3 Liability Waiver & Statement of Understanding Liability Waiver The waterfront program participant assumes full responsibility for any loss or damage, exception loss or damage covered by insurance, that may come to any person, boat, pier, float, or other property used in conjunction with this program as the result of improper use, negligence, violation of the Navigation Rules and racing rules, and other acts of participants, or other representatives of the host location in connection herewith. The participant further agrees to hold SUNY Maritime College and their representatives harmless for personal injuries and/or property damage. The participant also accepts that the conduct of this program entail and are subject to certain inherent risks and accepts all risks on land and at sea of participation in this program. Photography Waiver By signing this form, the parent/guardian permits SUNY Maritime College to use pictures of their child as a program participant in promotional literature published and used by SUNY Maritime College, including but not limited to, news stories, newsletters, magazines, brochures, and our web site. Cancellation Policy Should a student suffer an illness or injury prior to program start date which prevents them from participating in regular activities (a note from a doctor will be required) balance paid will be refunded less $50 processing fee. Should a student decide not to attend a program for other reasons, not related to illness or injury, the balance paid will be non-refundable, unless SUNY Maritime College is able to confirm a fully-paid replacement for the spot before program begins. A $50 processing fee would apply. Under no circumstances will a refund be issued once a program has begun. Behavior Policy SUNY Maritime College Summer staff reserves the right to dismiss, without refund, any student whose behavior, including but not limited to bullying and reckless or irresponsible actions, affects the well-being and enjoyment of fellow students. 5 Maritime Passport to Oceanography Summer Program Program Description/Schedule Description: This summer program will provide high school students interested in the marine environment with a hands-on laboratory and field experience by exposing them to marine environmental science and environmental issues in surrounding New York waters. Emphasis is placed on maintaining the SUNY Maritime Water Quality Monitoring Station, thus, teaching students basic environmental monitoring and data collection techniques. Overall, this program will allow students to interact with the marine environment from a scientific and recreational perspective. Outcomes: Understanding of basic oceanographic concepts. Understanding of local marine environmental issues. Familiarity with environmental data collection and analysis. Proper handling and function of basic oceanographic equipment. Pre-college experience. Fun! Summary Schedule (subject to change): In brief, each day will consist of short instructional lectures, field sampling, laboratory experiment/analysis, and water activity (kayaking, pool time, and/or small boat use). Day 1: Orientation, introduction to science and scientific method, description of course, tour of waterfront Day 2: Introduction to physical oceanography, scientific method lab, beach walk with geological and physical oceanography emphasis, waterfront activity Day 3: Introduction to geological oceanography, data analysis lab, field sampling 1, waterfront activity Day 4: Introduction to chemical oceanography, microscope lab, field sampling 2, waterfront activity Day 5: Introduction to biological oceanography, plankton lab, field sampling 3, waterfront activity Day 6: Environmental issues in NY waters, ichthyology lab, field sampling 4, waterfront activity Day 7: Environmental Issues in NY waters, water quality lab, field sampling 5, waterfront activity Day 8: Environmental Issues in NY waters, water quality lab, field sampling 6, water front activity Day 9: Field Trip TBD Day 10: Course wrap up, presentation of certificates, discussion of careers and directions in marine science, the college application process, and opportunities at Maritime.
6 Time/Place Program hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. We will begin and end each day in Room 324 in the Science Building. If you are going to be absent or late for any reason you must notify us by calling before 9 a.m. Only individuals authorized by you in writing ahead of time and who present ID will be allowed pick-up your child. (see Liability Waiver & Statement of Understanding) Meals Participants will have a nutritious buffet style lunch including a salad bar, sandwich bar and hot entree each day in the College s cafeteria. Special Concerns Prior to the start of the program, any behavioral problems or special physical, emotional, psychological, or medical needs, including allergies, should be identified or discussed with the program director. All waterfront and laboratory activity will be supervised by trained staff.
7 Maritime Passport to Oceanography Summer Program What to Wear T-shirt Shorts Close toed shoes that can get wet - old sneakers or water shoes, flip flops cannot be worn in the laboratory at any time. What to Bring Backpack containing: o Refillable water bottle o Bathing suit o Beach towel o Hat o Sunscreen o Sunglasses o Eye-glasses (with safety lanyard to prevent losing them), contacts and back-up pair of glasses o Medication (i.e. asthma inhaler, epi-pen) o Notebook and pen o Folder for handouts Positive attitude Sense of Adventure United States Coast Guard approved life jacket will be provided for each student. Laboratory safety equipment will be provided by SUNY Maritime College. Please leave electronic games, music players and other unnecessary valuables at home.
