1 July 1, 2016 Editor s Note: The Sheriff s Office Weekly Rap-Up comes out on Friday afternoon If you have a submission, please send it to me and I will be happy to include it. Send it to beckyherrin@keysso.net, or in the courier to Deputy Becky Herrin, Media Relations Division, Headquarters building on Stock Island. This publication can be viewed on line at Thank you By now you have probably heard that I have been re-elected without opposition. This is in large part and thanks to you all here at MCSO. You are a credit to our community and the citizens, who, for the most part love and respect you and MCSO. Our community policing efforts have been very positive and appreciated by our citizens. No opposition shows us that the citizens are happy with Thanks for helping Special Olympics By Ruth Holland, head coach We would like to thank three officers for their service at our Area 11 SUP Games on June 25 at Marker 88 in Islamorada. Athletes from all three geographical areas of the Florida Keys competed in SUP races with athletes from Miami Dade in order to qualify for their spot in the lottery draw to go to State Games on August 27 in Sarasota at Nathan Benderson Park. Karl Markowski, one of our SUP coaches, not only comes out every Wed. to coach the Key West Conchs, he also assisted with the torch during the opening ceremonies for the competition. us, our service and what we are doing as an overall. I believe that my first term as Sheriff has been a success and I am successful because of our team concept, as they say there is no I in TEAM I am proud to be on the team with you all and am proud to be part of MCSO. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication during my first term. Sheriff Rick Ramsay Coach Karl was truly a Guardian of the Flame as he paddled the board that carried the torch into the race arena, in full uniform, with an athlete from the Marathon Dolphins SUP team who was holding the torch. Capt. Corey Bryan was present all day in uniform to assist athletes at the finish line and congratulate them. He stayed with us the entire day and assisted in handing out the awards, as is the tradition for Law Enforcement at all Special Olympics competitions statewide. Continued on page 2
2 Special Olympics thanks, continued Captain Lee Ann Holroyd also assisted the event by supporting her son Mathew Dalton to come in first place in his division for the Level 2 SUP Race about 2 miles! Lee Ann and her family helped in preparing the games and were present all day to assist wherever needed. We are grateful that our county program has such awesome support from the Monroe County Sheriffs Office. Special Olympics Florida Monroe County is growing to encompass all areas of the Florida Keys. Having the tradition of Law Enforcement present at the opening ceremonies and awards is very important to our athletes. Please see attached photos of officers and Mat. Our next event in Aug. 20 at Founders Park Area 11 Swim Games on Aug. 20 our Monroe athletes will be competing with Miami Dade athletes. This is a much larger event then the SUP event and many hands will be needed. We will send more details for you to send out to all officers who may want to be involved. The Sheriff s Office donates money to help with the Success through empowerment program (STEP) started by the Reverent Antonia Magwood, Pastor of the Bethel AME Church. The program is aimed at helping at risk youth to stay out of trouble. Sgt. Fricke, Deputy Guerra, Sgt. Ward, and Sgt. Whiteman working the powerboat races in Marathon this past Sunday. In the picture with the students is Director Moore and Sheriff Rick Ramsay. Members from Internal Affairs, along with Mathew Holroyd, took a trip to the farm this week. 4 Islamorada members turned out for their quarterly Adopt a Highway cleanup. Traffic Deputy Jason Keith found all this trash, strewn over about 100 yards on Card Sound Road. He said the most painful part about picking up the trash was that he had to put it in his charger to take it to the dumpster. :) Part two of the cleanup just north of the Seven Mile Bridge in Marathon. This hard working bunch from Sgt. Marc Maison s squad initially removed 4,100 pounds of trash from the area, then returned for all of this remaining stuff, which weighed approximately 2,100 pounds. Great job! Weekly Rap Up - Page 4
5 Farmer Jeanne Selander visited with people at the tropical fruit fiesta on Big Pine Key this past weekend. 6 At the top, Deputy David Lariz has been busy this week. He partnered with Public Works to clean up the area of 5th Street and 3rd Avenue on Stock Island. This area is known as a hangout area for narcotics sales. On the right, he also worked with community member and former MCSO employee Ira Goldstein to tackle piles of trash on Sunshine Street on Stock Island. Waste Management was also a partner in this effort. Deputy Dyllon Hansen and Austin Hopp paint over graffiti on the back of ice machines at the Sunshine Key Chevron.
