Even though physical sports are an element of recreation they do not define the full definition of what recreation truly is. The many physical and leisure recreational activities offered in the city of Tallahassee are a great way for students, faculty, staff and alumnus to explore the city while discovering new Explore the City. ways to promote great health and spiritual relaxation. Did you know that the Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park is located approximately 15 minutes from the Tookes Recreation Center? The state park offers patrons the opportunity to participate in biking, nature and equestrian trails, along with canoeing & kayaking, fishing, and much more. Extended information regarding the Alfred Maclay Park and other state parks like it can be located at, Customer Service: (850) Administration Office: (850) Fax: (850) Edit and Layout By Ileejah L. 2 Page 2 COME & PLAY!! Healthy Eating on a Budget Mission Statement We will continually endeavor to support the learning mission at Florida A&M University by providing a comprehensive and innovative program of recreational, leisure and fitness activities; encouraging student participation and the development of leadership This fall season is when everyone will try to get fall time fine, that is a given. But while some students have found balance in fitness routines, many are still trying to grasp the nutrition aspect, with expensive healthy food options being the culprit. So how can you build the summer body of your dreams without breaking the bank? The Farmer s Market, located downtown on the corner of Park Avenue and Monroe Street, offers admirable deals on fresh veggies and nutritious fruit. Patrons are encouraged to come out early on Saturday mornings to take advantage of the gracious discounts offered by venders. Another great location, which offers inexpensive, healthy food choices, is The Earth Fare on Applachee Parkway. On Wednesday students receive a 5 percent discount on already discounted items. It s a really neat place with over 85 percent of their edible inventory being organic. The foods are all natural with no additives or genetically modified tampering performed. Soul Vegetarian, on south Adams Street, is a vegan restaurant for people who really want to cut out meats and other foods high in fat. On Sunday s sandwich and dinner plates are half off so this is great for college students who tend to live on a budget. The Farmers Market and Soul Vegetarian restaurant are a couple hidden treasures around Tallahassee that will be sure to help individuals find inexpensive healthier food choices, while also sticking to their lifestyle change. Besides implementing healthier choices into your diet to maintain your summer body, another alternative would be to cut out meat. Meat products are the priciest items on the food pyramid, so consuming less of it will augment your wallet. Eating more rice and beans is another way to maintain your goal. Rice and beans both carry a good source of nutrients and are high in fiber making you full faster. The last healthy food alternative on a budget would be stocking up on frozen and canned food. Both frozen and canned fruits and vegetables are just as healthy as their other fresh picking counterparts just cheaper. Now that you are aware of the less expensive ways of healthy living it s time to apply that to your fall regime to build that new fall body. By: Jeremy Hannah skills; meeting the needs of a multi-cultural institution; and fostering the spirit of teamwork, holistic living, and good sportsmanship.
3 September 2013 Issue CUSTOMER SATISFACTION IS OUR PRIMARY FOCUS! Page 3 7 Hills Café feeds famu Walking into Florida A & M University s Hansel E. Tookes Sr. Recreation Center, and being paralyzed by the delicious aroma of chicken and turkey sandwiches is now the norm. The 7 Hills Café, owned and operated by Antony Manning, is one of FAMU s best kept secrets and a hidden treasure of the Rec Center. The café offers gym patrons the opportunity to dine on healthy choices such as: The Hill on Wheels; a grilled chicken sandwich topped with jalapenos, or the grilled chicken salad; a fresh garden salad topped with grilled chicken and other veggies. Manning, who was in the restaurant business, says he loves to cook. When I heard of the opportunity I jumped on it, Manning said. I have a deep passion for cooking. The café is dedicated to providing affordable meals for its customers and do that by purchasing its products from local farmers. We keep our prices low by buying local veggies and having our meats delivered in bulk, he said. Rattlers from all over are welcome. We are sure the food will have you hooked and craving more. The 7 Hills Café is located in the lobby of the Rec center, right across from the customer service desk. The hours of operation are Monday-Friday 11 a.m. 2 p.m. and then 4 p.m.-9 p.m. Recipe of the Month: 3-Ingredient Pulled Pork Prep Time:5 minutes Total Time:6 hours Servings:8 Servings INGREDIENTS 1 (2 pound) pork tenderloin (pork shoulder/butt can also be used, or try with another favorite meat) 1 (12 ounce) can of root beer 1 (18 ounce) bottle of your favorite bbq sauce hamburger buns 1. Place the pork tenderloin in a slow cooker and pour the can of root beer over the meat. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours or until pork shreds easily with a fork. Tookes Center Volunteer Appreciation!! It has become quite apparent the early morning shift, helped with the set up and break down to the Hansel E. Tookes Recreation Center that it would of many events such as: The New Student Orientation, and the be non-existent without the Summer Fest Crab Boil Extravaganza. Oh behalf of the Hansel E. generous hours of dedication put forth by our wonderful Tookes Recreation Center, we volunteers. thank you for your service. Jabulania M., of Gainesville As the summer term comes to a close we would like to take the time to honor volunteers who have gone above and beyond what was asked this semester. 2. After pork has cooked, drain and discard the root beer. Shred the pork and place it back in the slow cooker. Pour the barbecue sauce over the pork and stir to combine. Serve immediately or keep warm in slow cooker until ready to serve. Serve on hamburger buns. ENJOY! 5 September 2013 Issue Page 5 Bend it like a Rattler If you did not know that Campus Rec has a soccer club team, now you know. We have a deep passion for soccer, seeing as it is the worlds most popular sport, but among the African-American community it is not as loved as one may think. At the majority of HBCU s a soccer team is unheard of, but at FAMU and the Campus Rec Center we plan to change that. The Rec intramural soccer team is the University of Florida Cup Champions, and plans to dominate the game once again this year with its first game on September 8, 2013 against Georgia Southern University. For all interested soccer players please contact coach Leon Prosper at or join the team everyday, except Wednesday for practice. And come out and support the team to SCORE, SCORE, and SCORE again!! Weight-lifting Competition, 2nd, 1st and 3rd place winners. TOOKES PHOTO BOOTH!! Rattler Fitness! Rattler Wellness! Rattler Strength! Staying Fit, Having Fun and Building Memories. Rattler Fitness!! I must say that I have not only grown as a person, but also a leader and that is thanks to the rec. the facility to the greatest of my ability. I am literally in awe at all of the activities and events we have scheduled for our students, faculty, staff, and alum this semester.
