14 HOSA Event Topics National Theme: HOSA: BUILD A BETTER YOU! Public Health Extemporaneous Speaking Prepared Speaking Speaking Skills topic category is: National Prevention Strategy Teams will use the National Prevention Strategy: America s Plan for Better Health and Wellness as their resource for developing a public health presentation about one or more of the following strategies that contribute to the prevention of disease and the promotion of healthy practices. Injury and violence free living Tobacco free living Preventing drug abuse and excessive alcohol use Active living Healthy eating Can be any topic related to current health issues or HOSA. For example: HOSA and Community Service The Benefits of Service Learning Teens and Smoking The Value of HOSA in Promoting Career Opportunities in Health Care The speech topic is: HOSA: Caring for the Future Extemporaneous Writing Extemporaneous Health Poster Researched Persuasive Speaking Creative Problem Solving This can be any topic related to Health Science Education or HOSA, such as: HOSA: A Contributing Member of the Health Care Community o How does HOSA contribute to the health care community? o What types of services does HOSA provide? o What are the benefits to the health care community? o What are the benefits to HOSA members? Topics will be related to HOSA or Health Science curriculum competencies. Support documentation (articles, pamphlets, etc.) may be provided. For example: Eating Right Tips for Skin Cancer Prevention The Benefits of HOSA Membership The topics are: Hospital Hiring Practices: Persons Who Smoke or Have Visible Tattoos Need Not Apply Junk Food Ban in Schools The secret topic requires the team to solve a problem. The problem may be related to health care or HOSA. Generally, the problem is complex, involving many factors with no clear right or wrong answer. Supportive material is provided. For more information on these and other HOSA Competitive Events, read Section B of HOSA Handbook - Competitive Events Guidelines, or ask your HOSA Advisor. 14

15 HOSA Event Topics Biomedical Debate topic is: Physician Participation in Lifestyle Rationing Should doctors decide whether to treat you or perform certain kinds of surgeries based on whether you are a smoker or not, along with whether you are obese? Physicians say they already routinely deny many cosmetic surgeries and fertility treatments to smokers and the obese, and these factors are used to determine eligibility for many organ transplant procedures. Should physicians support lifestyle rationing, or any type of health care rationing? (Key search terms include but are not limited to: Lifestyle rationing, health care rationing, rationing health care resources, health care costs) The multiple choice questions on the Round One test will assess knowledge of the topic. Parliamentary Procedure Forensic Medicine Public Service Announcement The event guidelines contain a sample problem that includes one or two main motions, with four or five other types of motions to be applied to the main motion in the course of the meeting. The event guidelines contain a sample problem. Typically, the problem includes a crime scene or description of the events leading to the death of a victim(s), and additional documentation which generally includes an autopsy topic is: No Pressure! Tips for Recognizing and Preventing Hypertension The actual title can be changed by the team, as long as the PSA encourages the public to recognize and prevent hypertension. Medical Reading Skill Events HOSA Week The event is now an individual test. Ten multiple choice and one short essay question will come from each of the following five books: Brain Rules by John Medina The Third Wave by Alison Thompson Don t Kill the Birthday Girl by Sandra Beasley The Deadly Dinner Party by Jonathan A. Edlow, MD The End of Illness by David B. Angus, MD Each skill event with procedures is written up as a scenario that requires the competitor to demonstrate 1-3 skills (procedures) as listed in the event guidelines as part of a potential situation in which a health care worker might actually perform the skill(s). The competitor performs the procedures of the event and is evaluated by a judge or judges. November 4-10, 2012 The preferred dates for HOSA Week will be the first full week (Sunday through Saturday) of November. If desired, chapters may designate an alternate week as HOSA Week for their chapter to fulfill the requirements of this event. National Service Project Cystic Fibrosis Foundation 15

16 Competitive Event Updates and Reminders It is essential that competitors follow the event guidelines when preparing for and participating in HOSA competitive events. The most current version of the event guidelines can be found at At NLC 2013, competitors MUST bring their copy of the event guidelines to the event orientation. (One copy per team.) The copy of the guidelines may be printed, on a smart phone, or on a tablet. WHY? The event guidelines are referred to during the event orientation in an effort to assure that all competitors understand and follow the rules for their event. General Rules and Regulations Competitors are expected to read and comply with all the rules outlined in the General Rules and Regulations. They are no less important than the specific event guidelines, and serve to communicate the details and processes of the National HOSA Competitive Events Program to HOSA members, event personnel and judges. CELL PHONE POLICY - Competitors may not use cell phones during HOSA competitive events. Competitors may be asked to place their cell phones on the table in the off position (or with the battery removed) in plain sight of the Section Leaders, during the event. If the cell phone makes any noise or vibrates during the event, penalty points may be assessed. Judge cell phones and pagers must be turned off during competitive events. Communication Rule It is the competitor s responsibility to communicate fully and effectively with judges. In spelling events, this may include verbalizing capitalization, separate words, and punctuation. For skill events, this may include thinking out loud so that judges are clear on why the competitors are doing what they are doing. Revision of Team Eligibility Rule - A team event must include at least 25% of the members who were members of the winning team at the state level. Other qualified student members may be substituted or added in the remaining team positions so that the number of team members is consistent with the rules for that event. HEALTH SCIENCE New Event Reminders o There is a new Knowledge Test this year Medical Law and Ethics. o Medical Reading is now an individual event with a written test. ALL SKILL EVENTS Competitors must be prepared to proficiently perform any and all of the skills in the event guidelines for the following skill events. State Advisors will forward the names of qualified HOSA members who are not attending the NLC. Chapter members who wish to be a member of the National Courtesy Corps should register online with their conference registration. Chapter members who are helping with their state s competitive event (we call them Event Assistants) should NOT register online. Your state and local advisor will have that information. DO YOU KNOW WHAT TO BRING TO YOUR EVENT? Look at the Facilities, Equipment and Materials section of the guidelines. *** indicates something the competitor must bring to the event. BE SURE you know if you need to bring a laptop, DVD, photos, and/or other materials for your event. 17 Competitive Event Updates and Reminders DRESS CODE Competitors and event personnel follow the event guidelines. Dress code for General Sessions is different than for CE but competitors can wear their General Session attire if they want to when business attire is required. Competitors may wear clinical attire for skill event testing. WEDNESDAY TESTS AND EVENT ORIENTATIONS The 2013 HOSA National Leadership Conference officially begins on Wednesday, June 26. Make your travel plans to arrive in plenty of time for your scheduled obligation. MOST event orientations will occur on Wednesday, June 26. Check the tentative agenda to see if your event orientation is scheduled for Wednesday. Some event testing will occur on Wednesday. Late tests will NOT be administered to competitors who are late to the conference for any reason, including late flights and other unforeseen challenges. If you accept the role of Event Manager from your state, please plan to attend the Event Manager Orientation from 11:00 am 12:30 pm on Wednesday, June 26. If you are the Event Manager for one of HOSA s offsite events, you are invited to participate in a site visit to that event site on Tuesday afternoon (June 25) or early Wednesday morning. * For all written tests, competitors MUST bring their own pencil. Pencils will not be provided. 17

Rules to Remember For all written tests, it is the responsibility of the competitor to bring pencils for the event. At the national level, competitors may compete in ONE EVENT ONLY, with the exception of Recognition events. Individual and team participants in national competition must have competed in the same competitive event at the state level for which they are entered at the national level. This competition must have taken place in the school year immediately preceding the HOSA NLC. [Exception to this rule: Healthcare Issues Exam, substitutes or additions to team events, and Recognition events.] Students must be appropriately dressed for BOTH the test and the skill event. (Clothing considered appropriate for the skill event will be allowed for the test.) FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES Every year, competitors lost valuable points because they failed to follow the rules clearly described in the event guidelines. Running For National Office Take a few moments to remember all the goals and aspirations you have had throughout your life. Think of the times when you wanted to accomplish something but there was always something or someone holding you back. Consider the following questions: Have you ever wanted to do something that would give you the opportunity to make a difference? Do you want the opportunity to lead others into the future of health care? With these questions in mind, have you ever considered being a national officer for HOSA? 18 Qualifications for national officer are: GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4-point scale. Junior or Senior in high school (Secondary Division) Postsecondary/Collegiate member (PS/C Division) Believe in yourself and make the decision of a lifetime. 19 Official HOSA Uniform and Dress Code for General Sessions The following official dress code for the student members for ALL general sessions at the NLC will be strictly enforced: HOSA Uniform: Tailored navy blazer with emblem affixed over the heart Shirt/blouse for females (white tailored or short-sleeve white jewel neck shell Shirt for males white closed-neck, man-tailored dress shirt, suitable for use with a tie Accent for female members - maroon HOSA scarf or tie is optional but not required Accent for male officers - navy or maroon long tie Matching navy slacks for males and matching navy slacks or skirts for females Closed-toe blue or black shoes (hose optional for women; men must wear socks) OR Black or navy blue suit With a white shirt (the white shirt can be the member s choice) Closed-toe blue or black shoes (hose optional) Male members MUST wear a tie and socks Female members may choose to wear knee-length skirt or slacks. Student delegates not adhering to the dress policy for all general sessions at the NLC will not be admitted. Official HOSA Casual Dress Code Appropriate dress for official social functions in conjunction with the NLC will include everything EXCEPT tank tops, halter tops, extremely short shorts or skirts and cut-offs. (Shirt straps must be two inches wide and the length of shorts and skirts must be at minimum to the fingertip.) HOSA Talent Search HOSA is looking for talented singers to participate in the National Leadership Conference. If you are interested, please send a video audition tape in either VHS or DVD format to National HOSA. The deadline for entries is March 15, If selected, he/she will sing at one of the general sessions at the National Leadership Conference. 20 Alumni Division 20 We Need Your Help Define HOSA Alumnus: A HOSA alumnus is a graduate of any school who has been a member of HOSA. When should you join the HOSA Alumni Division? The time to join is NOW. If you are a graduating senior, join before you leave school your senior year. If you have already graduated, join now. How do I join? To join, go to and click on the Alumni membership icon in the News column. There are no fees to join this division of HOSA. How Can I Help? The HOSA, Inc. Board of Directors recently voted on the following incentives to get you involved in Alumni Recruitment efforts. HOSA Advisors The advisor who recruits the largest number of alumni members between February 1, 2013 and May 15, 2013 will receive a 2013 NLC registration waiver. Your seniors or previous students who go to and sign up to be a HOSA alumnus will help you win. All they have to do is to put your name in the recruitment referral line as you were the person that recruited them. (If there is a tie on the number recruited by an advisor, the winner would be chosen by a drawing.) State Officers HOSA will provide a Washington Leadership Academy registration scholarship to each state officer for 100 NEW alumni members per officer that are recruited. All the graduating seniors or previous HOSA members have to do is to put your name in the recruitment referral line when they register at The state officer that recruits the most alumni over 100 will receive a registration waiver to the WLA plus all travel expenses. Help Grow the Alumni Division Remember, in order to be a part of this recruitment campaign, the alumni members must be new. If they have previously registered as an alumni member, their additional membership will not count towards your award recognition.

22 Advisor s Corner Continuing Education Units offered at HOSA s NLC in Nashville HOSA will be offering Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for educators. If you are interested in receiving credit, please pre-register online. A packet of information will be distributed at the NLC on Tuesday, June 25 from 8:00-9:00 PM and Wednesday, June 26 from 3:30-4:30 PM. Check the conference program for the location. Staff development options are available as noted. Staff development objectives are listed on the next page in this NLC guide. CEU certificates will be awarded by NATIONAL HOSA. Chapter advisors should check with their local school administration or state advisor to determine if these CEUs are recognized for meeting state teaching licensure requirements. The CEUs offered are Education CEUs and not nursing CEUs. The CEU certificate indicates 10 hours = 1 CEU. If your school system measures units by hour, the certificate will show the hours. 23 Advisor Staff Development Objectives HOSA will again offer chapter advisors an opportunity to earn educational CEUs. Completion of specific learning objectives will result in earned contact hours. Ten contact hours = 1 CEU. IT IS THE ADVISOR S RESPONSIBILY TO DETERMINE IF HOSA CEUs are accepted by the state or local school administration. HOSA Advisors who wish to participate in this program must pre-register on the NLC registration form. There is no additional charge for this service. Participants will register on-site at the NLC on Tuesday, June 21, or Wednesday, June 22, to pick up their CEU forms. Check the conference program for the time and location of CEU registration. Upon completion of the stated objectives and evaluation forms, the advisor will be awarded a certificate of credit before leaving the conference. Make sure that you are using the appropriate code to enter your student into the correct event. Option One: on-line registration through the link provided on HOSA s website. Option Two: fax the registration form that is included on page 28 of the NLC Guide. It is recommended that if you choose this reservation option that you follow up with the hotel by calling reservations and receiving your confirmation numbers. Credit Card Gaylord Opryland requires a credit card to hold the rooms but it will not be charged. The hotel does have a cancellation policy of 72 hours prior to the scheduled arrival. If you cancel before 72 hours, your card will not be charged. If an advisor does not wish to use a credit card to hold the rooms, a deposit check in the amount of the first night s lodging plus taxes must accompany the hotel registration form. This check will be deposited and credited to the total amount owed. If a school is going to pay the hotel bill by check or cash for their rooms at the time of the NLC, a credit card or room amount by cash or check will need to be paid at the time of hotel registration. Gaylord Opryland handles Incidental charges in the following ways at the time of check-in: (1) credit card on hold; (2) a cash deposit for each room in the amount of $50; or (3) check-in request that there are no incidentals made to the room. If no incidental charges are made and you used (1) credit card (2) or cash, the credit card will not be charged and the money will be refunded. Non-Smoking Gaylord Opryland is a non-smoking facility. To preserve the pristine condition of its resort, smoking is prohibited in all guest rooms, restaurants, meeting rooms and interior public spaces. If you smoke, you will be charged a $250 fee to return the room to its proper condition. Your behavior at all times should be such that it reflects credit to you, your school/college, your state and HOSA. 2. Student conduct is the responsibility of the local chapter advisor. Students shall keep their advisors informed of their activities and whereabouts at all times. (HOSA Conference name badges shall be worn at all times at HOSA functions). 3. You are expected to attend all general sessions and other scheduled conference activities. Please be prompt and show respect to those in the audience and on stage. 4. Members are to report any accidents, injuries or illnesses to their local or state advisor immediately. 5. Members are expected to observe the designated curfew. (Curfew means that each person must be in own room by the designated hour.) 6. If a student is responsible for stealing or vandalism, the student and his/her parents will be expected to pay any and all damages. 7. Members/participants attending the National Conference may not purchase, consume or be under the influence of alcohol or drugs at any time. Violators will be subject to stringent disciplinary action. 8. The National HOSA Conference is a non-smoking conference. 9. Students who disregard the rules will be subject to disciplinary action and will be sent home at their own expense. Parents will be notified. 10. Any long distance phone calls, charges to the room, etc. will be the responsibility of the individual student and/ or parents. 11. Members are to abide by the NLC Attire Policy at all business sessions, general sessions, competitive events and other Conference activities. 12. As a delegate to the National Leadership Conference, permission is granted to make photographs, videotapes, broadcasts, and/or sound recordings, separately or in combination, available for reproduction for educational and promotional purposes by National HOSA. GENERAL SESSION PROTOCOL: The general sessions should be enthusiastic but delegates must not be rude or obnoxious to those in the audience or on stage. It is important to remain seated until the end of the session. States that do not adhere to general session protocol will be asked to send a representative to a special meeting of the National Executive Council. 32 GlobalDentalRelief Since 2001, Global Dental Relief (GDR) has been working with volunteer dentists, hygienists, assistants, and non-dental volunteers to bring free dental care to thousands of impoverished children in Nepal, northern India, Guatemala, Vietnam and starting in 2013, Kenya. GDR offers a unique opportunity for student members of HOSA along with their teachers, advisors and families to gain experience as a future health professional, travel the world and do good. As a participant in a GDR dental clinic, HOSA members will:! Gain invaluable experience working alongside veteran health professionals Become immersed in a foreign culture while living and working in communities of need around the globe Build relationships with new friends, potential mentors and employers as well as with local children, families, teachers and non-profit agencies. Design an internship tailored to your interests in treatment planning, clinic management or direct patient care GDR offers 12 trips per year to a variety of locations each including a six-day intensive dental clinic followed by optional opportunities to explore the surrounding area and culture.
