1 UPDATE 2 EDITION 48 JUNE 13 STAFF NEWSLETTER RCN Awards winners Four nurses have scooped prizes at this year s Royal College of Nursing Nurse of the Year Awards. The awards are aimed at nurses and midwives who have succeeded in raising standards of care for their patients and clients. Julie McConville, Head of Health Visiting and School Nursing, won the Team Manager Award. She was described as a truly inspirational and transformational leader who articulates vision, conviction and compassion. The judges commended Julie on her calm and pragmatic approach, her focus on solutions, and the brilliant example she sets in supporting staff. Stroke Specialist Nurse Hilary Thompson won the Transforming Care with Technology Award. Hilary incorporates remote telemonitoring into her practice to measure, monitor and manage stroke patients. Her nominator said that through telemonitoring Hilary can optimise her time, more effectively manage her workload, and make better informed decisions based on timely and relevant clinical information. 2 Trust at a Glance Boston delegation visits Craigavon Cardiology staff UPDATE 2 STAFF NEWSLETTER MS Nurses put patients on right course Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Nurses Heidi Thompson and Jill Patton pictured with newly diagnosed MS patients and their families attending a 4 week course in Craigavon for information, advice and practical support. There are over 900 people with MS in the Southern Trust Area. A business delegation from Boston, USA visited Craigavon Area Hospital to meet some staff from the Cardiology Department and to watch a live stent operation. The delegation was interested in the cardio expertise in the hospital and potential areas of industry collaboration. Tuning in Pain Concern UK, recently recorded a radio programme with staff (pictured) from Craigavon Hospital s Pain Clinic. Craigavon was selected for the programme, as an example of best practice, following a recommendation by The Pain Alliance of Northern Ireland. Each year, approximately 1,700 people are referred to Pain Clinics in the Trust. Speed Networking The Trust held a Speed Networking event in partnership with Macmillan and other voluntary partners to give an overview of the cancer services and support available to those affected by cancer and their carers. 3 Edition 48 June 13 Surgical event Sean Patton, Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon at Craigavon Area Hospital (pictured) was one of the organisers of a special Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) event. Trainee and consultant surgeons from the Trust also attended this event. Trust at a Glance Red Nose Day fundraiser at Bannvale SEC Around 70 service users and 30 staff at Bannvale Social Education Centre in Gilford hosted a fancy dress / silly dress day and disco to raise 110 for Comic Relief. South Tyrone gets a makeover Refurbishment work to upgrade the external façade of the main tower block at South Tyrone Hospital began recently. The work, part of a 2.9 million investment, is scheduled to continue for 20 months and includes new windows, replacement of the exterior facade with modern cladding and essential structural repairs. During Dying Matters Awareness week in May, staff visited a number of venues to promote the campaign Be ready for it, aimed at encouraging members of the public to take fi ve simple steps to make their end of life experience better, both for them and for their loved ones. The fi ve steps are: Make a will; Record your funeral wishes; Plan your future care and support; Register as an organ donor; and Tell your loved ones your wishes. 4 Success & Achievements RCN Finalists Majella Connelly, Infant Mental Health Practitioner with the i-camhs project, was runner-up in the Bamford Vision Award at the RCN event. In the Nurse of the Year Award category, Fracture Liaison Nurse Practitioner Karen McCoy was highly commended. Congratulations to Julie, Hilary, Majella and Karen. UPDATE 2 STAFF NEWSLETTER Craigavon and Daisy Hill named among best UK hospitals Majella Connolly, runner-up in the Bamford Vision Award, with Dr Maura Briscoe, DHSSPS, and Janice Smyth, RCN Director Southern Trust hospitals have been recognised among the 40 Top Hospitals for 2013 in the UK for the second consecutive year. The CHKS 40 Top Awards are based on the evaluation of 22 indicators covering safety, clinical effectiveness, health outcomes, effi ciency, patient experience and quality of care. Congratulating staff on receiving the award, Chief Executive, Mairead McAlinden said: Every member of staff working in our hospitals from clinical, management and support services - has played an important role in achieving the award and every one should take pride in this honour. Karen McCoy (centre) with Dr Peter Carter, RCN, and Margaret Meehan, Vice-Chair, RCN Northern Ireland Board Trainee anaesthetist wins prestigious award Trainee anaesthetist, Dr Andrew Eggleton, is congratulated on his Dundee Medal win by Dr William Campbell President of the Northern Ireland Society of Anaesthetists, after presenting his audit project at Malone House in March. Dr Andrew Eggleton s winning audit of inadvertent perioperative hypothermia was carried out at Craigavon Hospital in late 2012 early 2013 and was co-authored by Trust consultant anaesthetist Dr Jeffrey Brown and Dr Stephen Mulvany. Congratulations and appreciation is extended as well to Nurse Julie O Hagan and her colleagues in the CAH Orthopaedic theatre suite. 4
5 Edition 48 June 13 Success & Achievements Professional Champion Award Children s Epilepsy Nurse Specialists Margaret Meehan and Rosie Prunty have won a Professional Champion Award from charity Young Epilepsy. The judges commended their amazing programme of training activities to raise awareness about epilepsy amongst school staff which has made a real difference to hundreds of children and professionals in the area. Rosie and Margaret with (standing) Bernie McGibbon, Acting Head of Service for Paediatrics; Grace Hamilton, Head of Acute Paediatric Services; and Julianne Lee, Lead Nurse, Community Children s Nursing Team Learning Disability Training Around 60 staff from Longstone Hospital and the Intensive Domiciliary Support Team completed training to support 25 tenants resettling to community accommodation in Dungannon this summer. Recognition Event for Volunteers During Volunteers week in June, the Trust held a Recognition event for over 80 volunteers. Roberta Brownlee, Chair, paid tribute to the individual contribution that each of the volunteers makes. A gift and certifi cate was presented to each of the volunteers. Gerard Rocks, Assistant Director for Promoting Wellbeing (Acting), thanked the volunteers for their dedication and paid tribute to the Volunteer Coordinators and their managers for their hard work and dedication in shaping the Volunteer Service and the part they play in making the service so successful. 6 Meet the Trust s Family Nurse Partnership Team Who is in the team? Five Family Nurses; Olivia Delaney, Roisin Neill, May Anderson, Deirdre O Neill, Tracy Wilson and Team Supervisor Mairead Donnelly. UPDATE 2 STAFF NEWSLETTER Role of Team To support young (aged 19 and under) fi rst time mums and their families through a nurse-led home visiting programme from early pregnancy until the child s second birthday. Achievements With referrals coming from a variety of sources including teenage expectant mothers themselves, we now have 45 mums recruited to the programme. Our fi rst birth was on the 14 February, since then there has been another 15 babies and we are delighted that all mums and babies are thriving. Challenges Teenage pregnancy can be a challenging issue to deal with and our nurses are coming into the lives of these families at what can be an emotional time. However we are fi nding families are very receptive to the programme and are engaging well with nurses. How the Team is making a difference to patients and clients This evidence based programme helps to improve health, wellbeing and self suffi ciency of fi rst time young parents and their children and is proven most effective for young parents who face social challenges. Benefi ts of the programme include: reduction in smoking Good Nutrition The fi rst ever National Nutrition Day aimed to raise awareness of the role that all health and social care staff have in preventing malnutrition related illnesses. Through the Nursing Care Standards for Food in Hospitals, we now have protected meal times in wards and red placemats for patients who need feeding assistance. We also greatly value the support of our volunteers who assist patients. Speaking at the event, Angela McVeigh, Director of Older People and Primary Care said: Talking about dying, death and bereavement is in everyone s interests as it can help ensure that all of us can get the care and support we want, and where we want it at the end of our lives. 7 Edition 48 June 13 Meet Gerard Gerard Hughes, key advocate for the Cycle to Work scheme in which 160 staff members participate. What is your role in the Trust? I m a porter, security offi cer and receptionist / telephonist at Daisy Hill Hospital. I m also a member of the Daisy Hill Hospital Health and Wellbeing Group for Support Services staff which meets four times a year. As part of the Group, I co-ordinated sessions for staff to attend the Man Van when it visited the Hospital. What is the biggest challenge in your job? I m part of a team supporting clinical and administrative healthcare staff and working in a busy environment is a challenge. I cycle two miles to work and another miles between April and November which helps my work-life balance. I like undertaking new challenges and hope to complete Cycle Leader Training and help organise a Spinathon for Southern Area Hospice Services this year. What gives you the most job satisfaction? Having a job in today s economic climate and doing the best that I can every day. I took up cycling and then gave up smoking. I encourage others to give up smoking. I helped raise money for testicular and prostate cancers as part of the Movember campaign last year. Get to know your colleague in 30 seconds! Favourite Hobby? Cycling Favourite Music/Song? Rebecca Semple began a six months placement in September 2012 with the Craigavon Area Hospital Payroll Team and works with Payroll Team Manager Oonagh Gannon and Acting Payroll Manager John Ellison. Rebecca said: Having recently completed a Business Studies degree this voluntary placement 2 days a week gives me great work experience. I support the team by updating employee records on the computer system inputting sick certifi cates, answering the telephone and fi ling. I m really enjoying my time in the Payroll Team. 8 Arts Care Show Case Over 150 service users and staff came together to celebrate the achievements and share the benefi ts of Arts Care in the Trust.
