1 Flight Captain: Joe Fitzpatrick Vice Flt. Capt: Bob Norman Adjutant: Walt Dietrich Treasurer: Chris Goff Provost Marshall: Dave Devendorf CFIP: Steve Borden Flight Captain s Corner First, I want to thank Walt Dietrich for stepping in for me and leading our May meeting. We ll just add another duty title to Walt s already full resume! I m still looking for someone to replace Walt in August, there has to be someone in the flight who will want to take this job on. I understand I missed a great speaker, Jeff Epps, talking about 3D printing, it appears it is the wave of the future. I don t normally go into what s been going on in my life, but since I was gone over 5 weeks living out of a suitcase here s what I ve been up to. I was on the hook to help our daughter and son-in-law out who lives in Bangkok as their adoption proceeded along. My daughter got the call that an expecting mother selected them as the new parents. The mother was from the Marshall Islands and the birth was taking place in Honolulu. So, we started to adjust our plans, we were going to the Napa Valley for our 40 th wedding anniversary, but instead we celebrated via FaceTime. I started out in Omaha for our granddaughter s First Communion, we stayed for a weekend then I flew off to Bangkok to watch our 4 grandsons while Sandy flew home. I stayed in Bangkok about 18 days and left about 24 hours before our daughter returned with our newest grandchild. I flew into St Louis and spent few days with Sandy where she was at a Quilt Trade Show. I then flew off to Denver to retire a former C-130 loadmaster of mine when I was the 41 st Airlift Squadron Commander. What was neat about this, I actually commissioned this loadmaster as a 2 Lt while I was at Air War College back in 94, so this was unique experience for both of us, I got to retire her as a Lt Colonel. Unfortunately, while in Denver, I received word that Sandy s Mom passed away just shy of 90 years old. So, I flew from Denver to Little Rock to meet Sandy and following the funeral we drove home together. I had agreed to volunteer at the USGA 4-Ball Championship at Pinehurst, but my schedule was so disrupted, I wasn t able to do any of my shifts. But hopefully, I m still on their good list and can volunteer at a future local area USGA event. My May was hectic. I was sad to learn of Sam Sayers passing; later in this newsletter I ll add some information and a picture of Sam at our 40 th anniversary. After talking about all my recent travels, I ll be out of town again for our June meeting with Sandy at another Quilt show in Vermont. But everyone should look forward hearing from one of our own, Colonel Kelly Holbert who will give us an update on Pope and the Green Ramp activities. Don t forget we don t meet in July, so I won't be with you till August, our August speaker is Joe Dittmar a WTC survivor, please bring your spouse or significant other. Volabamus Volamus Joe Did you make your meeting RSVP? Get your reservations in by June 18, Sunday evening, holding all last-minute changes to exceptional circumstances.

NOTE: Remember the cost to cover the meal, initial wine setup, raffle, and meals of guest speaker is now $35. Please try to bring correct amount of cash or a check. Make the check out to "Harley H. Pope Flight". DRESS: Business Causal or Uniform of the Day- Flight Suits welcomed Drinks will be available (pay as you go) at the main bar. A mini-bar will set up in the meeting room when spouse or significant other is invited as guests to attend the meeting Sit down with salads and initial wine setup of one bottle of red and one half-bottle of white wine at each table. Additional wine can be delivered to your table on a pay-as-you-go basis Entree' Adjutant Report May Meeting Flight attendance of 24 was an outstanding showing, with a total of 21 members and 3 guests. Jeff Epps our guest speaker gave a great presentation regarding current technology training and emersion education to prepare our future workforce. Although 3-D printing has been around since the 80's, it is just now being used more and more by industry which should bring back manufacturing to the U.S. The 3-D printing hub he is starting at Grays Creek High School to teach design, scanning and printing using various materials will hopefully help Cumberland County students be marketable for future jobs in this new industrial revolution. A sad occasion occurred on May 28. One of our fellow Daedalians made his last Flight on Sunday afternoon May 28. We will miss Capt (ret) Sam Sayers, USN. He was a former A-6 Intruder pilot during Vietnam. We will miss his many stories. Membership is done mostly online now using the website: Respectfully submitted, Walt Dietrich Adjutant

3 50/50 Drawing NOTAMS Mike Reid won the raffle. He won $ and the total collected was $ Daedalian Flight Training Scholarship (DFT) Steve Borden, project officer for DFT, gave a status update on our candidates. Applications for matching funds have been submitted to National for both candidates. He received word from The National POC, Col. (ret) Ed Sheeran that they have been approved. Steve ed both Cadets to determine their schedule preferences so that a solid flight training schedule with the Flight Center could be constructed. Currently Steve is planning for Cadet Mack Roberson to begin his flight training during the week of 12 June. Steve heard back from Cadet Pieter Enkema and based upon his summer schedule he will begin his flight training the week of 17 July. Also, he asked each Cadet for their jacket size and nametag info so we can get them ordered through National. Programs June Col. Kelly Holbert, 43AMOG/CC July No Meeting Aug Joe Dittmar, survivor of Twin Towers Sep Joe Stiles, F-4 pilot from Seymour Oct Army/Navy ROTC scholarships Nov TBD In Memoriam The flight received this notice from Bob Humphries: It is indeed with a heavy heart that I report that Capt. Sam Sayers, USN Retired, passed away. I do remember Sam's stories of flying the A-6 Intruder in Vietnam. We have lost a hero and friend. We shall miss him. I was informed that Mary is doing well, all things considered. Sam has had some health concerns over the past few months. But, today Sam and Mary had some grandchildren visiting and they lunched at Panera. After coming home, things deteriorated, rapidly. Of course, I know nothing about services, but will forward when I learn more. Please forward this news as you see fit. May God keep us all in his care, Bob Humphrey

4 Bob attended the same church as Sam and Peyton Cook had Sam as a golf partner. Sam took his last flight on Sunday, May 28.
