Patients did not attend 13,500 outpatient appointments at Craigavon Area Hospital last year; potentially wasting 1.3 million of staff time and resources. There was a total of 13,545 day case procedures delivered in 2010/11; an increase of 4,000 from 5 years ago. There are 434 Inpatient beds in the Hospital a decrease of 45 since 2010.The number of Day beds has increased by 12 during the same period. There were 10,934 inpatient attendances in 2010/11 a decrease of 2,573 from 5 years ago. Trust Hospitals have some of the lowest Health Care Acquired Infection levels in the entire UK; the lowest MSSA rate within Northern Ireland for 2010/11 and C diff rate is the lowest not only in N.I. but also lower than all comparable sized hospitals in England for 2010.* Craigavon Area and Daisy Hill Hospitals are two of seven acute hospitals in Northern Ireland that have been designated Queen s University teaching hospitals. * per 10,000 admissions for large acute hospitals.

5 Recent Investment and Modernisation Craigavon Area Hospital New Fracture Services In only two years ( ), a local Trauma and Orthopaedics service was built from scratch at Craigavon Area Hospital. Previously people from the Southern area would have had to travel to Belfast for this service, and there were long waiting times. In total, 15.2 million was invested in local trauma and orthopaedic services at Craigavon Area Hospital in recent years. Maternity and Neo-Natal Units Upgrade The 4 million extension and refurbishment project for the maternity and neonatal units at Craigavon Area Hospital was completed in Spring The upgrade to the neonatal unit included: the provision of patients/relatives accommodation; additional support accommodation; upgrade Clinical Assessment facility; new baby changing facility, new breast-feeding room; new signage; improved security to the unit; and new flooring/ lighting to the neonatal corridor. The provision of a single isolation room and upgrade of 3 existing cots spaces As well 4 new delivery rooms, the maternity unit was improved by upgraded bathroom and toilet facilities, improvements to existing delivery rooms, a separate area for induction of labour and an enhanced recovery area. In 2009 a new theatre, Theatre 5, was opened at a cost of 2 million. Further improvements were achieved when the two theatres which had been temporarily used to provide the trauma and orthopaedic services were refurbished in May 2011, and used to replace the old theatres 3 and 4.

6 Future Developments At Craigavon Area Hospital New Theatres Project The project to upgrade the main theatre accommodation in Craigavon Area Hospital began in October This major development for Craigavon is the latest in a number of theatre developments, and is the largest single investment on site since the opening of the Trauma and Orthopaedics Unit in This new scheme will be carried out in a number of phases and will deliver a further two theatres to replace theatres 1 and 2, a 22 bed recovery ward incorporating 3 segregation rooms and pre-op/day surgery recovery beds, staff changing, storage and other support accommodation. A fallow area to accommodate an additional theatre will also form part of the scheme. Phase 1 of the scheme will involve construction of a new build theatre (theatre 2) and a new corridor leading from the modular theatres to CSSD. Phase 1A will begin at the end of November and will then run concurrently with Phase 1. It consists of the refurbishment of old theatre 3 and theatre 4 to provide a new theatre, (theatre 1). It is expected that both phases will be completed by the end of October Bluestone Unit extension The business case for the Centralisation of Acute Mental Health Services (Bluestone Unit extension) project has been approved by the Minister- securing a capital investment of 5 million. The Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) will move from St Luke s Hospital to the Bluestone Unit at Craigavon Area Hospital. The Trust plans to move Assessment and Treatment Unit beds from Longstone Hospital to Craigavon. Changing for Children - Paediatric Ambulatory and Unscheduled Services The Trust consulted in 2010 on plans to modernise acute paediatric care which include providing ambulatory services at CAH that will support GPs in accessing specialist opinion with the aim of avoiding hospital admission where appropriate. Inpatient services at Craigavon will also be extended to enable adolescents up to the age of 16 to be cared for in an appropriate environment. These changes require investment in accommodation and a business case will be submitted for a dedicated paediatric unit during 2012.

7 Urology A regional review of (Adult) Urology Services recommended a 3 urology centre model for the region. The service at the Southern Trust is to be expanded with the number of consultant urologists increasing from the present 3 to 5. Team South will be based at Craigavon Hospital and will treat patients from the southern area and also the lower third of the western area (Fermanagh). The total catchment population will be approximately 410, million will be invested in this service development. Bowel cancer screening Bowel cancer screening is to commence at Craigavon Area Hospital from January 2012 with this service being provided in the medium term from a newly refurbished endoscopy unit at South Tyrone hospital. Acute Accommodation Project Refurbishment work starts in early 2012 to move Outpatient services at Craigavon Area Hospital to a new location external to the main Hospital building (Ward 1, Ramone Building). This will provide room for additional consulting rooms and a better work and patient flow which will improve the overall patient experience. Phase 2 of the project will provide a new outpatient fracture clinic area within the vacated outpatient department at Craigavon Area Hospital and will include an X-Ray room, three plaster stations, consultant and associated fracture staff examination rooms and offices. It will also have a reception area and associated waiting areas. Work on both Phases is due to be completed by mid-2012.
