2 VOLUNTEER INFORMATION Volunteer opportunities will require a criminal background check. *ongoing volunteer activities involving students and field trip chaperones are required to have criminal background checks. *if you have had a criminal background check done, and have been a volunteer at least once a year since the check s completion, you DO NOT need to have another. *to complete a check visit the ONE volunteer page and complete information for the criminal background check online. No more paper forms!! programs/volunteer_network/for_volunteers Please send a note in the morning with your child each day if they have a change in their transportation plan for the end of the day. With 230 students in our school, it is very difficult to deliver personal messages at the end of the day. Please make after school plans, transportation decisions, visits to a friend s house, etc. ahead of time. The end of the day gets very busy. Emergency situations are different. We will do our best to be of service to you in an emergency. Thank you for your help. Parents- Just a reminder, volunteer opportunities will be posted online throughout the year. You must sign up online and not with the teaching staff. If you already have a volunteer account, log in at myvolunteerpage.com, select the opportunity you are interested in and sign up. (If it is full/locked, you have the option of being put on a back up list.) If you haven't created an account yet, visit tiny.cc/wsdone and click the For Volunteers tab on the left. Complete Step 1 and Step 2 (Step 2, if the opportunity requires a criminal background check) Remember, volunteering in the classroom and going on field trips requires a criminal background check. They do take time to process so please PLAN AHEAD. For questions or to learn more contact Roxane Hagedorn, rhagedor@wausauschools.org (preferred) or Lice Facts The Facts of Lice Did you know Lice cannot jump or leap or fly from person to person. 8 Since its beginning in 1985, the Red Ribbon Campaign has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America. Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated at Maine Elementary during the week of October 23-25, Our theme this year is Your Future Is Key, So Stay Drug Free. This is the perfect time to talk to your child(ren) about the importance of living a drug-free life to achieve their goals. College, careers, and citizenship all rely on healthy choices and a commitment to strengthen our community. The following is our celebration schedule for Maine Elementary: Monday (23rd): Sock it to drugs (wear your craziest socks) Tuesday (24th): Without drugs, we can be anything (career day - dress up in your favorite career outfits) Wednesday (25th): Wear red and take a stand against drugs. (wear a red shirt Maine School Fun!
9 The good news about bullying is it can be successfully addressed if we provide a three-pronged intervention approach. The first prong must involve creating a culture of compassion within the school, where the student body learns to see bullying for what it is: An immature response to internal hurts and insecurities. This focuses on creating a social climate where bullying is viewed as very uncool, and bystanders stand up for kids who are being hurt. The second prong empowers all students with practical behavioral and emotional skills for becoming unattractive targets of bullying. Students learn how to view and react to bullying in ways that empower resiliency. The final prong involves addressing students who bully. These interventions involve pragmatic strategies for increasing supervision, limiting the bully from situations or areas where they mistreat others, etc. These interventions also involve attempting to help the bully by understanding and addressing the underlying social and emotional factors Thanks for reading! Our goal is to help as many families as possible. If this is a benefit, forward it to a friend. Dr. Charles Fay
10 MEMORANDUM WAUSAU SCHOOL DISTRICT Robert Tess Chief Finance & Business Services Officer 415 Seymour Street Wausau, WI Phone: (715) TO: FROM: Building Principals Robert Tess DATE: October 9, 2017 RE: Inclement Weather/ Excused Absence/Schoolwork If First Student is unable to pickup students because of hazardous and/or impassable road conditions, and parents are unable to transport their child(ren) to school because of road conditions (or extremely cold conditions), the student will receive an excused absence provided the school is notified of the absence. It is further recommended that parents, teachers, and students make arrangements ahead of time (before winter begins) as to how schoolwork would be made up. These arrangements should also be published in the school newsletter or sent home to parents. cc: Board of Education Longfellow Administrative Team Wausau School District IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR WSD RURAL SCHOOL BUS STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS Occasionally, weather-related road conditions within our School District may vary drastically depending on location. For instance, weather and road conditions may allow those students who live in or near the city or on county trunk roads (the lettered county roads) to arrive at school with little or no trouble. Certain rural, secondary roads may, however, simultaneously be impassable or dangerous for buses to travel. In this event, the District will only run buses in the city, on county trunk roads, and rural roads, which are safe for travel. Should this situation occur, District and First Student officials will determine which areas are unsafe for bus travel. The District will attempt to announce via television and radio the particular areas that are affected. If the school bus is unable to pickup the student and parents are unable to transport their child(ren) to school because of road conditions, Wausau School District students will receive an excused absence from the District provided the parent/guardian notifies the school. Parents of private school students will need to follow the administrative guidelines for their school.
11 MEMORANDUM WAUSAU SCHOOL DISTRICT Robert Tess, CSRM Chief Finance & Business Services Officer 415 Seymour Street Wausau, WI Phone: To: From: Parents and Staff Robert Tess Date: October 10, 2017 Re: Emergency School Closing First Student Bus Arrival Times Below are approximate times yellow buses would arrive at the schools to pick up students when schools are in session and an early dismissal is necessary. Students will be dropped off at their normal afternoon drop off location. These are examples of a variety of dismissal times; students not riding yellow buses may leave school at the announced dismissal time and parents may pick up students at the announced dismissal time. Parents should make every attempt to pick up their child within an hour of the announced dismissal time. Please know buses may be delayed. Your patience and cooperation are appreciated.
