1 Southern Trust staff commended for excellence The Trust held its fourth Excellence Awards event on 05 December to celebrate and recognise the commitment, innovation and achievements of staff and volunteers. There were 9 award categories:- Raising Standards, Best Care Best Value, Working Together, Behind the Scenes, Anything s Possible, Views into Action, People s Choice, Lifetime Achievement and Community Service. The Overall Winner From left to right: Roberta Brownlee, Chair; Trudy Reid, Head of General and Oral Surgery; Edwin Poots, Minister of Health; Mary Burke, General Manager Medicine and Unscheduled Care; Mairead McAlinden, Chief Executive and Elizabeth Mahood, Non Executive Director and Chair of the Excellence Awards Group. The High Dependency Unit Implementation Group led by Dr Charlie McAllister and Dr Shane Moan scooped the top award for their entry in the Anything s Possible Award for Excellence in Service Creativity and Innovation. The team were the first in the UK to use the Telepresence robot which enables Intensive Care specialists from Craigavon to remotely assess patients in Daisy Hill Hospital. The robot allows real-time patient observation, examination and interaction between staff in different locations. It has the ability to transmit heart and breath sounds and can sometimes prevent the need to transfer patients to Intensive Care.
2 Joint Runners Up From left to right: Mairead McAlinden, Chief Executive; Maria Tynan, Former Home Enteral Tube Feeding Coordinator; Rachel Wright, Home Tube Feeding Coordinator; Ashleigh Nelson, Home Tube Feeding Coordinator; Edwin Poots, Minister of Health; Geraldine Caldwell, Head of Intermediate Care Services and Stroke Care; Elizabeth Mahood, Non Executive Director and Chair of the Excellence Awards Group and Roberta Brownlee, Chair. Ashleigh Nelson and Rachel Wright, Home Enteral Tube Feeding Coordinators were joint runners up having been finalists in the Raising Standards Award for Excellence in Patient/Client Safety and Quality of Care. The Southern Trust is the first in Northern Ireland to provide a dedicated home tube feeding service. Ashleigh Nelson and Rachel Wright, Home Tube Feeding Coordinators provide support to over 100 adults living in the Southern Trust area who are being tube fed at home. Tube feeding is a treatment used to feed people artificially via a tube through the nose into the stomach or directly into the stomach or bowel. People needing these treatments usually have lost their ability to swallow or may need nutritional support due to underlying medical or surgical conditions. Geraldine Caldwell was announced as joint runner up at the event, having been nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Individual. Geraldine is well-known throughout the Trust having worked here for 31 years. She was nominated for her tireless dedication and commitment to achieving best quality for service users, their families and carers, ensuring that the needs of clients and carers are at the forefront of any change. In 2009, Geraldine took over the role of Head of Service for Non-Acute Hospitals along with her existing role as Head of Intermediate Care Services and Stroke Care. Through the role, she is always striving for excellence and will look regionally and nationally for examples of good practice in order to implement these into the services she manages. 2
3 Health Minister congratulates winners Mr Liam Creagh, Freelance TV Reporter, Redbox Media, acted as Master of Ceremonies for the event and delighted in showcasing a DVD of the finalists in each category, before asking them to join him on stage for the announcement of the winner. Health Minister, Edwin Poots presented each of the finalists with their award and congratulated all of the staff and volunteers from the Southern Trust, stating: RAISING STANDARDS: Award for Excellence in Patient / Client Safety and Quality of Care I would like to congratulate everyone nominated. Your dedication and commitment to building a health and social care system that improves the quality of care; ensures better outcomes for patients and clients; and enhances the experience of health and social care for everyone is inspirational and I welcome these excellence awards to justly recognise your efforts. Also speaking at the event, Trust Chair Roberta Brownlee said: This is the fourth year of our Excellence Awards, and I am delighted that it continues to grow each year. The variety of the 137 nominations this year reflects the diversity of our Trust, and the range of care and support we provide each year. We launched the Excellence Awards to recognise the exceptional achievements and contributions of individuals, teams and volunteers in their work with service users, their colleagues, our partner agencies and the wider Trust. It is a way to recognise success, but also to share experience through the Trust, to help us learn from each other and to take time to reflect on the last, extremely busy year, when once again you have demonstrated your ability to rise to whatever challenges have come your way. As you will all know, this year has been dominated by Transforming Your Care, the way forward for health and social care in Northern Ireland. I have said all along that we are already transforming your care, and that is reflected in the quality of service and staff commitment to improvement on show today. 7
