1 Employee Newsletter October 13, 2008 Volunteers needed for Bradley-Bourbonnais Chamber of Commerce Expo The Bradley-Bourbonnais Chamber of Commerce Regional Expo will be on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Northfield Square Mall. The departments of marketing and recruitment services are looking for faculty, administrators and support staff to represent KCC at the college booth. Volunteers will talk to prospective students and community members as well as distribute KCC literature and giveaways. The following shifts are available: 10 a.m. - noon Noon - 2 p.m. 2-4 p.m. 4-6 p.m. (includes pack up) If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Michelle Driscoll mdriscoll@kcc.edu or phone at ext United Way campaign kicks off Thursday The United Way internal campaign at KCC will begin officially Thursday, Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Cavalier Room. The mission of United Way of Kankakee County is to improve, consistently and measurably, the quality of life for all the people of Kankakee County by raising and distributing funds, mobilizing community resources and encouraging innovative solutions to the community's health and human service needs. Those who make a donation at the kickoff will have the chance to win any of a number of prizes. Participants will have their names entered one time for every $26 donated. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. Of every $1 donated, 99 cents benefits the needs of local Kankakee County residents. 2 The financial affairs department is offering a Datatel budget training session for budget managers and staff that assist budget managers. Topics will include Datatel account balance inquiries, account activity listings, and budget reports. Anyone with questions is invited to contact Amy at ext Share poetry skills - applications now available Oct. 24 is denim day for Breast Cancer awareness Charity concert features 'Everyday People' Condolences Financial aid seminar info The Financial Aid Office has announced the dates for upcoming information and workshop sessions. Anyone who would like to order fliers for their work area can contact the financial aid office with the number requested. The free Information Nights provide an overview of the financial aid process for students and parents. The free workshops provide step-by-step assistance necessary to correctly fill out the FAFSA. The information nights and workshops will be held on campus. Financial Aid Information Nights will be offered three times, from 7 to 8 p.m. on each of these nights: Monday, Nov. 3; Tuesday, Nov. 18; and Monday, Jan. 26. Financial Aid Workshops also will be offered three times: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 23; Tuesday, March 3; and Monday, April 20. Copyright resource information is available Did you know is copyrighted? Do you know if it is legal for a church to copy sheet music for a choir? Is it legal to copy VHS tapes to DVD? Each question above falls under U.S. copyright laws. It is up to KCC employees to become familiar with copyright laws, including those which pertain to electronic publications and s. At the request of faculty member Joey Ahuja, a series of basic reminders about copyright are being published. Those with questions on copyright are invited to contact Donna Smith at ext or Karen Becker at ext Author with Kankakee roots plans visit to KCC The KCC Learning Resource Center will welcome mystery writer Sharon Fiffer to campus on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Iroquois Room. Fiffer, originally from Kankakee, is the author of a series of novels starring an antique dealer who has a knack for finding dead bodies. Fortunately, Fiffer's lead character, Jane Wheel, also has a knack for eventually solving the crimes, in novels including "Killer Stuff," "Hollywood Stuff," "Buried Stuff," "The Wrong Stuff," and the new novel, "Scary Stuff." References to the Kankakee area and its landmarks are frequently peppered throughout Fiffer's books. During her visit, Fiffer will talk about her books and writing career. It is sponsored by the Kankakee Area Library Association. The event is free and open to the public. Mid-point of weigh in contest is almost here A nutritionist is available, and so are free health screenings for all employees Submitted by Michelle Driscoll, contest coordinator Contestants, it is getting close to time for the midpoint weigh-in! Are you reaching your goals? Do you need help staying on track to reach your goals? I have good news, a certified nutritionist, Amy Hertz M.S., R.D., L.D.N., has agreed to assist our contestants and help us stay fit and on track toward overall wellness. Amy also teaches the Nutrition class for KCC. She has agreed to look over any contestants' eating habits and to provide guidance toward a better plan. To receive Amy's help, record your meals and snacks and fitness routines for a full week. It also is beneficial to include pertinent family history information. Then, be prepared to sit down with Amy on Oct. 21 or Oct. 23 to review your plan. To take advantage of this great opportunity, me at mdriscoll@kcc.edu with questions or to reserve a session with Amy. At the meeting, Amy will help you adjust your plan and will provide

All employees invited to health screenings Oct. 23 Screenings for cholesterol, blood glucose, and colorectal cancer will be offered on Thursday, Oct. 23 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. in Room M139. Please note that these wellness screenings are available to all interested staff members, not just contest participants. Please remember that you must fast eight to 10 hours before the cholesterol screening. The non-invasive home test kit for colorectal cancer screening includes detection of occult (hidden) blood in the stool which can be caused by pre-cancerous polyps or cancer. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States. Although it has a 90 percent cure rate when detected early, more than 56,000 people die from colorectal cancer each year. The screening kit includes instructions for collection and diet guidelines. Those on a special diet or who use medications should consult their physician before stopping medications or changing their diet. The screenings are free thanks to the Wellness Committee and the efforts of Cathi Hughes, adjunct professor for the Medical Laboratory Technology program. Recycling event is coming A recycling event sponsored by two campus organizations will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21 in the Cavalier Room. Phi Theta Kappa students are encouraging staff and students to bring in recyclables such as plastics (#1, #3, and #5 only), newspapers, office paper and magazines. Glass will not be accepted at this recycling collection. At the same time, the KCC Rotaract Club is collecting used eyeglasses to donate to VOSH--Volunteers in Optometric Service to Humanity. VOSH provides vision care worldwide where it is not obtainable or affordable. Everyone is encouraged to bring in old eyeglasses to be donated to a worthwhile cause. Celebrate National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Month on 10/22 DUI simulator: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.; Free root beer floats: 11 a.m. - 1p.m.

5 The Student Activities Council will host a DUI simulator on campus from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 22 on the main walkway. The PEERS AWARE III Simulation System is based on the patent pending DS Portable Road Simulator, which emulates road driving conditions. It facilitates training and assessment of drivers in the actual vehicle and is designed to realistically show the dangers of drinking and driving. There also will be a presentation of an impact video, which shows the aftereffects of accidents caused by alcohol, from the time injured students enter the emergency room until years pass by. The Student Advisory Council also will also offer free root beer floats on the main walkway from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Delicious Fannie May candy fundraiser has begun The annual KCC Phi Theta Kappa fundraiser selling Fannie May candy has begun. Orders for Fannie May candy will be taken until Friday, Nov. 14. "Everyone who puts in an order can have this delicious candy in time for the upcoming holidays," said Susan LaMore, a Phi Theta Kappa adviser. The KCC women's volleyball team would like to thank everyone's donation to this cause for Breast Cancer research. Please look for us to make this an annual event. Share poetry skills - applications now available Those who enjoy writing poetry are invited to submit entries for the KCC Invited Guest Poetry Reading. Chosen poets will read their poems in an open setting from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at KCC. Entries will be accepted from

6 all community residents. More than one submission will be accepted from each poet, but each entry must include a separate submission form. Entries will be accepted by , mail and hand delivery. Submission deadline is Oct. 20, and selected poets will be contacted the week of Nov. 3. Oct. 24 is denim day for Breast Cancer awareness There will be a denim day on Friday, Oct. 24. All money will go directly to the American Cancer Society for research, education, advocacy and service. To participate, please make a minimum $5 donation to Kathy Weber in Admissions & Registration by Oct. 24. Those who donate will receive a pink ribbon. Charity concert features 'Everyday People' The popular rhythm and blues group, "Everyday People" is performing on Thursday, Oct. 23 at the Paramount Theatre. The concert begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. All proceeds benefit the Kankakee County Animal Foundation. Condolences Condolences to Jim Wanner and his family on the death of Jim's father, Edward Wanner. Mr. Wanner died Sunday, Oct. 5 following a long illness. Visitation and funeral services will be held in Eddyville, Ky. on Oct. 10. Jim is a professor in the Math, Science and Engineering Division.
