7 guest speakers Jean-Paul Bell Described as one of the great Humour-manitarians. He believes that humour helps put life into perspective. It helps us understand the orthodox, tolerate the unpleasant, overcome the unexpected and survive the unbearable. Since creating and co-founding the Humour Foundation and their Clown Doctor Program in 1996, Jean-Paul has been showing the world that laughter is the best medicine. Over the last 18 months he has been involved in a unique project, The SMILE Study, a federally-funded randomised trial with the Dementia Collaborative Research Centre at The University of New South Wales, visiting 18 aged care homes delivering fun and laughter to elderly people suffering with dementia. Dr Andrew Marsden Originally Honours BSc in Zoology (1968) then MBBS from The London Hospital Royal Navy Medical Officer from 1970 to 1982 in General Duties and eventually specialising in occupational medicine. Retired Surgeon Commander. Since that time, Andrew has spent three years working in remote Western Australia beginning a new private general practice in Kununurra before returning to Perth. He has extensive experience in occupational health and safety, as well as running remote medical services. In his spare time, Andrew enjoys sewing and creates unique one-off work shirts and Grandad-designed outfits for his much loved grandchild. He happens to be visiting Brisbane during the conference and we are lucky enough to have him join us. Dr Frank Brennan Dr Frank Brennan is a Sydney physician whose gift is caring for the dying and their families. Frank worked for the Aboriginal Medical Service in Redfern as a paediatrician in South Africa and for the Sacred Heart Hospice before specialising in palliative care. He has worked in Australia and Ireland. He has an interest in all aspects of palliative care including the interface of this discipline with the humanities. Inspired by his time in Ireland and the storytelling tradition there, he began to write narratives of encounters with patients and their families that had moved, challenged or humbled him. In addition, Frank has written on pain management, palliative care and human rights. Dr Kerry Reid Searl Associate Professor and Sub Dean of Simulation at the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Central Queensland University. Kerry also has a Bachelor of Health Science, a Masters of Clinical Education and her PhD. With extensive nursing experience, she remains clinically active. Kerry has been involved in undergraduate nursing education for the past 20 years, and is the recipient of numerous teaching awards. Most recently she has become known nationally and internationally for her pioneering work in creating an innovative simulation strategy termed MASK-ED (KRS Simulation). Published in international journals for her work around medication safety and principal author and co-author, of several nursing texts books which sell both nationally and internationally. Marco Gliori Mark retired as a Queensland Police officer to become a full-time poet, after-dinner speaker and entertainer. A popular poet for all ages who has appeared throughout Australia and in many other countries. Marco s mischievous sense of humour, contemporary Australian images and stories have seen him presented with the Spirit of Waltzing Matilda Award, presented by the late great Slim Dusty on behalf of Radio National Australia, and in recent years, was voted as Australia s Modern Banjo by Australian Women s Weekly. Mark has published seven books and numerous spoken word CD s. He ll have you rolling in the isles and appreciating our unique Australian way.
