4 3 NEWS NEW NAME. NEW LOGO. SAME MISSION. KRMCA BOARD VOTES TO REBRAND ASSOCIATION AS KCA Rebranding is a tricky process. Rebranding an association that s almost 60 years old is even harder. As difficult as change can be though, it s often a necessary step to achieve goals. KCA Marketing Goals The Kentucky Concrete Association has 5 main marketing goals: 1. Increase the political & business influence afforded to the KCA in the state of KY in order to increase our ability to act as a play-maker in important decisions that affect our industry. 2. Increase awareness for, and educate on, the benefits and versatility of concrete and concrete products in order to increase market share for the concrete industry. 3. Equitably promote our member organizations and their business services in order to provide value to our members and increase their brand awareness. 4. Promote the specific works of our association in the community, as well as the work of member organizations in order to increase our visibility in the community and manage our industry reputation. 5. Increase KCA s brand awareness in order to
5 NEWS 4 position the association as the leading expertise on concrete in the state and thus control the flow of information through the state regarding the concrete industry in a way that benefits the industry. Ultimately this boils down to one main goal for the association: We need to change the public perception of concrete. WE NEED TO CHANGE THE PUBLIC PERCEP- TION OF CONCRETE These goals were developed to help the Association make positive & impactful decisions regarding the use of resources and promotion of concrete throughout the state. Using these goals as a tool can guide decisions that will ultimately increase the market share of concrete in our state. What is our brand? At its simplest, a company s brand is the culmination of everything the market perceives or believes about that company. When we objectively look at our brand within the state, it stands to reason that we have very limited brand visibility. People simply do not know who we are, what we do, or that we even exist. It s time to change that. The Case for Rebranding There are a number of reasons that an organization might seek to rebrand. For the KCA, the main three reasons are change, simplicity, & competition. First, we ve had a change in marketing staff. While this may seem trivial, it often benefits an organization to meet this change head on with a rebranding effort, as the skill sets, opinions, styles and techniques vary from one person to the next, and consistency necessary for a solid marketing message. Next, the need to simplify the message of the association presents a need to rebrand. While the KCA will always continue to be a versatile organization capable of creating and implementing a wide array of educational and promotional efforts, the main marketing message should be simplified: Kentuckians benefit when concrete is used. Finally, and most importantly, the concrete industry as a whole needs to compete at a higher level, and the KCA is positioned to be a big player in that competition. Over the last 5 years, the softwood lumber industry has captured a large portion of market of mid-rise multi-family building construction. They ve done that through large infusion of capital through their checkoff program which they used to improve their marketing collateral and rebranded efforts. The competition that we re facing has already got a jump start on an updated marketing plan, and now the KCA must catch up to regain ground. This new marketing and rebranding effort will be the first step in a long and strategic plan for winning back market share and solidifying the brand of the concrete industry in the minds of Kentucky residents. When someone needs concrete answers - we want to be the first place they call. This rebranding effort will make that a possibility.
6 5 CLASSES LEVEL II CLASSES WRAP UP FOR THE SEASON CERTIFICATIONS The KCA had a busy final stretch of Level II classes this winter. The class was filled to capacity (and then some!) due to the high demand for the KCA Level II Certification. As always, the KCA strives to offer the very best educational certification programs and this season s Level II course was no exception. This was the first year that the Level II course has been shortened to a single week with the previous second week being converted into the new KCA Level III (more info on pg. 8). Remember, if you d like to attend one of the KCA certification courses, be sure to register early to secure your position in the class. 9 CLASSES 8 KCA LEVEL III A NEW CERTIFICATION COURSE The Kentucky Concrete Association has recently developed a new educational program designed to cover a wide range of concrete related topics. It could be of interest not only to those involved in concrete production, but to others with whom the concrete production industry interfaces such as specifiers, designers, contractors, etc. This course is designed as KCA Level III. Topics include those previously covered during the second week of KCA Level II, plus several other important ones. The second week of Level II has been discontinued beginning this current season. The agenda provides a reference of scheduled topics and presenters. This course agenda can be found online at lvl3agenda. The class is scheduled for 3 1/2 days of classroom presentation and discussion for the dates of March 6th - 9th. An open book written exam which is optional to an attendee will be administered on the afternoon of March 9th. Those who elect to take the exam and who achieve a passing score (minimum 75%) will be issued a Level III Certification document. To our knowledge, no specifying agency has plans to reference it as a requirement for project specifications, proposals, etc. For those electing to attend the entire class, a workbook (containing copies of presentations and any related chosen documents) and a PCA publication entitled Design and Control of Concrete Mixes will be provided. The fee in this case is $400/person. However, if the PCA publication is not desired, then the fee is reduced by $ If one wishes to attend only a portion of the entire class, the fees will be as follows: For any portion of, or up to a single day, the cost shall be $100 For any portion of a second day, or up to two full days, the cost shall be $200 For any portion of a third day, or up to 3 full days, the cost shall be $300 The Workbook Publication can be requested for an additional $100 to the base fee above. Qualifications of this class content for engineer s professional development credit hours will be judged by the self-auditing individual. For architects attending needing professional development hours, we intend to have the class content approved by the state qualifying agency. In any case, we will provide hours of attendance documentation for any person requesting it. You may register for this class using the form available online at kyconrete.org, attached to page 15 of this newsletter, or by calling the office at If you have any questions, call John McChord at
10 9 WINTER CONVENTION 2017 CONVENTION USHERS IN BIG CHANGES FOR ASSOCIATION CONVENTION The 2017 Winter convention was a great success! John McChord joined the ranks of KCA s Legends of the Industry, Ben Yost took up the mantle of acting Association President, and the Association officially changed it s name to the Kentucky Concrete Association or KCA for short. It was a pretty eventful meeting, to say the least. Embassy Suites, Covington KY The educational sessions this year provided a range of topics, and attendance was up from past years. The KCA will continue to work hard to ensure that we re always improving the quality and variety of education that our members desire at these events. As always, the event had it s fair share of just plain fun - just ask any of our members that attended the bowling tournament at Howl at the Moon!
