For the first time in my life I have something to put on my CV and I am in a placement in the Communications Team which is giving me valuable work experience and getting me ready for employment. Meet Edel Edel Livingstone - Specialist Nurse in Organ Donation trained at the Western Area College of Nursing and Altnagelvin Hospital. I qualified as a General Nurse in My first job was in a Portadown Nursing Home before moving to the Medical Unit at the Downe Hospital, then on to Rheumatology at Musgrave Park. My interest in Critical Care developed from 13 years working in the Intensive Care Units at the Royal Victoria and Craigavon Area hospitals. What is your role in the Trust? I am employed by NHS Blood and Transplant, a Special Health Authority, as the Trust s Specialist Nurse in Organ Donation. It is my role to support the integration of organ donation, where appropriate, into the end of life care choices for patients and their families. What is the biggest challenge in your job? It can be very emotionally challenging. I need to be able to approach families in the middle 7 of their grief to offer the opportunity for organ donation and discuss their loved one s wishes in a sensitive way. It can be very emotionally challenging What gives you the most job satisfaction? It is very humbling to be with people whilst they are suffering such loss and often tragedy. But it is also rewarding to fulfil the wishes of a patient and their bereaved family and improve the quality of life for someone who has been waiting for a transplant through the gift of organ donation.
