1 The 2005 Raising Student Achievement Conference has been designed to be the one professional conference for you to attend each year to get your high-quality, research based professional development. Administrators and teachers alike are under increased pressure to meet the standards set forth by No Child Left Behind. Attending professional development opportunities as a team creates a framework for educational growth through collaborative dialogue which leads to school achievement and student success. The conference session strands have been devoted to Subgroup Populations, Data Analysis for School Improvement, Content Instruction, School Culture, and Leadership providing you with the tools necessary to Move ALL Children Forward. We hope to see you and your team in December! Designed and sponsored by Regional Offices of Education in collaboration with Intermediate Service Centers and CPS Office of Technology Services e Learning Division. This conference has had a revolutionary impact on our building. As a result of the conference, we have restructured our K-2 reading program. Our staff is so excited about the new reading initiative, they have agreed to meet one Saturday a month throughout the year to collaborate. The enthusiasm and the program has extended to the other elementary schools in the district. What an impact the conference has had on District 112 educators! 2 General Conference Information Keynote Speakers Featured Speakers Dr. Heidi Hayes Jacobs Getting Results with Curriculum Mapping Dr. Heidi Hayes Jacobs, president of Curriculum Designers, Inc., has served as an educational consultant to thousands of schools nationally and internationally. She addresses issues and practices pertaining to: curriculum reform, instructional strategies to encourage critical thinking and strategic planning. Her new book, GETTING RESULTS WITH CURRICULUM MAPPING was released in the fall of 2004, by ASCD. She has served as an adjunct associate professor at Columbia University Teachers College in New York City for over 20 years. Dr. Jacobs is often featured to address the future of curriculum planning for 21 st century learners. Coach Ken Carter Average is Just Not Good Enough, Period! Coach Ken Carter made national news is 1999 when he locked out his undefeated Richmond High Varsity basketball team for failing to honor player contracts and maintain GPA levels. Carter s bold move to hold the team accountable for academic commitments and the controversy surrounding this event caught Hollywood s attention. Coach Carter successfully secured a deal that resulted in the production of a movie based on his life, starring Samuel L. Jackson. Coach Carter continues to be diligent in providing youth with opportunities to build meaningful relationships with their peers and caring adults, and recognizes the importance of academic standards working in conjunction with the district s sports program. Rick Smith Rebels with Applause: Brain Compatible Approaches for Motivating Reluctant Learners Rick Smith is an award-winning teacher, education consultant and international presenter with a passion for working with beginning teachers. Rick s goal is to bring out the best in students and teachers, by offering nurturing ways to bring fun and challenge to education by giving teachers tools for surfing the challenging waves of the classroom experience. He has taught students in San Rafael, CA for over 15 years with a primary focus on students at-risk, and been a mentor/support provider and mentor coordinator for seven years. 4 Administrators Academy Schedule MONDAY Dr. Susan Goodale Curriculum Mapping to Raise Achievement This Administrators Academy will provide an examination of the benefits of mapping. The process will allow leaders to look at rigor and relevance of the existing curriculum; analyze for gaps, repetitions, and redundancies; analyze skills; evaluate quality of assessment; facilitate scope, sequence, and articulation; address curriculum themes; link curriculum and standards for improved performance on assessments; and build communication/collaboration. G. Robb Cooper Update on School Law This program will update administrators on legal aspects of teacher supervision and evaluation, collective bargaining, serving children at risk, a review and analysis of state and federal court decisions in the past year, and legal issues on the horizon. A portion of the day will be devoted to application of IDEIA legislation for regular education. TUESDAY Bennett Rodick Legal Issues in Special Education This academy will review and analyze the major changes created for all Illinois school districts resulting from the new Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act with a special emphasis on the interrelationship between the IDEIA and the obligations of all school districts to improve student achievement under NCLB. Lisa Thanos-Harrod Curriculum Modifications for Exceptional Learners Administrators will learn to identify characteristics of students with special needs and the importance of placing the individual before the disability. Participants will learn how to look at providing access and equity for students with special needs across the content areas. WEDNESDAY Sharnell Jackson Using Data to Ignite Student and Teacher High Performance This course will provide administrators with researchbased strategies for using data for school improvement planning. Administrators will explore the various ways to use data to determine strengths and needs of the school and how to use various data tools to engage the school community to continuous school improvement planning. John Samara The Principal s Role in the Instructional Process This course is designed to help building and district leaders make decisions that will impact the success of their students. Traditional staff development must be coupled with organizational development to bring about marked improvement in student performance. This session will provide information that will help administrators set a course for developing their organizations in ways that bring about measurable success. All six academies are Illinois state approved and will provide you with the Academy credit required for recertification. The Kane County Regional Office of Education will provide Administrators Academy credit. All Administrators Academies will be subject to a $25 processing fee.
