Putting on the uniform of a U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps officer means joining an elite team of professionals who protect, promote, and improve the health and safety of our nation. Our physicians, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, or practitioners from one of several other professions bring health care to underserved populations, guard Americans from emerging diseases and other biological threats, and provide critical services to humanitarian missions and public health emergencies, and much more. We are America's first responders. As you consider your future health career, consider if you have what it takes to be an officer in the Public Health Service. 13 HOSA Event Topics National Theme: HOSA: The Hearts that Believe and the Hands that Achieve Submitted by Illinois HOSA Public Health Emergency Preparedness topic category is: Be Prepared (state name) Chapters would focus their research and presentations on Public Health Emergency needs that are specific to their region or state. The primary resource for the topic is Prepared Speaking Speaking Skills Researched Persuasive Speaking Biomedical Debate The speech topic is the National Theme: HOSA: The Hearts that Believe and the Hands that Achieve The topics are: Probiotics: Nature s Miracle Cure? Nurseanomics: Should Nurse Practitioners provide primary care without an M.D. s Supervision? topic is: Health Professions Online: The BEST Solution to the Healthcare Workforce Shortage The question to be considered in the preliminary round will be based on this year s topic. This year s Biomedical Debate topic asks teams to agree, or disagree, that online health career education programs are the best solution to the shortage of healthcare workers. When debating the affirmative, teams will address the many benefits of online learning, and how earning a degree online is the single best solution to the healthcare workforce shortage. Of course, teams will need to understand the workforce shortage problem AND online degree programs in order to effectively debate why online learning is the best solution. To debate the negative, teams will take the position that online learning is NOT the best solution to the healthcare workforce shortage, and cite examples of the negative aspects of obtaining a healthcare degree online. The debate topic is not suggesting that online learning is the only solution to the shortage of healthcare workers. What teams need to be prepared to debate is if it is the single best solution, and if not, what is the single BEST solution? Public Service Announcement Medical Reading National Service Project topic is: Get a Healthy Dose of Sunshine Chapters would focus their PSA on teaching the public how to use sunshine safely and effectively to improve health. Questions for this event will come from the following books: The Anatomist: A True Story of Gray s Anatomy (Paperback) ~ Bill Hayes Dr. Fisher s Life on the Ark: Green Alligators, Bushman, and Other Hare- Raising Tales from America s Most Popular Zoo and Around the World (Hardcover) ~ Lester E. Fisher Cheating Death (Hardcover) ~ Sanjay Gupta, MD My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist s Personal Journey (Paperback) ~ Jill Bolte Taylor How Not to Die: Surprising Lessons from America s Favorite Medical Examiner (Paperback) ~ Jan Garavaglia M.D. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation For more information on these and other HOSA Competitive Events, read Section B of HOSA Handbook - Competitive Events Guidelines, or ask your HOSA Advisor 13

On the last day of WLA and the first day of SAM, the HOSA State Officers and State Advisors spent the day on Capitol Hill meeting with their respective members of Congress and their staff to discuss the importance of addressing critical shortages in the healthcare workforce. The Washington Leadership Conference was a huge success with over 120 state leaders and advisors in attendance. On Saturday, September 11, Claire Lucas, National HOSA President, welcomed the leadership to WLA and remembered the heroes and their loved ones of 9/11. Claire challenged each in attendance to remember the purpose of the week and as a leader the importance of time and how they will use their time to accomplish HOSA s goals during the next school year. HOSA met together at the historic White House Eisenhower Executive Office Building while national thought leaders stressed the importance of building the pipeline of future health care workers. Dr. Glenn Cummings, Assistant Secretary for the Department of Education and former educator, addressed the group of 180 student and state leaders. Cummings discussed supplementing health science education and the important role Career and Technical Education plays in fostering the pipeline. On Tuesday, September 14, HOSA state officers met in the U.S. Capitol and listened to prominent members of Congress and their staff speak on the future of health care in America and the critical role that HOSA will play. Congressman Charles Gonzales (D-TX) and Congressman Michael Burgess (R-TX), a physician, spoke to a standing room only crowd and reiterated the country s need for HOSA members. In addition to these members, staff from the Offices of Senator Cornyn (R-TX), Congressman Tierney (D-MA), Congressman Zack Space (D-OH), Senator Inouye (D-HI) and Congresswoman Kay Granger (R-TX) also shared a few words in support of HOSA.
