5 Conference Chairs Dr Liz Lightbody Liz is a Reader in Health Services Research in the School of Nursing at the University of Central Lancashire and Chair of the National Stroke Nursing Forum (NSNF). She is a nurse by professional background and has been an active researcher for over 20 years. Her research expertise is in applied health research, service improvement and implementation. Her research focus includes acute stroke care (e.g. telemedicine, neurological monitoring, nurse education, oral care, and positioning), psychological adjustment post-stroke (e.g. screening tools, training for stroke service staff and interventions that address the needs of stroke survivors adjusting to life after stroke) and workforce development. She is the project co-ordinator for the Accelerating Delivery of Psychological Therapies after Stroke (ADOPTS) project, which is one of the projects within the Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care North West Coast. Estephanie Dunn Estephanie trained initially as a General Nurse and worked in a range of clinical settings before moving into Nurse Education at the University of Northumbria. She returned to clinical practice as a Lecturer Practitioner in Child Health and moved into General Management as Senior Nurse/Business Manager for Children s Services, then General Manager for a City wide Adult Learning Disability Service. Estephanie worked as a Director of Nursing within a PCT prior to working in interim Director and Project Manager roles across the public and independent sector. She joined the RCN on the 17th March 2010 as Operational Manager for the Northern Region and took up the post of RCN Regional Director for the North West Region on the 22nd August 2014.

6 Conference Speakers Patient Perspective Phil Woodford Sarah Rook Professor Cath Sackley Cath Sackley is Head of Public Health Sciences, Professor of Rehabilitation at the Faculty of Life Science and Medicine at King s College London. She is a physiotherapist with a speciality in the evaluation of complex and behavioural interventions and an inaugural NIHR Senior Investigator. Her research focuses on the problems experienced by stroke survivors, people with TIA and people with Parkinson's disease living in the community. Her team works closely with older people and her work has informed clinical practice, particularly for the residents of care homes. It covers common daily problems such as incontinence, difficulties with mobility and other activities of daily living. The group prioritises research capacity development and Cath has supervised over thirty training awards for AHPs.

7 Conference Speakers Dr Emma Patchwood Emma is a Research Psychologist and has worked in stroke since 2005 at the University of Manchester. Her research experience and interests are around improving long term support services for stroke survivors and their families / informal caregivers; with a particular interested in equity of access for those with cognitive and communication difficulties. Service user collaboration is a core aspect of her work. Emma s major projects in 2018 focus on improving six month post-stroke reviews and improving carer support. Organising Support for Carers of Stroke Survivors (OSCARSS) is a national cluster randomised controlled trial exploring the implementation and effectiveness of an approach to carer needs assessment and support. Emma has recently been awarded a Stroke Association Postdoctoral Fellowship, beginning in 2019, to develop and test a psychological support intervention for life after stroke. Susan Targett Sue Targett qualified as a nurse in She worked as a staff nurse on a general medical ward before having a short break.following this she worked at the local hospice, before returning to medicine. Sue then spent several years progressing her career in Cardiology. An opportunity arose for her to be a ward manager which specialised in Endocrinology, diabetes and geriatric medicine. Opportunities arose in the directorate to take part in a National Improvement Service Programme alongside other dedicated professionals with the support of the trust. A project group embarked on providing 4 dedicated stroke beds on the medical ward. Due to reorganisation this development slowed down. Following her appointment in 2008 as co-ordinator for the newly implemented Community Stroke Team Sue has been part of the Stroke Steering Board, with the commitment from the trust this has enabled developments across the Stroke Pathway in achieving Ssnap A in the recent results.

8 Conference Speakers Dr Paula Beech I graduated from the nursing degree programme at King s College, University of London in Since then I have worked in neuroscience, cardiovascular, spinal injury and research and development settings. I initially focused on stroke nursing in 2000 undertaking varied roles focused on clinical research, secondary prevention, development of rapid access TIA clinics and nurse led follow up clinics. My work in stroke allowed me to complete my MRes (University of Salford) looking at the implementation of TIA clinics. I completed my PhD (University of Manchester) in 2012 with an exploratory study of how information is exchanged post stroke between stroke survivors, their nominated carers and health professionals. Since February 2013 I have been in post as Stroke Nurse Consultant at the Comprehensive Stroke Centre in Salford, Greater Manchester. Dr Louise Connell Dr Louise Connell is a Reader in Rehabilitation at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston, UK. She has been awarded fellowship status by the Association for Chartered Physiotherapists In Neurology for advancing the specialty of neurological physiotherapy. She is a former National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Career Development Fellow. Her interest is in implementation research, and she is undertaking a programme of research into neurological rehabilitation. Her current research focuses specifically on implementation research to increase intensity of rehabilitation after stroke.

9 Conference Speakers Professor Dame Caroline Watkins Professor Dame Caroline Watkins, Faculty of Health and Wellbeing, University of Central Lancashire: Professor of Stroke and Older People s Care, Director of Research and Innovation; Director of Lancashire Clinical Trials Unit and Director of Lancashire research Institute For global health and wellbeing (LIFE). Her multidisciplinary team of researchers have a large portfolio of clinically relevant stroke research and contribute to stroke service development locally, nationally and internationally. Caroline s Services to Nursing and Older People s Care were recognised with the award of the DBE in the New Year Honours She is currently Chair Elect for the UK Stroke Forum and will take position as Chair from January Sheeba Philip Sheeba Philip is currently working at East Lancashire Hospitals Trust as a Nurse Consultant in Stroke. She has over 10 years experience in stroke, but more than 20 years as a nurse. She is very driven with gaining knowledge and skills and this was proved when she completed her MSc in Stroke and gained the clinical excellence award for the Advanced Neurovascular Practitioner Programme (NETSMART- APN) from USA. There are only three things that she gets very passionate about- Stroke talking about God and her family, and there is only one place you will find her on a Sunday morning. Her determination to improve the quality of care given to stroke patients and raising the trust performance is evident in the SSNAP score for ELHT in the last two years. She even plays a key role in the regional stroke strategic developments and believes in growing and improving the service for northwest. Sheeba also enjoys teaching and apart from mentoring the stroke specialist nurses, she is actively involved in various regional stroke training programmes. She is highly regarded by all the regional Stroke Consultants and Interventional Radiologist, for her knowledge and ability to read imaging in stroke. She is currently focused in developing the services at ELHT to bring it to a Hyper Acute Stroke Unit status for the region.

10 Conference Speakers Elaine Whitby I am a nurse with a career-long interest in the spread and implementation of new developments. I have a keen interest in how research and national polices can be translated and used effectively in day-to-day practice to enhance patient care. I ve had a varied career, including Associate Director for Education and Implementation Support at NICE, Deputy and Acting Director of Nursing roles in NHS trusts and have held teaching, research and practice development posts. I am currently Facilitator of Professional Learning & Development for the RCN in the North West and an Advisor for the NICE Fellows and Scholars Programme, coaching and supporting health and social care staff to lead implementation projects. Gillian Cluckie Gill completed her nurse training at Glasgow University followed by an MSc at King s College London. She has worked in stroke care since She completed her PhD in 2014 which investigated patient, carers and clinicians views on communication about thrombolysis treatment. Her current role encompasses the whole patient pathway including thrombectomy, hyper-acute care, inpatient care, research, outpatient stroke clinics and community stroke prevention group. She is the principle investigator for a number of clinical research trials. She is the stroke care group lead for St. George s Hospital. She is a nurse advisor to the London stroke clinical leadership group and leads the London wide stroke nursing competencies project. She is a member of the Intercollegiate Stroke Working Party and peer review project at the Royal College of Physicians. She is an honorary lecturer at University College London

11 Conference Speakers Louise Ward Louise qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1996, and works at East Kent University Foundation Trust. For 18 years she has worked within acute Stroke care, and has a special interest in stroke prevention, patient education, and quality improvement. Louise is currently working as a Strategy and Business Planning Manager. Her role involves supporting the redevelopment of stroke services in East Kent, in response to a countywide reconfiguration of stroke services. Panel Discussion Facilitator Danielle Scapens Danielle Scapens began her career as a news reporter for Reporter and Chronicle Newspapers in Tameside in 2004 before moving to MEN Media in 2006 where she covered health and education well as having a regular slot on Cheshire radio station Silk FM. After deciding her future lay in health, Danielle moved to Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and had responsibility for external, internal and digital comms for the Royal Manchester Children s Hospital, the University Dental Hospital of Manchester and Corporate Services. In 2015, Danielle was asked to consider applying for a secondment to help implement the communications strategy for Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Devolution where she spent nine months working on the communications for the first STP to be implemented in the country. Danielle began working for the Royal College of Nursing as the Regional Communications Manager for the North West in 2016 where she develops and manages communications for the region.
