Join Professor Ed O Donnell as he provides families a glimpse of life in a Holy Cross classroom. The topic: The Great Immigration Debate: The Past, Present, and Future of American Immigration. Most Americans are the descendants of immigrants, some recent and some in the distant past. And they tend to be very proud of the nation's immigration legacy and the idea of their ancestors as huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Yet throughout the history of the United States, Americans have often denounced particular immigrant groups (e.g., the Irish in the 1840s, Chinese in the 1870s, Jews and Italians in the 1890s, and more recently Mexicans and Arabs) as undesirable, dangerous, and unassimilable. Bishop Robert McManus of the Diocese of Worcester will preside, and Rev. Philip Boroughs, S.J., president of the College, will preach. Liturgical ministers and SPUD volunteers for the academic year will be recognized and commissioned, and music will be led by the Chapel Choir. 4:30 p.m. INTER-DENOMINATIONAL SERVICE OF PRAISE AND WORSHIP Smith Hall, Rehm Library Assistant chaplain Sam Lovett will preach at the student-led Inter-Denominational Service of Praise and Worship. The new ministry leaders for the academic year will be recognized and commissioned. Societe des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Elegantes Society of Tastemakers and Elegant People Photographs by Héctor Mediavilla Two concurrent exhibitions of photographs will be shown in conjunction with the Holy Cross Conference Rethinking the Afropolitan: The Ethics of Black Atlantic Masculinities on Display, organized by Associate Professors Rosa Carrasquillo and Lorelle Semley of the History Department. The exhibitions are curated by Roger Hankins, director of the Cantor Art Gallery, and include work from New York-based photographer Christopher Lopez s Visualizing the Music of Ismael Rivera series, images that were taken on location in Puerto Rico this past spring and inspired by the music of one of the island s most beloved musicians of the 20th century, Ismael Rivera. Spanish photographer Hector Mediavilla s photographs capture the fascinating world of Congolese men known as Sapeurs, who have since the early part of the 20th century used dress and performance to engage and counter the realities of political and economic hardship in postcolonial Africa.
