It was a quiet affair with a group of 50 or so members of the zone. I got to meet many Lions that I have only known by name. Along with the scheduled festivities, Lion Flo Garza celebrated her **th birthday AND said a fond Aloha to the group. She is re-locating to California to be closer to family. The night was similar to ours in format with the honoring of their last charter member and then the installation. This was followed by the door prizes and the a raffle. Nothing as elaborate as ours but, none the less, a good time was had by all. Pearl Country Club serves liquor so there was none of the free flowing like our event is. I contributed a six pack of assorted brews to the raffle. The Lion that won it asked if it tasted like Miller Lite... Submitted by Lion Phil District 50 Convention (cont.) of the many projects/programs your membership dollars supports around the world including the United States. He emphasized the fact that your dues and contributions are passed on to the these projects with very little overhead costs and thus impacts these recipients in an even more meaningful manner than donations to some other charitable organizations. The Fun night festivities later in the evening was well attended with a hilarious theme using a mystery bag as a main component. Concurrently the following three Vice District Governors (Lions Jim Bryan, Kelvin Moniz, and Nadine Nishioka) hosted a celebratory party to welcome their supporters and friends and anyone wanting to meet the future District Governors for D50. That function was also well attended and ran well into the late hours. Due to family obligations there is no report on the Saturday functions. 3 78th Annual Hawaii D50 Convention Begins with a Hawaiian Theme On Thursday May 22nd the 87th annual D50 convention formally began at the Aloha Pavilion of the Ritz Carlton Hotel at Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii. The Flag ceremony was presided over by PDG Ernie Chang. One of the notable attendees was Immediate Past International President (IPIP) Wayne Madden and his CIS Linda. In celebration of our Hawaiian roots the ceremony was initiated with a conch shell welcome by members of the Maui Lions delegation dressed in the traditional loincloth. PDG Ernie Chang gave a very informative lecture on the history of the American and Indiana flags in honor of IPIP Madden followed by enthusiastic renditions of the 4th stanza of Francis Scott Keys Star Spangled Banner as well as the Indiana state song. The colorful ceremony was co-chaired by Lions Denis Elms and Jackie Yamamoto. Who were given a round of applause for their hard work. A spirited Taiko drum routine provided the closing performance. Following this was a reception hosted by the San Diego Eye Bank president and its Board of Directors to celebrate the successful negotiations surrounding the friendly takeover of the day to day operations of the Hawaii Eye Bank by the San Diego Eye Bank. The Hawaii Eye Bank will continue to be known as the Hawaii Lions Eye Bank and will have Hawaii Lions Foundation representation on its Board of Directors. It was a great opportunity to meet the key individuals who will be keeping the Hawaii Lions Eye Bank tradition operational in Hawaii. The general sessions on Friday were ably conducted by DG Lion Mark Mizuno with reports from his cabinet members. A brief report on the preparations for the Honolulu 2015 LCI convention was provided by Lion Ken Nishibun and Al Sasaki. Following the reports the annual meeting of the Hawaii Lions Foundation (HLF) was conducted by President Lion Bob Lee with Koko Head Lion President, Selvin Chin- Chance, in attendance. The HLF annual report outlining the years activities was delivered followed by the annual parade of checks. The Parade of Checks was well supported and contributions appeared to have exceeded last year s totals. The luncheon speaker was IPIP Wayne Madden who delivered a media presentation showing highlights (Continued on page 2) 3 of 5 pages
