2 After over 7 years of planning, grant requests and fund-raising, we are almost ready to start moving equipment and workers into the Lafayette North expansion! The September meeting of the Board of Directors was held at North so that the Board of Directors could see the new facilities first-hand. Rob Libera and Mike McMillen were on hand to lead the tour and answer any questions. Mike is Chair of the North Expansion Committee. We added 2,000 square feet of lunchroom and community area; 5,000 square feet of production; and 3,000 square feet of high clear warehousing. There is an inside access between the buildings for workers and staff, and an outside ramp (The Kaufmann Corridor) for the transfer of goods and equipment, if necessary! The red brick exterior not only complements our existing structure, but it helps our facility stand out from the surrounding buildings. It has great "curb appeal"! We are already preparing to welcome the 65 lucky new workers from the surrounding North County communities. This was also the occasion during which we accepted, with regret, Ron Nelson's resignation from our Board. Ron was accompanied by his daughter Sandra Holtmeyer, who along with the rest of the Nelson family can be seen at almost any of Lafayette's activities. Ron has served on the Board of Directors for the past 33 years. He was also the "project manager" for the 30,000 square foot expansion at West in Ron was presented with a copy of the "Board Resolution" granting him the title and position of "Board Member Emeritus". But Ron never stopped giving. In addition, he was given a picture of the "Courtyard and Picnic" area he designed at our West location. Ron not only designed it but he solicited funds and materials and helped with the actual construction of the Courtyard. In appreciation, this area that is enjoyed daily by 230 grateful workers, will from this day forward be known as "NELSON'S LANDING"! Photo by Barlow Photography Apple Computers was formed, gas was.59 a gallon, Connect Four was a popular game, and Kenny McLuen started working at the newly formed Lafayette Industries. Everyone celebrated Kenny with cheers and applause as he accepts congratulations from Rob and all the employees and staff. Thank you Kenny for 40 years of productive and rewarding work. FLU IMMUNIZATION CLINICS SCHEDULED Flu immunization clinics have been scheduled for both Lafayette North and West. North s flu immunizations will be given on Thursday, October 6 th from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon, and West s flu immunizations will be given on Thursday, October 13 th from 9:00 a.m. 12:00 noon. We hope you will take advantage of this service, and get your flu protection for the upcoming winter flu season. The paperwork to fill out and return for the immunizations was due on September 23 rd. In preparation for the day you get your flu shot, you might want to wear a short-sleeved shirt that day. That way you don t have to roll your sleeves up that much.

5 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVES It is that time of year again when Knights of Columbus Councils around St. Louis gather together to don their yellow aprons, give you their best smile and convince you that you cannot live without that Tootsie Roll in their hand. There will be opportunities for Lafayette West and North staff, parents and guardians to help collect by signing up for a two hour shift at different locations in St. Louis. I have already heard from two Councils St. Clement s in Des Peres will have their Tootsie Roll Drive from Friday, October 7 th - Sunday, October 9 th. There are locations in Des Peres like Daily Bread, Dierberg s, The Egg and I, etc. We have heard from the St. Clement s Tootsie Roll Chairman that there are still 27 shifts not covered. Please call Becky S. if you can help out at (636) , x1100. She will sign you up if you are interested in taking a shift with this group. St. Joseph s Tootsie Roll dates are the following: Walmart (141 & Manchester) collection dates are Friday, September 30 th - Sunday, September 2 nd. These shifts start at 9:00 a.m. and run on through the weekend. The other location for the St. Joseph s Tootsie Roll drive is Shop n Save (located at 141 and Big Bend). The dates for it are Thursday, October 6 th - Saturday, October 8 th. Its shifts start at 10:00 a.m. on (Thursday and Friday) and 9:00 a.m. on (Saturday). If you are interested in any of these opportunities to help out the Knights, it goes directly towards helping Lafayette as well. We really need your help this year!! Thank you in advance to everyone. 6 CRAIG MAREK VISITS OUR NATION S CAPITOL By Gloria and Wayne Marek (Proud Parents) Gloria and Craig Marek on The Big Bus tour Craig and Nick, our tour guide Craig in front of the Capitol Building Gloria, Wayne and Craig at the Dubliner Craig and The Real Spirit of St. Louis Gloria and Craig and The Trip Home When we arrived in Washington DC we were greeted with HOT and HUMID weather (record highs), but thanks to cold water and air conditioning we were able to survive. We stayed at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill with a fantastic view of the Capitol Building from the front of the hotel. On our first night we had dinner at the Dubliner, an Irish pub (great Irish stew), and after dinner we decided to take a slow walk back to our hotel. On our way we practically bumped into former Speaker-of-the-House, Newt Gingrich, as he came out of a nearby building. This was our only brush with a Washington celebrity. We took the Big Bus Hop-on Hopoff tour each day to get to all of the different sites, and we also used it to take an evening tour to see the sites lit up at night. We really enjoyed our tour of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum where we saw the original Wright Flyer (the first plane to fly) and the real Spirit of St. Louis (flown by Charles Lindbergh). We also visited Arlington National Cemetery, the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials and the Washington Monument. On our tour of the U.S. Capitol our guide gave us an excellent history of the Capitol Building along with an early history of the United States. Even with the heat we really enjoyed our trip to our Nation s Capitol. 3 rd ANNUAL LAFAYETTE FISHING OUTING Let s go fishing with Tom Heitert and Rod Goelz on Saturday, October 1 st! We will fish, rain or shine. If severe weather approaches, we will cancel on site. No need to reserve a spot. Bring your own gear, bait, snacks and drink.
