May 20, 2016 Editor s Note: The Sheriff s Office Weekly Rap-Up comes out on Friday afternoon If you have a submission, please send it to me and I will be happy to include it. Send it to beckyherrin@keysso.net, or in the courier to Deputy Becky Herrin, Media Relations Division, Headquarters building on Stock Island. This publication can be viewed on line at The Sheriff s Office recently honored the employees of the quarter for the first quarter of 2016 at a ceremony held in Marathon. Left to right, Sheriff Rick Ramsay, Explorer Yanelys Vergara, Detective Barney Sajdak, Records Assistant Rita Hinerman, Detention Deputy Kendrick Wooding and Reserve Deputy Jennifer Ettish. Deputies Garrett Bragg and Kendall Bailey took quick action to assist when someone stopped breathing in Marathon. Using CPR and AED, they saved a man s life during a medical emergency. They were recognized with a Sheriff s Medal at a recent employee awards ceremony. Great job! Deputies Andrew Grimm and Charles Montano saved the life of a suicidal inmate and were awarded the Sheriff s Medal at a recent employee awards ceremony. Well done, gentlemen! Sheriff s Office is looking for sign language interpreters. If you qualify and would be willing to consider volunteering, please contact Lt. Nancy Alvarez or Lt. Charlene Sprinkle-Huff.
Taking time out from Police Memorial activities in Tallahassee, Deputy Shelli Lee met with Fred Tanner, brother of deceased Deputy Robin Tanner. They found her name on the memorial wall and visited her grave site. Deputy Tanner was killed in a traffic accident on duty December 13th A Police memorial ceremony will be held in Key West at Bayview Park on Friday, May 20th at 5:30 p.m. On May 11th members of the agency got together on Big Pine Key to visit with K9 Tracer on her last day; she will be remembered fondly for all the work she did for our agency over the years. Her last handler was Deputy Danielle Malone; our hearts go out to Danielle and Lee. I m sure they miss her very much. The Adversary Squadron, VMC 111 had a bi-annual safety meeting involving ground crew, pilots & support personnel at NAS Boca Chica on May 14th. As usual, the Commanding Officer asked the traffic enforcement unit to give a traffic safety presentation. Sgt. Kevin Mimosa and Deputy John McGee put together a power point involving local traffic safety issues. In addition, in recognition of Sgt Mimosa s impending retirement, the CO presented him with a great print of the Squadron, signed! Purple Heart recipient John Donley presented Captain Don Fanelli and Sgt. Kevin Mimosa with a Distinguished Service Award in appreciation of their dedicated support, protecting Americas Purple Heart Veterans During their Wounded Warrior Bicycle Ride. Weekly Rap Up - Page 2
The Sheriff s Office showed up in force to help out with the PAL 5K in Key West recently. Thanks to everyone who was there to help out this great cause! This great group participated in a two day HIDTA training at headquarters recently. Left to right, Lorraine Perez, Milagros Negron, Patty Perez, Lisette Mendez, Candace Harp, Genii Cockshutt, Yulia Vakhtenko, Lisa Knowles & Jill Cranney- Gage. These students from the TIES (Transition to Independence Employment and Success Program) visited the Sheriff s Office this week with their teacher, Ruth Holland, Key West High School Head Coach, Special Olympics -Monroe County. Here they are pictured with Sheriff Rick Ramsay. Corrections Sgt. Steven Katz is very proud of his daughter, whose team - Florida Atlantic - won the conference USA tournament in Dallas recently. They clinched an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, which starts Friday. This lucky group got an all expenses paid five course dinner for eight at Chef Michaels thanks to a winning fire department raffle ticket purchased by Detective Ron Sylvester. Jr. Explorers Luke Pratt and Michael Anchetta met retiring Judge Reagan Ptomey, who gave them a tour and spoke to them about being a judge and some of the more memorable moments of his career as a judge. These members of Explorer Post 906 have been hard at work creating this flag which will be incorporated in their Color Guard and will be used when they are in attendance at athletic events and other school activities. 5 Lt. Sheagren and his crew of inmate workers gave the Wild Bird Center some assistance today with clearing space for the future relocation of the Bird Center at Crane Point Hammock. Farmer Jeanne Selander, Mo and other animals from the farm visited Plantation Key School for their annual Rainforest Extravaganza this week. We talk a lot about graffiti in the Weekly Rap Up but we don t get to talk much about holding people responsible for it. This past week, Deputy Richard Wang arrested the 36 year old Key West man responsible for this mess on the bridge off of Loop Road on Sugarloaf Key. Way to go Deputy Wang! This is Marilee. She saw Deputy Caridad Calloway picking up trash on the Long Key Bridge and stopped to help. She said, there is too much garbage for you to do this alone. Deputy Calloway says it is small things like this that make her love her job. Ella was a little nervous, but fascinated with Deputy John McGee s motorcycle on Stock Island this week. Perhaps she will one day take up the reins of motorcycle deputy with the Sheriff s Office! Go Ella! In coordination with Global Cleanup Day, there will be a cleanup of Card Sound Road, between the county line and the toll booth. The date of the cleanup is this Sunday, May 22nd at 10 a.m. We welcome members of the public who would like to help out! Meet at Alabama Jack s just prior to starting time. Weekly Rap Up - Page 5
A great crew of people turned out Saturday to help clean out the bushes along College Road on Stock Island. It was amazing what they pulled out of the mangroves in just a couple of hours! In the Lower Keys, deputies keep fighting the good fight against trash and dumping...clockwise from the top left, Deputy Vicki Fleck and Sgt. Linda Mixon picked up trash around Cow Key Bridge; Deputy Boyd Williams discovered residents of a Stock Island trailer park were using debris to save parking spots on the street during the day and then piling the stuff on the sidewalks at night; he put a stop to the practice. Deputy Matt Dowling swept up broken glass on 5th Avenue, Stock Island; Deputy Donald Stullken dug these barrels out of the weeds on Long Key Beach Road; and Deputy Freddy Rodriguez made arrangements to have a dumped mattress removed from 5th Avenue on Stock Island. Weekly Rap Up - Page 6
This piece of property belongs to the county and it has been used by someone who has been storing cars and repairing them for quite some time. District Seven is working with Code Compliance to take care of the issue. There are 57 cars and trucks, along with auto parts, tires and several boats on the property. Animal control also responded because of a dog and some caged chickens found there. The person responsible for the mess is being compliant and assisting with the clean up of the mess. Stanley Switlik School in Marathon had their Truck Day and many members of the Sheriff s Office were there, including the Bomb Squad, Dive Team, Traffic Enforcement, Marine Unit, SWAT team and representatives of Criminal Investigations and Road Patrol.
