WEDNESDAY March 29 AWCI OPENING SESSION AND AWARDS BRUNCH SPEAKER Co-Pilot of U.S. Airways Flight 1549, The Miracle on the Hudson On a bright, 20-degree afternoon in January 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 accelerated down New York La Guardia Airport s main runway, loaded with 155 passengers and crew, headed for Charlotte, N.C. Everything was normal until First Officer Jeff Skiles spotted a formation of Canada geese almost directly ahead. In matter of seconds, he heard numerous thunks as the birds impacted the aircraft. Both engines immediately failed. Captain Chesley Sullenberger took over flying the plane and lowered the nose down to retain airspeed. Within seconds, the pilots made the decision that returning to LaGuardia was simply not possible they d have to fly over densely populated areas and there was no guarantee they d make it. Surrounded by nothing but skyscrapers and neighborhoods, they decided to head to the only open, flat space available the Hudson River. During the general session on March 29, Skiles will detail the lessons, training and scenarios that led to the Miracle on the Hudson and what businesses can take away from it. Meet Jeff Skiles following the Awards Brunch! He will be in USG booth #801 until 1 p.m. The first 50 people to visit USG s booth will receive a free autographed copy of the DVD Sully. Sponsored by USG Jeff Skiles a 4 AWCI s Convention & Intex Expo

WEDNESDAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT March 29, 7:30 a.m. 9 a.m. The ABCs of Lathing & Plastering: Focus on the Fundamentals This session will focus on up to five specific areas to control during installation, citing the ASTM requirements and how to best comply in the field. No secrets will be revealed, just important reminders to mitigate problems. In 2002, after 40 years successful experience as a plaster and drywall subcontractor, Mike Boyd formed Boyd Consulting Group to serve architects, building owners, developers, property managers, general contractors, exterior wall subcontractors, attorneys, insurance companies, real estate agents and homeowners. 7 WEDNESDAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT March 29, 7:30 a.m. 9 a.m. Don t Let Your Wall Designs Go Up in Smoke! A Look at CFS Framed Wall Limiting Heights while Integrating Fire-Resistant Performance Requirements One of the fundamental attributes of a cold-formed steel framed gypsum board partition is its inherent fire-resistive properties. Another attribute is the ability to maintain a project s critical wall thickness requirement by altering steel stud thickness and spacing. The common tool to accomplish this task is the published limiting height table. However, like many a design process, there is a balancing act between differing requirements. In this case, it s the balance between structural capacity and fire resistance. This session will explore the structural principles that are used to develop limiting height tables and define key terms that are often used. Next we will look at what is required to maintain fire resistance with an emphasis on conflicts. Patrick W. Ford, P.E., is a principal of Matsen Ford Design Associates, Inc., a registered Professional Engineer in Wisconsin and in numerous other states, and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Institute of Steel Construction. He has also served as a subcommittee member of the American Iron and Steel Institute as well as AWCI, and is a past president of the Light Gauge Steel Engineers Institute (now the Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute). Robert Grupe is the director of technical services for AWCI. He spent more than 38 years with United States Gypsum where he held various technical and management positions. Activities included product and system design and technical consultation to the AEC community. He currently is a consultant to the construction community where he has worked on several large scale international construction projects. He has authored numerous articles and given presentations on fire, sound and environmental issues as they relate to wall and ceiling assemblies. March 26-30, 2017 Las Vegas, Nevada 7

THURSDAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT March 30, 8 a.m. 9:30 a.m. Land Mines and Gold Mines in Specifications, Codes and Engineering Requirements Every three years, new versions of the building codes are introduced. While some states adopt new codes immediately, others wait, review and often add their own requirements and deletions. Local municipalities will sometimes pile on even more addenda, making a code-compliant assembly in one jurisdiction not meet code in another. Keep your company ahead of the engineering and code learning curve by making sure you and your staff are up to speed on the latest requirements. Hear case studies about how some contractors have proactively worked with their code enforcement agencies for less painful inspections, and how others have used innovative techniques to get non-traditional materials and methods approved. Attendees will learn why some specification statements are land mines and others are gold mines, and they will understand the difference between performance specifications and prescriptive specifications and how to use both to their advantage. With over 25 years of drywall industry experience, Don Allen is director of engineering for Super Stud Building Products, Inc., and chairman of AISI s Education Committee. Having served over nine years as technical director for both the Steel Stud Manufacturers Association and the Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute, Allen has seen firsthand how some contractors have thrived and others have failed because of ambiguities and changes in the code. Allen has participated in the development of the International Building Code, and ASTM and American Iron and Steel Institute standards. Allen is a Registered and Board Certified Structural Engineer and a LEED Accredited Professional. 8 AWCI s Convention & Intex Expo

THURSDAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT March 30, 8 a.m. 9:30 a.m. Virtual and Augmented Reality to Reality This session looks into how virtual and augmented reality technologies are influencing the design and construction process, and how these technologies were utilized on multiple projects by converting Revit 3D models coupled with gaming technology and presented in virtual reality format with Samsung Gear VR goggles. You will be able to virtually walk through the design process from the perspective of the owner, archtect, general contractor and subcontractor. Danielle Dy Buncio is the co-founder and president of VIATechnik, a construction and engineering services firm transforming the construction industry through virtual design and construction by blending global human capital with cutting-edge construction technologies. The firm s innovative and landmark projects have included everything from a point cloud BIM of one of the world s largest breweries to the creation of a virtual gaming environment of a nuclear power plant. Prior to founding VIATechnik, Dy Buncio worked for general contractors in the San Francisco Bay Area, Sydney and Chicago. As a civil engineer and a LEED Accredited Professional, she has extensive commercial building, heavy civil and marine construction experience. Andrew Price is a project designer and the in-house BIM/VR expert at Hunter Douglas Architectural, with a decade of experience. Prior to joining the Hunter Douglas team, he was the senior project coordinator for SmartBIM, LLC and oversaw the BIM content development division, developing highly parametric and intelligent models for the leading manufacturers to be utilized by the AEC industry. 10 THURSDAY OPTIONAL EDUCATION 2017 March 30, 7:30 a.m. 5 p.m. Capitalize on your education! AWCI is offering attendees an opportunity to increase their knowledge by attending a Doing It Right seminar on March 30. These seminars (exterior envelope, gypsum and stucco) were developed for owners and upper and middle management project managers, foremen and estimators. 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Course break from 10 a.m. 1 p.m. for lunch on your own and walking the trade show floor. Exterior Envelope Doing It Right Gypsum Doing It Right Stucco Doing It Right Your registration for a Doing It Right seminar includes a complimentary trade show pass to visit the Intex Expo on March 29 and 30. Register by Feb. 28, 2017, to receive the Early Bird Discount of $265 for AWCI members and $325 for non-members. Registration fees after Feb. 28, 2017, are $300 for AWCI members and $360 for non-members. Exterior Envelope Doing It Right Even though energy codes have been in place for several years now, they continue to be a source of confusion to architects and contractors as they design, bid and install exterior walls. The International Energy Conservation Code has made these exterior wall systems more complex to design and construct. The new code s continuous insulation requirement combined with ever changing ASTM and ASHRAE construction standards are presenting major design and construct challenges. Today s architects need to know how to design to meet the IECC requirements. They must also provide solutions when details aren t always available. This forces contractors to struggle with constructing exterior assemblies with cladding over multiple inches of continuous insulation and highly complex air and water barriers. This program will clarify the subtle but significant differences between the IECC and ASHRAE 90.1 and how that relates to LEED initiatives. Moisture migration and heat transfer are the fundamental elements that drive the codes and standards, and they too, can be confusing. Codes, standards and building science link to high performance wall systems, which are substantially more sophisticated than what was designed and built just a few years ago. Sophisticated high performing wall systems rely heavily on proper detailing and installation. This course starts with codes and standards, discusses the underlying building sciences, and ends with information for the job site with a goal to make a project successful. 10 AWCI s Convention & Intex Expo

THURSDAY OPTIONAL EDUCATION 2017 March 30, 7:30 a.m. 5 p.m. Robert Grupe, director of technical services for AWCI, spent more than 38 years with United States Gypsum Company where he held various technical and management positions. Las Vegas, an ever-changing fantasy land of a city, has seen unbelievable expansion since it emerged from the desert 100 years ago. For information on everything to do in Las Vegas, visit and vegas.com. Getting There Getting to Las Vegas is easy. Fly directly into the McCarran International Airport (LAS). Ground Transportation to Mandalay Bay Taxi fares are between $24 to $41 each way. Uber fares are between $12 to $30 each way. Lyft fares are between $11 and $23 each way. 31 WELCOME TO LAS VEGAS! Accommodations The official headquarters hotel and exclusive location for AWCI s Convention & Intex Expo is Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, 3950 Las Vegas Blvd. South. AWCI and Intex Expo attendees are extended special single or double occupancy group rates as shown below plus tax and resort fee: Friday Saturday Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday March 24 March 25 March 26 March 27 March 28 March 29 March 30 $205* $205* $145* $175* $205* $205* $145* *Plus a $23 Daily Resort Fee (discounted from the usual $33 per night). The resort fee includes high speed wireless internet service in guestroom and public areas, Cardio Center access located on the Beach Level, daily newspaper, unlimited local and 800-number calls, outgoing faxes, notary services and airline boarding pass printing at the business center desks or Concierge. You may opt-out of the resort fee when you check-in, but if Internet access is needed after opting out, the connection fee will be much higher than $23 per day. Beware any outside calls, s or faxes you may receive for discounted rates for Las Vegas hotels. AWCI does not use a housing company for room reservations. These calls are often scams that could result in your credit card information being compromised and no hotel room being reserved. Monday, March 6, is the cut-off date for room reservations, or earlier if the block of rooms sells out sooner. Reserve your room early online at awci.org/convention/hotel-travel. For questions regarding your reservation, please call (877) for assistance. Indicate you are with AWCI or Intex Expo to get group rates. Please ensure cancellations are made at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled arrival date in order to not be charged one night s room and tax. If you depart earlier than your booked departure date, the hotel will charge a one night room and tax penalty. All guaranteed reservations that fail to arrive on the scheduled arrival date will be considered no shows and a charge of one night s room and tax will be posted to the credit card on file.
