1 June 2013 Ka Leo O Hawaii Kai Page 1 The Voice of Hawaii Kai Vol. XL #12 Ka Leo O Hawaii Kai Monthly Bulletin of the Hawaii Kai Lions Club June 2013 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Greetings, Fellow Lions! We re near the end of the year so let s finish it off with a bang at our annual Father s Day Breakfast event. I know we are among the best clubs for organization, member support and participation. We are still striving for top sales so do your best to sell your tickets so we can do the most to service our community. There is one more Sunday to join us at Burger King to canvas the local neighborhoods. Lion Toshi proves to be a real trouper in spite of his recent knee surgery. I was his walking partner and we finished our route in no time and I was ready to call it a day but he wanted to do more, so we did one more street! With Lion Bunny as head of Manpower, I m finally at the front of the house, whereas I was always in the back no offense to our previous manpower coordinators I loved pancake batter all over me! I ll go wherever I m assigned. As the Bake Sale readies for business an open suggestion is why not try other avenues for sales since we ll be without Patty s boiled peanuts. There are some who do not bake or can t find the time. Do you have a green thumb for plants or are you a crafter? If you have something you are willing to donate, CIS Sylvia Nakakura will see how well it s received by the public and perhaps we can continue it next year. Contact either Sylvia (H) (C) or me so we can prepare for extra tables or space that is needed. The year must have been fun if it has flown by so fast. Incoming Prexy Bill, your year will be up before you know it. Our first general meeting will give you a better idea what needs to be acted upon to improve our club with Lion Ken conducting our club retreat/assessment. Besides our Pancake Breakfast preparation and the Big Day, there is one more general meeting and the 41 st Manoa Golf Classic on Jun 21. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the officers, members and companions-in-service of the club. We have a club that deserves to grow and prosper and will grow and prosper with your continued participation. Thank you for letting me serve you! Lion Prexy Cynthia `````````````````````````````````
2 June 2013 Ka Leo O Hawaii Kai Page 2 Hawaii Kai Library Time to Pay Annual Dedication Membership Dues for April 19, 2013 By Walter Kuroiwa By Richard Okamoto WE SERVE: OUR LIBRARY AND OUR COMMUNITY. Twenty-two of our Lions and CIS joined 10 Lions from Nagoya Joto Lions Club in our 26 th joint donation ceremony at Hawaii Kai Public Library. The donations were presented on Friday, April 19 at the Library to Ms. Colleen Lashway, Branch Manager of the Library. President Cynthia Chun of our club and President Yumiko Matsubara of the Nagoya club each presented $1000 donations. Additionally, the Nagoya Lions donated a miniature tea set and the novel Tale of Genji. The monetary donations were made to help the Library in purchasing books, periodicals, audio and visual materials and other references. So our contributions will serve the needs of many of the Library s clientele in years to come. After the ceremony, participants enjoyed refreshments courtesy of Friends of Hawaii Kai Public Library and socialized with each other. Those who attended in support of our clubs: President Cynthia Chun, PDG Roy Aoki, Delwin Ching, Tommy Chun, Alvin Hayashibara, Stanley Ito and CIS Sally, David Iwana, Walter Kuroiwa, CF Leu and CIS Aki, Kazu Nakano, Ken Nishibun, Toshi Nishioka and CIS Florence, Richard Okamoto, Peggy Oyama, Clara Ozaki, Apolonio Sindiong, Mino Takaesu and CIS Patsy, and Rick Yee. Ten Lions from Nagoya also attended. Bake Sale Preparation by CISes Upcoming on June 16, 2013 By Sylvia Nakakura Hi CIS s, the PANCAKE BREAKFAST will be here before we know it! It s time to go through recipes, pull out the favorites, and stock up on baking supplies, so designated Baking Days go smoothly. Big sellers last year were brownies, energy/granola bars, party mix, and peanut butter cookies. Every year kids come up asking for nut-free products. Let s try to offer some goodies for them. We won t have Patty s boiled peanuts this year, so we ll have to step it up to make up the difference. If anyone will be out of town, please consider baking in advance and we ll arrange for pick-up. Sandy Lee has volunteered to print up ingredient labels. Please (lees232@hawaii.rr.com) or send the recipe, including sale price and the number of labels needed. It would be helpful if everyone could stockpile shallow boxes, gift bags, and clean plastic bags for sale day. Thank you for your usual generosity and cooperation. Let s see if we can break last year s record! For any questions, contact Sylvia Nakakura at: (H) or (C) Dues for Active: $190 Affiliate: $94 Life: $147 40th May Day Celebration Kamiloiki School May 3, 2013 By Delwin Ching Hawaii Kai Lions Club was invited to see the May Day celebration at the school. Two members experienced May Day seen through the eyes of the school children and enjoyed the presentation at the Kamiloiki Elementary School Courtyard from 8:30 am to 10:00 am and refreshments that followed in the library. Three leis were given to the school. The special event is done every two years. Letters to the Editor By PDG Roy Aoki On the first bulletin of Lion Peggy Oyama s stewardship as Bulletin Editor, I wrote an article on GIRL POWER. This is a follow-up on her last bulletin of the year. I ended the article by saying GIRL POWER, GO GIRLS!!! I didn t mean for Cynthia to go to the Philippines (scam), Peggy to go to Canada and Clara to go to California. In any event, the girls proved to the Hawaii Kai Lions that they were capable leaders.
