4 Pelican Adventure By Sgt. Linda Micki Simonet I try to start shift briefing with a little bit of humor by telling a short funny story, a dumb criminal joke, a cop joke or just plain, old-fashioned good news. It helps to start the day on a high note and seems to set the tone for the rest of the day. A while ago, I told my shift about a pelican that landed in my neighbor's front yard. It became disoriented and walked around the side of her house looking for a way out and got boxed in by the gate. I heard her yelling for help and saw several neighbors running to assist her. When I arrived, I saw a young pelican. It was snapping it's huge, hooked beak which made a very audible, scary clapping noise and did a very good job at keeping everyone at bay. I told one of the neighbors Border Patrol Open House May 28, 2009 marks the 85th Anniversary of the United States Border Patrol. You are cordially invited to celebrate our birthday and attend an open house. Business casual, law enforcement and military personnel uniform of the day. HONOR FIRST, Thursday, May 28th 2009, 11:00am 2:00pm at the MARATHON BORDER PATROL STATION, 3770 Overseas Hwy, Ste.100. RSVP, if you may so that we can plan accordingly. Call Ms. Rachel Shelar, or rachel.shelar@dhs.gov to hold it's beak and swoop it up by it's body. Terrified, the big, burly guy said, "I ain't touching that bird, it'll take my eye out! I thought to myself, "I watch the crocodile guy...i've seen him do this a ga-zillion times. How hard can it be? I So, I bladed my body and, using a step/slide I vaguely remember from Defensive Tactics, I secured Big Bird's beak, swooped him up and tucked him under my arm. (Come to think of it, it was more like carrying a bag pipe I've seen Mitch Snider playing...) After a short struggle, the bird calmed down. I carried it to the shallow salt water pool by H.O.B school and into the drink he went where he gladly swam off. Some of my officers looked at me like I was crazy and I have been told I can make up some funny stories, but really, my imagination Now Available for Rent 1 Bedroom 1 Bathroom 504 Simonton Street $1, per month 315 William St Up $1, per month Inc Utilities 2 Bedroom 1 Bathroom 2400 Fogarty Avenue $1, per month Santa Clara #208 $1, per month isn't that vivid, and I am a terrible liar. I didn't realize someone in the gathering crowd had a camera, until I recently received this picture of me and Big Bird. In my defense, proof is offered up that I do not have an over-active imagination and Big Bird really does exist. 2 Bedroom 2 Bathroom 208 Olivia St $1, per month 3675 Seaside Dr #332 $1, per month 1314 William Street $2, per month For More Information or An Appointment Call Jaime Caballero Property Manager/Broker
5 Money Saving Ideas Paid Off Detention Deputy Lenny Alonzo recently submitted several ideas for saving money within our agency. He is to be commended for his dedication, and for the care he shows in keeping an eye out for opportunities to save the taxpayer s money. Two of his suggestions warranted a cash payment for the money they will save for the agency: He noticed water was being wasted in the Detention Center s dorms as inmates would continually run water to obtain hot water for their canteen coffee and soup. He suggested removing the sink entirely, or installing some sort of device to stop the water from running non-stop. As a result of that suggestion, we will be installing a faucet which will have an automatic cut off so we will no longer be wasting gallons of water down the drain. For this suggestion, he was awarded $ On another occasion, the medical department needed an x-ray processor which would have cost over $3, to purchase. Instead, Lenny built a processor which by all accounts works better than a new one would have. For this money saving idea, he was awarded $ On May 15th, a group of friends got together at Chico s Restaurant to wish Sheri Cuervo the very best with her new marriage. She is getting married June 20th to Todd Harris of Brooksville, Florida.
Congratulations to Victim Advocate of the Year
