionals will present dances from Veracruz, Jalisco and Zacatecas. Also beginning at noon, the first 100 people in attendance will receive free tacos and punch. Sept Independence Day in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Sept Mexican Independence Day from Spain. Sept KCC adjunct professor Sonia Baspiñeiro-Edwards will be the speaker during the Kankakee Community Heritage Luncheon at the Civic Auditorium. Her topic will be Education is the True Key to Success. Sept From noon to 1 p.m. in the College Center, KCC employee JoLynne Keiser and her dance partner, José Fuentes, will give a dance demonstration featuring the Cumbia, Bachata, and the Merenge. Also beginning at noon, the first 100 people in attendance will receive a free lunch of Latin American food. Sept At 11 a.m. in Room L253, Nicky Yates will give a presentation contrasting Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day from Spain.. Oct El Di'a de la Raza (Columbus Day). The KCC events are being planned by a sub-committee of the Affirmative Action and Cultural Diversity Committee Elise Schultz, JoLynne Keiser, Michael Townsend, Ellen Liehr, Carol Webber and Sonia Baspiñeiro-Edwards, who serves as chairperson. Local taste event is Thursday There's less than one week to warm up your taste buds for Taste of KCC. The event will be from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14 in the Cavalier Room. All KCC students, staff and faculty are invited. This will be a fun mid-day event for sharing dishes and friendship, said event planning committee chairperson Wendy Goeckner. Even if you cannot share a dish, please come to enjoy a delicious meal. Some selections which will be available include chicken curry, French chocolate cake, hot water cornbread, deviled eggs, an Indian chick pea dish, fried rice, dumplings, peach cobbler, and almond Roca. Chicken, lasagna and beverages will be provided as well. Participants are asked to bring items to the Cavalier Room anytime after 11:30 a.m. Sept. 14 so the food can be placed on the tables and identified by type, contributor and ethnic background.

2 Serving begins at noon. If you would like to bring a dish to share either a family favorite or cultural recipe contact Wendy at wgoeckner@kcc.edu or phone ext to let her know what you will be bringing. This event is sponsored by KCC's Cultural Diversity Committee. Accounts payable check run There will not be an accounts payable check run the week of Sept. 28. Voucher requests need to be received by Bonnie Simpson in the Business Office on Monday Sept. 18 if a check is needed on the Sept. 21 check run. Voucher requests received in the Business Office Sept. 19 through Oct. 2 will be paid on Oct. 5. The Accounting Office asks you to plan accordingly to ensure checks are available when you need them. Friday is staff training in Student Services The Student Services office will have limited staff available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15 due to a staff training session. Advisement, registration and financial aid services will be available, but on a limited basis that day. Faculty members and others having contact with students are asked to pass this information along to students so they may plan accordingly. Full service will resume on Monday, Sept. 18. New worker in Corporate Education Gary Wright has joined the staff as part-time coordinator of business development in the office of Corporate and Continuing Education. Gary will work with area business and industry to develop employee training programs utilizing KCC's educational resources. Gary served for the past two years as general manager of radio station WKIF in Kankakee. He also was general manager of WKAN/WLRT/WYKT radio stations in Kankakee for 17 years. He holds a bachelor's degree in English from Troy University in Troy, Ala. and a master's degree in business administration from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais. Gary also has taken a number of KCC computer courses as well as MIG welding. He can be reached at ext and his office is in Room D116. Crosswalk announcement requested Faculty are asked to remind students about driving safely in the parking lots and near crosswalks. There have been a number of reported incidents where students were nearly hit while walking in a crosswalk. Printing request deadline for Oct. 8 event To accommodate marketing needs related to the Oct. 8 anniversary birthday bash, please submit requests for printing and graphic services related to that event by Sept. 13. This includes handouts, signs and any other information which will be needed on or before the Oct. 8 event. This deadline should give enough time for the marketing and planning office to complete the requests from various departments. Please submit requests to Kari Sargeant or Ellen Skelly. 3 The Business Division is sponsoring a series of panel discussions as part of the college's 40th anniversary celebration. The monthly mini-forums will bring community and business leaders onto campus to share their opinions, viewpoints and outlooks, said Paul Carlson, chair of the Business Division. The first mini-forum will be Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 11:45 a.m. in the Workforce Development Center Conference Hall, Room D140. Panelists will be Steve Baker from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Pete Schiel from the city of Kankakee, and Jeffrey Bathe and Nancy Schunke from KCC. The panelists will discuss current business practices and their ideas for the future in their career areas. Students, faculty, staff and the community are invited to attend. The culminating event for the series will be the annual Business Society Forum in the spring. Blood drive is Wednesday The American Red Cross will be taking blood donations from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13 in the Cavalier Room at Kankakee Community College. Blood supplies in the area are dangerously low, so the Red Cross encourages eligible participants to make a donation. In most cases, the entire donation process takes about one hour. Participants also will have the opportunity to win an ipod for their donation. Participants must have last donated on or before July 19 to be eligible, along with other requirements. The blood drive is sponsored by KCC's Student Advisory Council. For more information or to set up an appointment, phone ext Walk-in appointments also are available. Poetry 'slam' will share patriotic sentiments A poetry event celebrating the soul of patriotism will be at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 14 in the auditorium. The Purple Heart Poetry Slam will celebrate and reflect on the importance of veterans and their impact on America. It will be hosted by jazz flutist Galen Razzaq with accompanying piano, bass and drums. Selected poetry and other material will be read with accompanying music, said Kelly Lewis, coordinator of Student Activities and College Events at KCC. The musicians play along with the readings, enhancing the words with dynamic effect. Veterans and other volunteers also will be welcome to read their own writings about their experiences or thoughts on patriotism. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Razzaq has performed both internationally and domestically for more than 30 years. The Purple Heart Poetry Slam is sponsored by KCC's Student Activities office. Celebrate constitution with events next Monday On Monday, Sept.18, KCC will hold a free public celebration of the 219th anniversary of the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. The federal government has asked educational institutions to commemorate this moment in U.S. history. As an academic leader in this area, KCC is proud to host this event for our students, staff and community members, said Cheryl Overton, an adjunct professor who teaches American government courses. It's extremely important to remember what we as a country have accomplished. At 1 p.m. in the College Center, there will be a public reading of the preamble of the Constitution, singing of the National Anthem, and comments from college administration, local dignitaries and veterans.

4 At 7 p.m. in the auditorium, Professor Allen Shoenberger of Loyola University will speak about the Constitution. Shoenberger will speak on The Constitution: Living in Troubled Times. Shoenberger, a professor at Loyola University Chicago School of Law, also has been a hearing officer for the Illinois Pollution Control Board and a consultant for the Administrative Conference of the United States on disability law. One of his fields of interest is the rights of the disabled with particular attention to educational rights. Constitution Challenge After Shoenberger's presentation, the winners of the Constitution Challenge will be announced. Winners must be present. The Constitution Challenge is a 25 question quiz about the United States Constitution. Information about the challenge has been provided to area high schools and also is available at the Information Desk at KCC. Entries will be divided into two categories, high school students and KCC students. Winners will be selected randomly from all those who answer every question correctly. The top prize in the KCC category will be a $200 travel voucher. For the high school category, prizes will include sweat shirts, mugs, and assorted other prizes. Faculty members named to Who s Who Congratulations to the KCC faculty members who have been named to various Who's Who publications. Kris Condon s biography will be included in the 2006 edition of Who s Who Among American Teachers. It is the third time she has been part of Who s Who, with other years being 2002 and Kris is a professor for the Business Division and Corporate and Continuing Education, including serving as coordinator for the Paralegal/Legal Assistant Studies program. Kari Livesey s biography will be included in Who's Who Among America's Teachers, It is the second consecutive year that she has been included. Kari is a professor for the Business Division, including serving as coordinator of the Child Development program. To be in Who s Who Among American Teachers, college professors must be nominated by students included in The National Dean s List, the college-level anthology from the publishers of Who s Who Among American High School Students. Sonia Baspiniero Edwards will be included in the Empire Who s Who of Women in Education, and also will be included in the Honors Edition of the registry. Sonia is an adjunct professor teaching Spanish courses. Get ready, Hoopla time almost here It's almost October, so the holiday shopping season is closing in. The traditional kickoff at least at KCC to the holiday season is the Homespun Holiday Hoopla. The Hoopla is an extravaganza showcasing homemade items from KCC employees and their close relatives. The 18th annual Hoopla will be from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16 in the Board Room and adjacent President's Conference Room. Condolences Condolences to Mary Jo Martyn and her family after the recent death of her father, Gerald D. Brennan Sr. Mr. Brennan passed away on Friday, Sept. 1. Funeral services were held in Palos Heights last week. Memorials, which will be donated to Misericordia/Heart of Mercy Center. are being collected by

5 Margaret Cooper in Administrative Hall. Mary Jo is assistant director of Workforce Services. Baby is born Congratulations to Kim Mau and her husband, Dan, on the birth of their fifth child. Kate Elizabeth Mau was born Aug. 26 at 5:17 p.m. At birth, she weighed 6 pounds, 7 ounces and was 20 inches long. Her older siblings are Allison, Anna, Christopher and Jakob.
