Bertoglio, Mayor of Casper Keynote Address Taking the LEED: Moving Preservation Forward in Wyoming A small population and vast distances between urban areas present preservation issues specific to the West and Wyoming in particular. Big picture preservation issues, including reuse of historic buildings and rehabilitation tax credits, will be discussed with an eye toward making projects happen in Wyoming. Mr. Weiderspahn will also discuss his newest preservation adventure, the Grier Building in Cheyenne, which will be the State s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified historic rehabilitation project. Many examples of successful projects exist throughout Wyoming, including the Firehouse in Casper and Commerce Block in Glenrock. Rehabilitation projects currently underway include the Dinneen Building in Cheyenne, and 1st National Bank Building in Rock Springs. The architects who are making these buildings come alive again will present on the projects and what it takes to make them happen. Myers, A.I.A., Myers Anderson Architects, PLLC, Evanston, Wyoming Moderator: Alvin Weiderspahn, Advisor to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Rocky Mountain Region 3 p.m. 4 p.m. Redevelopment: Getting it Done in Casper s Old Yellowstone District The Old Yellowstone District used to be a thriving business area with retail businesses located along the Yellowstone Highway, the primary arterial to Yellowstone Park. The businesses not only supported the commercial needs of travelers headed to the Park, but the area offered industrial support to the Amoco Refinery which was located immediately west of the district. Over time, this area declined. City leadership and committed neighborhood stakeholders created the Old Yellowstone District as a redevelopment area adjacent to the downtown core. Liz Becher from the City of Casper and Paul Meyer, a property owner and City Council member, will present on how this redevelopment area came to be and what is keeping it going. Join this tour of downtown Casper and the Old Yellowstone District, and visit a variety of sites that each tell a unique story about the power of reinvestment, historic preservation, volunteerism, creative funding, and partnerships. Refer to the map in your conference packet for the locations that are open for the tour. Enjoy them at your own pace and visit with the owners and business representatives for a personal rendition of each redevelopment project. 5 Conference Schedule continued Saturday, April 30: 9:15 10:15 a.m. Is My School Historic?, Strausner Student Center CE :15 a.m. 10:30 a.m. Break, CE :30 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Saving Your School 12:00 p.m. Sandwich Box Lunch This session will help answer questions about the historic and architectural significance of Wyoming schools, and how to evaluate individual school buildings. Participants will learn about the history and architecture of Wyoming schools, from Territorial days through the Progressive and New Deal eras to the 1960s. Speakers will introduce the new historic context study of schools in Wyoming and provide guidance in how to use the accompanying Multiple Property Documentation Form to evaluate schools and nominate them to the National Register of Historic Places. Speakers: Mary Humstone, Board Member, Alliance for Historic Wyoming Clay Fraser, Principal, Fraser Design Kara Hahn, National Register Coordinator, State Historic Preservation Office Moderator: Mary Hopkins, State Historic Preservation Officer In this interactive session, speakers will discuss issues in preserving historic school buildings from the point of view of the citizen, city government and the School Facilities Commission. Case studies will include Natrona County High School in Casper and South Elementary School in Lander. Session attendees will be encouraged to share ideas and experiences in advocating for preservation and protection of historic school buildings, and to discuss the challenges they face in their own communities. 6 Conference Schedule continued Saturday, April 30: 12:30 p.m. 2:00 p.m. Sandwich Box Lunch, Natrona County High School Auditorium Lobby Tour of Natrona County High School 2:00 p.m. 2:30 p.m Closing Plenary, Auditorium As part of the Preserve Wyoming Conference, on Saturday, April 30th we will meet in the auditorium lobby at Natrona County High School and tour this remarkable example of Collegiate Gothic architecture. Designed by local Casper architects Garbutt, Weidner and Sweeny, and built between 1924 and 1927, NCHS remains in active use as a high school. Subsequent additions included an indoor pool, built in 1929; gymnasium, built in 1931; classrooms and band room, built in 1957; vocation technology classrooms, built in 1959; vocational education building, built in 1974; classroom and cafeteria building, built in 1977; and library addition, built in NCHS was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in During the tour we will observe such character defining features as the traditionally proportioned and unique terra cotta and brick detailing on the exterior, the south lawn distinguishing this landmark structure within an established residential neighborhood, the beautiful auditorium and lobby, a variety of classrooms and offices, the indoor swimming pool, and gymnasium. We will also observe the numerous more contemporary additions and talk about the role they play within the historic fabric of the original structure. Leading a strong vision to the future, the Natrona County School District and the Wyoming School Facilities Commission is planning a significant renovation and addition for NCHS. We will observe several challenges and opportunities that the existing conditions of NCHS present to the goals of creating a successful 21st century learning environment. We will end our tour in the auditorium for the Preserve Wyoming Closing Plenary.
