6 THURSDAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT March 21, 7:45 a.m. 9:15 a.m. Constructability of Stucco Using Continuous Insulation Donald E. Smith, CCS, Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industry There have always been questions about constructability of claddings when using continuous insulation as required by the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code. This session will present the results of a stucco test panel built using continuous insulation thicknesses required for Climate Zone 7. Donald E. Smith, CCS, is AWCI s director of technical services. He has more than 40 years of experience in the construction industry and has worked for and with major architectural firms and contractors. From Concept to Reality: Using Technology & Pre-Fab to Bring Ideas to Life Keith Giddens and Michael Vickery, BakerTriangle Many wall and ceiling contractors struggle to see the benefit of implementing technology into their business. In this session, we ll take a look at how BakerTriangle leveraged technology to bring the concepts of Morphosis Architects to reality on the Perot Museum of Nature & Science project. Keith Giddens joined BakerTriangle in 1995 as a field employee and has worked in their estimating and project management departments before filling the role of director of virtual design and construction at their corporate office located in Dallas. He has worked on many projects that incorporated complex geometry including the Perot Museum of Nature & Science in Dallas and the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts in San Antonio. Michael Vickery is senior vice president of BakerTriangle, a Texas based drywall, acoustical and plaster specialty contractor. In the past several years Vickery has focused on how to better differentiate BakerTriangle from other specialty contractors, and the use of technology for prefabrication has been one way to create such differentiators. 6 AWCI s Convention & Intex Expo

Today buildings of every category now incorporate innovative, abstract curved forms and shapes in their design. Including elegant compoundcurved surfaces for a project is both beneficial and pleasing to clients, but these shapes also create unique structural, fabrication and installation challenges. A collaborative BIM approach between the design and construction professionals optimizes project results, increases value to the owner, reduces waste and maximizes efficiency through all phases of design, fabrication and construction. Miami s newest jewel, the New World Symphony by Gehry Partners, will be used as a case study to show the benefits of using BIM. Chuck Mears, FAIA, began studying the intricacies of curves years ago as the owner of a retail construction company for the 16 years prior to his founding of Radius Track. Joaquin Riera is vice president and senior project manager at Lotspeich Company, Inc., a specialty contractor in Miami. In 17 years at Lotspeich he has estimated and managed the work for many commercial and institutional buildings. 8 AWCI s Convention & Intex Expo

These seminars (gypsum, building envelope and stucco) were developed for owners and upper and middle management project managers, foremen and estimators. Each seminar provides seven hours of education and will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 22, with a break from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. so participants can walk the trade show floor and have lunch. Registration fees after Feb. 15, 2013, are $245 for AWCI members and $295 for non-members. Exterior Envelope Doing It Right The 2012 International Energy Conservation Code promises to offer challenges to anyone in the construction industry who designs and installs exterior wall assemblies. The code has new stringent requirements for thermal resistance as well as new thresholds of performance for water and air tightness. Today s architects need to know how to design to meet the IECC requirements. They must also provide solutions when details aren t always available and the requirements are constantly changing. This forces contractors to struggle with constructing exterior assemblies with cladding over multiple inches of continuous insulation and highly complex air and water barriers. This course is aimed at contractors and architects who want to expand their knowledge about the IECC s exterior thermal envelope requirement for exterior wall assemblies when combined with ASTM and ASHRAE construction standards. About the Speaker Robert Grupe spent more than 38 years with United States Gypsum Company where he held various technical and management positions. Activities included product and system design and technical consultation to the AEC community.
