1 SONS OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS-MECHANIZED CAVALRY April May 2015 Picture 1. April 11, 2015 the National Confederate Memorial Service at Stone Mountain Park Georgia. Hosted by the Georgia Society Military Order of the Stars & Bars and supported by the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV), the SCV Mechanized Cavalry, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Order of the Confederate Rose, Virginia Flaggers, and Southerners from everywhere. Col. Kevin Stone wants to make this event the premier Memorial Service for the Mechanized Cavalry and will be encouraging every Company to support the annual event at Stone Mountain. But since it s location is just north of Atlanta it s usually a short ride from just about anywhere unless you live in Texas or Miami like I do.
2 CONFEDERATE WAR HORSE APRIL - MAY 2015 PAGE 2 Picture 2. This was a group shot at the cemetery next to the hotel that is the resting place for several Confederate soldiers. We held a ceremony for them and Steve Alan Taz Cook played taps. Picture 3. After the ceremony at the cemetery we lined up for our trip to Stone Mountain. Picture 4. The column of Mechanized Cavalry to Stone Mountain contained 68 motorcycles from all over the South.
3 CONFEDERATE WAR HORSE APRIL - MAY 2015 PAGE 3 Picture 5. The column stopped at the Stone Mountain Park entrance and we presented our entrance papers for free admission. Usually, it would cost $10.00 for each bike or car but the Georgia SCV Division arranged that anyone attending the Confederate Memorial Service would be admitted without charge. Picture 6. Before the ceremony began gun crews were coordinated by the event coordinator for canons. He s the gentleman in the circle with the Confederate Battle Flag over his right shoulder and facing the camera.
4 CONFEDERATE WAR HORSE APRIL - MAY 2015 PAGE 4 Picture 7. The welcome words were presented by O. David Denard, DCS Commander Georgia Society Military Order of the Stars & Bars Picture 8. The Invocation was delivered by William Winn, Chaplain of Major William E. Simmons Camp 96.

The color guard was brought in and the pledge to the United States Flag, pledge to the Georgia State Flag, and the salute to the Confederate Flag was given by Col. Rick Daniel. Picture 10. Suzanne Sammons presented greetings as the president of the Atlanta Chapter #18 United Daughters of the Confederacy. Picture 11. 7 CONFEDERATE WAR HORSE APRIL - MAY 2015 PAGE 7 Picture 14. Col. Robert Powers, Commandant Old Guard of the Gate City Guard. The Old Guard Battalion of the Gate City Guard traces heritage back to 1854 when a group of private citizens of Atlanta met to form a private militia for the sole purpose of assisting the City of Atlanta to keep law and order. The organization was chartered in 1857 as The Gate City Guard of Atlanta Georgia. One of the founding members was William L. Ezzard, the Mayor of Atlanta. When armed conflict broke out between the Confederate States and the Union States, the Gate City Guard was one of the first units to respond to President Davis's request for troops. At the end of the war, with the South being disarmed, the Gate City Guard was disbanded. At the end of reconstruction, private militias again began to spring up. Under Governor William J. Northern, the Georgia Legislature placed all private militias under the control of the Governor, thus began what is known today as the Georgia National Guard. Picture 15. The main speaker was Michael K. Shaffer, Historian, Newspaper Columnist and Author. Picture 16. The director of canon fire barks out his orders to the two batteries.
8 CONFEDERATE WAR HORSE APRIL - MAY 2015 PAGE 8 Picture 17. The batteries of canon explode with noise and smoke. I think there were five artillery pieces on the left and four on the right. Picture 18. (below) The right battery fired at two second intervals from the left. The singing of Dixie closed out the ceremony for the day.
9 CONFEDERATE WAR HORSE APRIL - MAY 2015 PAGE 9 Picture 19. There were more than eighty members of the SCV Mechanized Cavalry present at the Memorial Ceremony at Stone Mountain, not all were able to ride their bikes but the ones that could, did. 20 Picture 20 & 21. Philip Cody Duskin was sworn in to the Sons of Confederate Veterans Mechanized Cavalry as the 2,226 member by Col. Kevin Stone. 21

15 CONFEDERATE WAR HORSE APRIL - MAY 2015 PAGE 15 Colonel Kevin Stone, SCV Mechanized Cavalry Commanding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
