Bring out your dancing shoes and the love in your heart for music and those you love. On Tuesday, Feb. 14th, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., we will be having a semi-formal cocktail party and dance with refreshments, spirits and entertainment by Grant Danley. Please plan on joining us for this special event and RSVP to Elizabeth. February 2017 Hear Ye! Hear Ye! In honor of Valentine s Day, we would like our residents and staff to bring in a photograph from when they were a baby and have a challenge of Guess Who? We will make a color copy of the photo and then return the original to you. The photo will be displayed for a period of time with everyone having the opportunity to take their guess on the answer ballot. Why not participate and have a little fun? If interested, please see Elizabeth. Get Your Ballot and Vote! Stop by the Life Enrichment office to get your ballot to vote for the King and Queen of American House at Dearborn Heights. Choose your community residents who should have the honor of wearing the crown. They will be announced at the social event on Feb. 14th at 2:30 p.m., and their presence will be required at the Valentine s Dance in the evening.
2 2 Trivia Whiz A Landmark for Lincoln The Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., honors the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Born Feb. 12, 1809, Lincoln served from 1861 to The building contains inscriptions of Lincoln s Gettysburg Address and his second inaugural address. Carved from 28 blocks of white Georgia marble, the statue of Abe is 19 feet tall. The Lincoln Memorial cost $3 million to build. The structure was dedicated on May 30, About 50,000 people attended the ceremonies, including hundreds of Civil War veterans and 78-year-old Robert Todd Lincoln, the president s son. About 6 million people visit the site each year. Love by Dolores S. What crosses your mind when you hear the word LOVE? Do you think of husband and wife still in love after many years of marriage? Do you think of your children, weddings, getting together on Sunday for dinner? Do you think or know how much God loves you? God loves you enough to send His son Jesus to die for you and me. Love is watching your baby come into this world. When I think of love I think of my own three sons and daughters-in-law. They are all a blessing to me. They keep me and take care of me now that I am growing older. Sometimes I ask, God What did I do to deserve such a family? It s love-god s love. Valentine s Day is a day to show others what love is. It is a day for a woman buying her man a new tie or baking his favorite pie. Love is handing over the remote control so your husband can watch his shows. (This I know!) Love is giving your best girl an engagement ring. Show your friends and neighbors some love. Love is all these things but the best love is God s love to all of us. Today, tell someone you love them. God says, Love one another. Trip to Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History On February 16, we will be taking a trip down to the museum to see over 35,000 artifacts and archival materials that is the home to the Harriet Tubman Museum collection and many others. The museum features an interactive core exhibit, ring of genealogy, 92 flags displayed by country and origin, and others. The cost is $5 for seniors and $8 for adults and we will be having a scheduled tour at the museum. There will be some walking, so be prepared and wear comfortable shoes. After we are done at the museum, we will be going out to lunch. If interested, please see Elizabeth. Intergenerational Visit Thank you, Global Heights Academy for visiting with us.
3 3 Wit & Wisdom American House Transportation Service We have an eight-passenger van, which includes a wheelchair lift capable of lifting up to 300 pounds. The wheelchair cannot exceed 30 inches in width and the van cannot accommodate electric wheelchairs. Scheduled appointments need to be within 10 miles of our building; medical appointments take priority. To schedule an appointment, please call Renee Stokes at (248) Please allow hours notice. Please remember, our normal scheduled days are Mondays and Tuesdays. Romance is the glamour which turns the dust of everyday life into a golden haze. Elinor Glyn In a great romance, each person basically plays a part that the other really likes. It only takes a few minutes of our time to introduce ourselves and spread a little sunshine! So, go ahead: introduce yourself, smile, talk and make a new friend. Practice random acts of kindness. Lee M. Ken and Fran A. Tradition wears a snowy beard; romance is always young. John Greenleaf Whittier The word romance, according to the dictionary, means excitement, adventure and something extremely real. Romance should last a lifetime. Billy Graham To me, romance and suspense go hand in hand. What s more suspenseful than wondering how two wonderful people can manage to get together in spite of the world going crazy around them? 6 7 Interesting Chocolate Facts By Brian K. Rosso, R.D. Chocolate is a food enjoyed by most people, especially at Valentine s Day. Here are some interesting facts about chocolate: Worldwide, consumers spend more than $20 billion per year on chocolate products. It takes about 400 cacao beans to create 1 pound of chocolate. Chocolate is a great source of antioxidants, which have been shown to reduce a person s risk of developing cancer or heart disease. Snickers is the No. 1 selling chocolate bar in the world. Eating dark chocolate in moderation can lower a person s cholesterol levels. Americans prefer milk chocolate over dark chocolate; however, the consumption of dark chocolate is increasing. Try to eat dark chocolate containing at least 40 percent cacao (will be stated on the chocolate candy wrapper) for the most health benefits. The first United States chocolate factory was built in The average American eats 12 pounds of chocolate every year. One tablespoon of cocoa powder contains almost 10 percent of the daily requirement for iron intake. The first chocolate candy bar was made in Chocolate is made from cacao beans. However, the cacao bean is actually a seed. Chocolate can offer some health benefits, but it should be eaten in moderation because of the calories associated with the fat and sugar content. Happy Valentine s Day! The Knit Wit Club! Our community has started this group so we can help those in the community. The Knit Wit Club meets once a week to get together and knit, crochet, tie, sew or embroider to make hats, scarves, and maybe even mittens to donate to local shelters in the surrounding areas. It is our hope that we can contribute greatly but also feel a sense of purpose and fulfill our desire to help others. If there are any family and friends who would also like to help us with this project, it would be greatly appreciated. See Elizabeth for more details. Think About It! Brainteaser Question: A man is standing on one side of a river; his dog is on the other side. The man calls the dog, which quickly crosses the river without getting wet and without using a bridge or a boat. How did the dog do it? Answer: The river is frozen. Logic Problem Punxsutawney Phil isn t the only groundhog checking for his shadow on Feb. 2. Using the clues below, can you figure out how many groundhogs around the world join Phil in his yearly ritual? 1. The number of groundhogs is a three-digit number. 2. The sum of the digits in the tens place and the ones place is the digit in the hundreds place. 3. The sum of all three digits is The ones digit is one greater than the tens digit. Answer: 734
