Two men s semifinal contests are set to take place as Northeastern State will battle Midwestern State at 6 p.m. while Tarleton State will square off with West Texas A&M at 8:30 p.m. The action will continue through HOOPS - Continued to Page 6 It s a great time to be a Bruin Superintendent s Chalkboard Bevy of Bruin activities as spring approaches Though the 2010 Lone Star Conference Men s and Women s Basketball Championships are due to conclude this weekend, there is still plenty of action ahead. Two men s semifinal games are scheduled for this evening at the Bartlesville High School Fieldhouse, beginning at 6 p.m. The Dr. Gary W. Quinn women s semifinals as well as the men s and women s championships games are all scheduled to play out on Saturday and Sunday. I encourage everyone to head out to the BHS Fieldhouse and enjoy the action. Tickets are available on site. 2 Academic Achievement Awards pay off at Wayside, Hoover Staff members at Wayside and Hoover elementary schools were very happy to see their special guests this afternoon. Paying a visit were Bartlesville Board of Education president Marta Manning; Dr. Gary W. Quinn, the superintendent of the Bartlesville Public School District; and Dianne Martinez, the BPSD s executive director of elementary education. The trio were on hand to distribute bonus checks after the schools were honored with coveted Academic Achievement Awards for their fine showings in the 2009 Academic Performance Index, a testing series coordinated by the Oklahoma State Department of Education. Wayside received a perfect score of 1,500. Hoover, which had a perfect tally in 2008, chalked up a fine 1,498. The API was initially implemented by the OSDE in 2002 and considered a telling statistic in regard to the academic integrity of school districts and the sites which comprise them. At the elementary level, the API places a heavy emphasis on students state test scores in reading and math. The bonuses were called for according to Oklahoma House Bill 1593, which was authored by Tad BHS to play host to district band contest next week The 2010 District Band Contest is scheduled to be held next week on the Bartlesville High School campus. The contest will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day and will feature Class 2A though 6A middle school bands and 2A through 4A high school bands from throughout the region. The seventh and eighth grade bands from Central and Madison middle schools are expected to perform throughout the day on Tuesday. Schools are divided into five groups based on their enrollment numbers and are ranked in two categories according to their respective API scores best overall score and most improved score. The sizes of the groups are as follows: Group 1 (school enrollment up to 135 students), Group 2 ( ), Group 3 ( ), Group 4 ( ) and Group 5 (506 or more). The top four finishing schools in both categories among each group will receive monetary awards. Qualified personnel from firstplace finishing schools will receive $3,000, while second place is good for $2,000, third for $1,000 and fourth for $500. Wayside was first in its group and its qualified staff members received $3,000 bonus checks. Hoover s qualified employees received $500 bonus checks. throughout both days at no charge. Last weekend, the BHS and Bartlesville Mid- High School bands took part in the 2010 Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association District Solo and Ensemble Contest at Skiatook. Between the two schools, students earned more than 160 medals. Soloists from BHS and the Mid-High who earned superior ratings were Chris Hogan (two solos), Andrew Williams (two solos), Dalton Reynolds, Jonathon Harrison, Shelby Swanson, Amanda Thomas, Carl Szmutko and Brandon Wong.

3 Third Annual Prom Dress Fest set for Sunday at Youth Canteen The Third Annual Prom Dress Fest will be held this weekend at the Bartlesville Youth Canteen. The event is set to take place on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. The Bartlesville Youth Canteen is located at 3401 SE Price Rd. The goal of the Prom Dress Fest is to provide an opportunity for area girls to find affordable prom dresses. Most of the dresses available at the event are priced at less than $65. The Bargain Box, which is located at 822 S. Johnstone Ave., is currently accepting consignments of clean, gently used and current prom dresses from sizes zero through 18. Those who would like to learn more about the Third Annual Prom Dress Fest can contact Stephanie at the Bargain Box via phone ( ) Choir Aid Concert slated for Saturday Bartlesville High School s 2010 Choir Aid Concert is scheduled to take place Saturday evening. The event is set to get started at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center auditorium on the BHS campus. Tickets are $5 for adults while children ages six and under will be admitted free of charge. All proceeds raised from the concert will be used to help defray costs from the upcoming BHS musical of Once Upon a Mattress. Seventh grade student Kayna Williams earned a Top Ten Award during the 2010 Central Middle School Science Fair last weekend. The 57th Annual Bartlesville District Science and Engineering Fair is set to take place this weekend. Bartlesville District Science Fair set to get started today The 57th Annual Bartlesville District Science and Engineering Fair is scheduled to be held this weekend at the Bartlesville Technology Center. The elementary division (for grades one through six) competition will be held this evening beginning at 5:30 p.m. while the junior and senior divisions (grades seven through 12) will take place on Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. Each day of the event will feature awards ceremonies and pizza for the students and judges. There will be scheduled times for judging and public viewing as well. The junior and senior division competition on Saturday will offer an afternoon engineering contest. Students from throughout the area take part in the Bartlesville District Science Fair. The 2010 Central Middle School Science Fair took place last weekend, and some of the school s students were expected to take part in the district science fair this weekend. Earning Top Ten Awards in the 2010 Central Science Fair, which was coordinated by Central seventh grade science teacher Kacey Kesselhuth, were Katy Bridges, Abby Satterfield, Danielle Shigley, Luke Shigley, Maddy Bostic, Virginia Drummond, Gabby Storey, Krishan Baniqued, Andrew Lehman, Ashlee Fox, Breann Carpenter, Catherine Hine, Morgan Gerth and Kayna Williams. People s Choice Awards, as voted on by students and spectators, were given out to Tori Bade, Raven Budden, Rosston Kennedy and Tyler Peters during the Central Science Fair, which was the first one held at the school in years. All told, the contest featured projects by an estimated 100 seventh graders and could become an annual event.

LFYSP fashion show set for March 27 Fundraising event promises entertainment and fun for all Perhaps it was divine intervention. While sitting in church recently, Karen Lowe had an idea. She and her husband, Bartlesville Board of Education member Barry W. Lowe, are the co-founders of the Lowe Family Young Scholars Program. Launched in February of 2007, the focus of the mentoring-based program is to help students who might not otherwise have the means to attend college through scholarships. Since the program always welcomes the opportunity to raise funds for its students in fun and unique ways, she wondered what it would be like to hold a fashion show focused on the LFYSP. It could be a social event complete with light food and beverages and the students could model the latest fashions provided by some local merchants. Barry W. Lowe liked the idea, and thus work began in earnest to put together the event. The kids are all excited about the opportunity to do something like this, says Karen Lowe. Any young student is always interested in being a model. We have some great sponsors, and I think it will be a fun event. The 2010 Lowe Family Young Scholars Program Afternoon Tea, Fashion Show and Silent Auction is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 27 in the Oklahoma Wesleyan University Dining Center. Featuring apparel and accessories provided by Goody s Family Clothing, Stage Department Store, The Buckle and the Wal-Mart SuperCenter, the event is set to begin at 3 p.m. Tickets which are priced at $25 apiece of which $10 can be considered a tax deductible donation are available at the Bartlesville Community Center Box Office (300 SE Adams Blvd.) or by calling During the show, entertainment will be provided by the Ad Lib Singers as well as pianist Charles Miller. All proceeds raised from the event will benefit the Lowe Family Young Scholars Program. Mike Wilt, of the Jane Phillips Medical Center, will serve as the master of ceremonies. The LFYSP features 16 students in all and each of them will help out in some way during the fashion show. Some will walk down the catwalk modeling their attire as Miller provides the music. A semi-formal event, the show will feature an English-style tea setting. OWU chef Jerry Comstock will cater the event and the edible items are expected to include fruit-filled tarts, chocolate mousse tarts, petite muffins with honey butter, petite sandwiches (ham, turkey, swiss and provolone), petite lemon bars and veggie canapés. Other beverages, such as lemonade and coffee, will be available as well. The silent auction will feature items and services provided by businesses and individuals such as a Tissot titanium men s watch, a Ping Golf bag, designer Nicole Miller sunglasses, various pieces of artwork, car care FASHION - Continued to Page 8

5 Elks Students of the Month: March Bartlesville High School seniors Devan Rotary Students of the Month: March Zorn and Kendra Barron have been named the Elks Students of the Month for March. Devan is the son of Evan and Kristine Zorn. He is a member of the BHS student council as well as the BHS Orchestra program. He is a member of the Disciples Christian Church and its youth group as well. Devan plans to attend Oklahoma State University and major in political science. He loves to play basketball and read, and he has been employed at Subway for the last two years. Kendra is the Devan Zorn daughter of Lena Barron. She is currently a varsity cheerleader for BHS and has served as a cheerleader since the eighth grade. For the last two years, Kendra has participated in the Skills USA program for the Tri County Technology Center, and she is the class president of her cosmetology class. Kendra enjoys spending time with her friends and her foster family. She works at Jared s Frozen Custard. Elks Students of the Month all of whom are seniors are chosen by a committee of Bartlesville High Kendra Barron School teachers. They must be of high moral character, have initiative, show leadership capabilities, be good students, and be active and interested in their school and community. One boy and one girl are selected each month from October through May. Bartlesville High School juniors Thomas Bridges and Emily Mueller have been named the Rotary Students of the Month for March. Thomas is the son of Jon and Misty Bridges. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the BHS Student Council, the BHS Spanish Club and the Disciples Christian Church. Thomas is a member of the Lowe Family Young Scholars Program as well. Thomas has served as a page for Sen. John Ford and Rep. Earl Sears in Oklahoma City. A member of the honor roll throughout his scholastic career, he enjoys playing sports and listening to music. Emily is the daughter of Kevan and Jody Mueller. She is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the BHS Student Council. Thomas Bridges Emily Mueller District Word of the Month Trust Emily is active with K-Life Ministries and Bible study. She is a member of the BHS varsity volleyball program and played Bruin basketball as a freshman. Emily plays the cello for the BHS orchestra and is accomplished on piano as well. She is active with the First Wesleyan Church and has gone on mission trips to England and the Virgin Islands. The Rotary students of the month both seniors and juniors are eligible are chosen by a committee of BHS teachers. The students should be of high moral character, have initiative, show leadership capabilities, be good students, and be active and interested in their school and community. One boy and one girl are selected each month from September through May. On a monthly basis, the Bartlesville Public School District designates a word (or words) which students and staff members are encouraged to incorporate into their respective lifestyles as a habit. The word of the month for March is trust, which means confidence in the integrity, ability, character and truth of a person or thing. The BPSD releases a new habit word monthly from August through May.

6 HOOPS - Continued from Page 1 Sunday as the eventual men s and women s conference champions will earn automatic berths into upcoming the 2010 NCAA Division II national tournaments. The Lone Star Basketball Championships are back in Bartlesville for the third consecutive year and will return in 2011 as well. This year s action - all of which has been played out at the BHS Fieldhouse - commenced on Wednesday. Once the tournament is completed, there will have been 16 teams competing in 14 games. Tickets to the games - there are six remaining including tonight s pair - are available at the BHS Fieldhouse. While bringing a high grade of hoops action to Bartlesville, the Lone Star Conference athletes and coaches have reached out to the community as well. In each of the three years that the tournament has been in town, the athletes and coaches have visited area schools and taken part in a bowling event with special needs students at the Red Apple Sports Center. On Thursday, representatives of nine different Lone Star Conference men s squads visited a like number of schools - including the Bartlesville Mid-High School, Central Middle School, Madison Middle School and Ranch Heights, Richard Kane and Woodrow Wilson elementary schools within the Bartlesville Public School District. This morning saw several of the women s teams bowling with special needs students and teachers at Red Apple. The two women s semifinal contests as well as the men s championship game are slated to take place on Saturday at the BHS Fieldhouse. The women s championship contest is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. Members of the Abilene Christian University women s basketball team bowl with an area student earlier today at the Red Apple Sports Center. 7 CHALKBOARD - Continued from Page 1 to spring, there is plenty going on within the Bartlesville Public School District these days. In addition to the Lone Star Basketball Championships, we recently crowned the district s 2010 Teacher of the Year while several students will earn honors this weekend in the 57th Annual Bartlesville District Science and Engineering Fair, which is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Bartlesville Technology Center. The annual Ticket to Tomorrow event which is coordinated by the University of Oklahoma s Sooner Flight Academy concluded earlier today at the First Church of the Nazarene s Family Life Center while still on the horizon is the BPSD s 20th Annual Classified Person of the Year Reception, which is set to take place on March 30 at the Bartlesville Community Center. Of course, spring break, which will span from March within the district, is coming up quickly as well. As we always like to say, it s a great time to be a Bruin. The Lone Star Basketball Championships are a wonderful event. Though this year s tournament will soon conclude, the event is due back in Bartlesville and at the BHS Fieldhouse again next year. The championships which see the eventual winners in the men s and women s brackets earn automatic berths in the NCAA Division II national tournament always allow for those in and around the City of Legends to enjoy some March madness. The games are spirited, the souvenirs, food and beverages are plentiful, and we always enjoy the opportunity to show off the tremendous BHS Fieldhouse. Many special events always coincide with the championships. Prior to the tip-off of the tournament, the Lone Star Conference held a special banquet here in Bartlesville. This afternoon beginning at 4:30 p.m. a free FanFest is set to take place in the old BHS gymnasium which will feature complimentary food and beverages in addition to a special appearance by Rumble, the mascot of the NBA s Oklahoma City Thunder. While the Lone Star Basketball Championships offer a way for the conference to salute some of its best teams, the BPSD honored some of its top educators recently. The district s 2010 Teacher of the Year Ceremony was held on Feb. 22 in the Fine Arts Center auditorium on the BHS campus. An annual event, the 2010 Teacher of the Year Ceremony featured special performances by the Bartlesville High School Jazz Choir, the BHS Chamber Orchestra, the Madison Middle School 7th and 8th Grade Girls Choir and the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School Choir. A language arts instructor at BHS, Keri Bostwick was unveiled as the district s new teacher of the year while Marsha Fouts, a counselor at the Bartlesville Mid-High School, was honored with the Kurt Schmoldt Teacher Appreciation Award. The event sponsor was 66 Federal Credit Union. The two-day 2010 Ticket to Tomorrow event launched on Thursday and concluded earlier today. During the event, area fifth graders are able to learn about the wonders of flight and space exploration and how a firm understanding of math and science can open doors into exciting and adventurous careers. Ticket to Tomorrow features several stations for the students to rotate through as they enjoy interesting and hands-on lessons. Some of the lessons allow the youngsters to work with inflatable versions of space shuttles and other simulated crafts. The annual Bartlesville District Science and Engineering Fair offers insight into some rewarding career possibilities as well. Students from throughout the area enter and display their projects which focus on a myriad of aspects from the world of science. Students from elementary grades all the way up to seniors in high school take part in the event and the projects are always insightful and sometimes truly fascinating. Today s fair which is for students from grades one through six will span from 5:30-9:30 p.m. The fair will conclude Saturday and will focus on students from grades seven through 12. It is due to stretch from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The district s annual Classified Person of the Year Reception is always a fun event and is held in the main ballroom of the Bartlesville Community Center. Whereas teachers and administrators are certified employees within the BPSD, classified members of the district comprise a multitude of support roles such as secretaries, bus drivers, cafeteria workers and custodians. At the event, nearly every classified person who attends will win a door prize. All of the food and giveaways at the reception are offered thanks to generous donations from area businesses, parent support groups and individuals. Last year s Classified Person of the Year was Margaret Puckett, an administrative assistant at the Mid- High. A new one will be crowned during this year s reception. As we wind our way toward spring, things are definitely heating up within the Bartlesville Public School District. It is indeed a great time to be a Bruin.

Those who would like to buy a VIP table at the event will have the opportunity, also. Near the conclusion of the show, there will be a special prize drawing. Everyone who purchases a ticket to the event will be automatically entered to win and the prize will be a gift card from Goody s, The Buckle or Wal-Mart I want to encourage people to come out for the show, because it s a great way to celebrate spring, see the season s fashions and enjoy a delightful dining experience, says Karen Lowe. Also, I want to encourage these young kids who are willing to get up in front of a group people and model these clothes did I mention the mentors and parents are models, too? We need to encourage everyone. The organizing committee for the 2010 Lowe Family Young Scholars Program Afternoon Tea, Fashion Show and Silent Auction consists of Deborah Langley, Ada Grillot, Laurie Collins, Linda Levy and Karen Lowe. Oklahoma Wesleyan University s Dr. Randy Thompson, Rogers State University s Connie Beair, Deborah Langley and Laurie Collins have helped to market the event. The student models for the event were due to wrap up their clothing fittings this week at Goody s, Stage, The Buckle and Wal-Mart. Each of the 16 students in the LFYSP will be allowed one free guest entry to the event. Everything has come together easily for this event, says Karen Lowe, because everyone understands what the Lowe Family Young Scholars Program is all about. It s about giving students the opportunity to make a better life for themselves and their families. The Leadership Bartlesville program allows its students to gain an in-depth knowledge of their community in areas such as community development, local government, community service, health, tourism, economic development and education. Number of dropouts within district continues to fall As a monthly feature within The Bruin, we are comparing the dropout statistics from the academic year to those of the current one. Specifically, we will be looking at the combined number of dropouts from Bartlesville High School and the Bartlesville Mid-High School. Between those schools, from Aug. to Feb. 28 of the academic year, there were 51 dropouts. During the same span this year, there were 37.
