1 s Art in Architecture Student Design Competition welcomes you to The Art in Architecture Student Design Competition, sponsored by Heapy Engineering. This 36 th annual competition is an extra curricular activity that introduces you to architecture through the participation in a design project. You will be provided with the opportunity to interact with design professionals and students of design from Miami University, who will serve as mentors and assist you in this learning experience. All students are encouraged, but are not required, to seek the help of an advisor or teacher. We are offering some great prizes, including college scholarships. Sinclair Community College is generously sponsoring the SCC Pathways Award of 15 semester hours at SCC, while the Honor and Merit Award college scholarships can be used at any college of the winner s choice. All awards will be announced at the Awards Presentation at the end of the competition. Eligibility The program is designed for college bound high school students, grades 9 through 12, interested in art, architecture, or design. The competition is open to all students within AIA Dayton s nine county geographic region (Champaign, Clark, Darke, Greene, Logan, Miami, Montgomery, Preble and Shelby Counties) and/or zip codes beginning with 453, 454, 455, and 458. The event is limited to the first 60 students who return their registration form with the $25 per student registration fee. Teachers and advisors are encouraged to share in the fun and can register for free. Everyone who completes the competition will receive a t shirt and certificate! Teams are not permitted. Instructors, architects, college architecture students, friends, family, and other competition entrants may advise you, but the work is to be your own. Resources and Examples Please visit our website for links to program info, examples of past projects, design reference sheets and other useful resources. Sinclair Community College Students have graciously constructed a Revit massing model to be used in your project. It can be found at our website. Site context must be considered and must be present within your drawings. Please utilize this to scale model. Questions and Communication Competition participants may address questions about the competition or project to AIA Dayton at info@aiadayton.org. A member of the Student Design Committee will respond in a timely manner. Jury The competition will be judged by a distinguished group of architects and design professionals. In the event a scholarship winner is unable to use the award, it will be donated to the next Student Design Competition.

2 Project Display and Awards Ceremony Projects will be on display at Third Perk Coffee House. The awards ceremony will take place in March at Heapy Engineering. Attendance by all participants is highly encouraged as there will be opportunities for networking and interaction with some of Dayton s top design professionals and educators! The Project As a parallel to the upcoming Levitt Pavilion Project, this year s program is an outdoor performance venue The Stage at First Flight located at Dave Hall Plaza in the heart of downtown. It is to be a public space for 5,000 people to experience the performing arts. The stage will host approximately 50 performances a year. When not used as a venue the stage and surrounding area will serve as a park and plaza for the people of Dayton. Program Provide the following: Open air stage (2) Dressing rooms (2) Performer Bathrooms Backstage area Artist Green room Storage building Backstage office for pavilion staff Lawn seating (sloped lawn area for approx. 5,000 people) Landscaping Loading dock Merchandise vendor area Food vendor area Public restrooms (Approx toilet facilities) Prominent horizontal signage naming the structure Digital screens VIP area Site The program site is in downtown Dayton on South Main Street, between 4th Street and 5th Street. The design of your site must incorporate the existing surrounding architecture, landscaped areas, sidewalks, sculptures and Bike Share. Required Drawings The minimum drawings required for your presentation are listed below. There is a lot of information that needs to be on your project board and careful consideration must be given to the layout so as to clearly demonstrate your design to the judges. Clearly label all drawing views and scales. All work is to be displayed on 1 (one) 20 X 30 foam core board or other flat, rigid, stable board oriented vertically 20 across the bottom and top, 30 up the sides. Threedimensional objects attached to the board may project outward from the board up to six inches. Use white glue such as Elmer s or Sobo, spray glue such as 3M Spray Mount, or heavy duty double stick mounting tape. These projects will be hung in a gallery, so make sure everything is firmly attached. On your 20 x 30 vertically oriented board you are required to have: Site Plan 1 = 50 Overall Stage Floor Plan (1/4 or 1/8 = 1 0 recommended scale) Stage Elevation (1/4 or 1/8 = 1 0 recommended scale) Stage Section (1/2 or 1/4 = 1 0 recommended scale) Minimum of one three dimensional rendered perspective, interior or exterior Concept Statement (Max 150 words)

3 Other elements to consider adding to your board include: Physical building model (to be attached to the board) Collage of images that inspired your design Concept sketches showing progression of ideas Any extra details to enhance the design or graphic presentation Your presentation must convey the design intent. Presentation is one half of your score and will be what draws the judges to your project. Drawings and graphics may overlap so long as they are distinguishable from each other. Be creative and try varying colors and textures. Multitask designing your project and laying out your board. Create clean edges with the board and drawings and be neat with the use of glue. Add notes to describe your work. Remember the board takes place of verbal presentation! Submission Entries All entries must have a sealed envelope securely fastened to the back of the presentation board. The envelope will contain a copy of the entrant s name, school, and grade. Entries having the student's name or that of the school displayed in any way on the front or back of the presentation board so as to disclose their identity will be disqualified. There is no limit on the number of entries per school. Ownership Once submitted for jury the projects are the property of. shall have the right to publicize, display, or authorize the reproduction of any and all design submissions, giving proper credit to the designer in each case. All entries are submitted at the designer's risk. Reasonable care will be used in handling, but no responsibility for their safety is implied. may choose to hold or release the projects at its discretion. accepts no responsibility for unclaimed drawings or models. Due to limited display space some projects may not be displayed in the gallery but will be displayed at the Awards Presentation. Schedule The schedule begins with a charrette, which is a fun, fast paced creative workshop. Working with architects and Miami University architecture students, participants will enjoy creative and challenging design exercises. Bring your ideas or concepts for the project and we will work with you to start to develop your design project. We will also have two Saturday sessions to provide design feedback to the students. Each of these sessions will include a short educational component or architectural office tour, before the individual critiques. January 20, 2017 January 21, 2017 Registration deadline.
