1 President s Welcome From Kristi Fuller IASFAA President Welcome to the 2016 IASFAA Spring Conference! Our conference theme, Refresh, Reinvent, Relax (we ve got this) will address changes in financial aid that are underway. With new legislation and reauthorization on the horizon, we must refresh and update ourselves on new regulations. PPY and a new FAFSA filing date will force us to reinvent our office processes. And after the changes, we must remember to take some time off and relax! IASFAA is pleased to welcome special guests Megan McClean Coval from NASFAA, Zack Goodwin, FSA Trainer, and Thomas Ratliff, MASFAA President-Elect from Indiana Wesleyan University. These guests, along with some of our Iowa colleagues, bring a wealth of expertise as presenters for the conference! With a new financial aid professional training track along with sessions for seasoned professionals, I am positive that there are many great sessions for everyone! Thank you to all of our wonderful exhibitors that have chosen to attend and exhibit at the conference. Their unwavering support of our Association over the years is truly appreciated. Please make sure you take time to visit the exhibit area and thank each of them. The Program and Site Committees have once again done a wonderful job in planning a conference filled with many updates and timely sessions in a relaxing and fun atmosphere. Take the time to visit and network with your fellow colleagues! And don t forget to stay for the dinner Thursday evening to celebrate the many accomplishments of your IASFAA colleagues at our Red Carpet Awards Dinner! 5 IASFAA S Charity Efforts Spring 2016 IT S A CALL FOR QUARTERS & HOUSEWARES! The Program Committee has selected Youth Homes of Mid-America, formerly known as the YMCA Boys Home, as our conference charity. This non-profit organization has been committed to helping troubled young people and their families for over 70 years. By guiding them toward a path of independence, Youth Homes is helping to build a more positive environment for generations to come. Its clients are Iowa children referred to them by the Juvenile Court Services, the Department of Human Services and Integrated Health Homes, as well as a multitude of other social services providers in the area. These children have a wide range of emotional, behavioral and educational difficulties. Many of the adolescents in the program haven t yet acquired coping skills to become fully engaged young adults. Youth Homes offers nine different programs residential, transitional, independent living or counseling to children and their families, recognizing that many of the difficulties they are experiencing are tied to family dynamics and circumstances. There are currently 50 boys residing in their Ross Campus Residential Treatment program. The Johnston school system provides teachers and staff to educate the boys in-house. Once they ve acquired certain skills, the boys will attend Johnston High School. More information about Youth Homes of Mid-America can be found on their website We will be raising donations for Youth Homes of Mid-America in two ways. Change jar teams: we will be having a friendly team competition amongst the conference attendees. Team captains and teams will be announced at the conference; be sure to bring your quarters, loose change and dollar bills! Quarters will count as positive points for your team all other money (coins and bills) will count as negative points! Team members will want to add quarters to their container and put their other money in the other teams containers in an effort to get the most points (or least amount of negative points)! Winners will have bragging rights! The funds that IASFAA raises will help support their various programs. IASFAA members can also bring items the boys will need when they transition to their own apartment. Items such as blankets, sheets, dishes, and so forth would be very welcome. These items could be new or gently used. Load up that laundry basket, IASFAA! As you are putting together your list of items to bring to the conference, don t forget your quarters!
