2 North Dakota State Women s Golf Coach Fedje- Weisgarber Head Coach DIANE FEDJE- WEISGARBER kicks off her rookie season as the Bison coach. She is a solid golf professional with teaching and coaching experience. Diane has spent the last seven years as a physical education teacher, business education teacher and a varsity golf coach within the Fargo Public Schools system. She was named the National Federation of High School Activities and NDHSAA Golf Coach of the Year in 2000 and Diane was named the North Dakota girl s golf Coach of the Year for the past four years, and her high school squad won the championship title the last four years. Fedje-Weisgarber earned her bachelor s degree in physical education from Concordia College, MN. Her husband s name is Ray and they have a daughter, Kelly, and a son, Paul. Nicole M. Danielson Senior, St. Cloud, MN Danielson returns for her final season as a Bison golfer as a successful, seasoned veteran. She completed the season with an 83.2 stroke average, and placed sixth in the North Central Conference. Danielson was the first NDSU women s golfer to advance to the NCAA regional tournament, where she placed 25th. Her best rounds of were 78s at the Cobber Open and the SDSU Jackrabbit Invite. She was the medalist at the Cobber Open, the Winona Fall Foliage, and also tied for medalist honors at the Bison/Dragon Dual Meet. Danielson was named to the Verizon Academic All-America College Division District VII Women s At-Large Team and All-NCC Academic At-Large Team in She was also All-NCC in Danielson became the sixth Bison athlete to participate in the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference in May 2002, at Lake Buena Vista, FL, studentathletes are invited to participate from around the country to represent their schools. She is a 1999 graduate of Cathedral High School in St. Cloud, MN, where she was a four-time golf letterwinner and a two-time all-conference performer who also placed at state twice. Nikki is the daughter of Ron and Sue Danielson of St. Cloud, MN, and is in the College of Pharmacy at NDSU. Jessica J. Monson Junior, Fargo, ND Monson was a steady performer during the season for the Bison. The Fargo Shanley H.S. graduate averaged 89.6 strokes per round and her best round was a 76 at the Augustana Invite. She placed seventh at the 2001 North Central Conference Championships and was the runner-up in two meets, the Jackrabbit Invite and the Augustana Invite. Monson competed at Division I Santa Clara University (CA) from with a best round of 75 and a stroke average of 81 after five rounds of play. Jessica is the daughter of Eric Monson and Patti Wentz, and is majoring in speech communication. Jane M. Vangsness Sophomore, Okabena, MN Vangsness is a 2001 graduate at SW Star Concept H.S. in Okabena, MN, where she had an extensive athletic career. She was a fourtime golf letterwinner, two-time MVP in golf and three-time placewinner in the Red Rock Conference, including second place as a senior. Vangsness also competed in volleyball and basketball. In 2001, she competed in three events for the Bison. Vangsness averaged strokes per round and her season low was a 93 at the Winona State University tournament. Jane is the daughter of William and Diane Vangsness of Okabena, MN, and is majoring in mass communication. Sarah M. Welder Sophomore, Bismarck, ND Welder is a 2001 graduate of Bismarck (ND) Century H.S., where she was active in athletics. Welder took fourth at the state golf tournament her senior year and was a two-time letterwinner. She was also on the hockey and soccer teams, competing with both teams in state tournaments during her prep career. Welder was also a member of the National Honor Society. Sarah is the daughter of Vern and Joyce Welder of Bismarck, ND, and is in the College of University Studies. She has career aspirations of being an orthodontist. Amanda R. Wellenstein Freshman, Dickinson, ND Wellenstein is a fashion merchandising major at NDSU, who begins her rookie season on the Bison roster. She graduated from Dickinson (ND) H.S. in 2002 as a three-time all-region and three-time all-conference golf performer. Wellenstein was named the female athlete of the year at Dickinson H.S. her senior year. In 2001, she was the West Region medalist and helped her golf team finished third at state. She lettered in golf all four years. Wellenstein also was a memember of the basketball team that placed sixth at state. Mandie is the daughter of Doug and Olivia Wellenstein of Dickinson, ND.

3 North Dakota State Men s Golf Coach Johnson Head Coach MATT JOHNSON, general manager and teaching professional at the Sports Bubble in Fargo, entered his second season at the helm of the Bison men s golf program. After graduating from Valley City State (ND) in 1994, Johnson spent a year at the Professional Golfers Career College in Murrieta, CA. Following his schooling, he worked as a golf professional in Valley City, Fargo, and Wahpeton, ND. His contributions to NDSU extend beyond the golf program as he also teaches golf classes for the university. He has taught over 3,500 private golf lessons and has conducted several junior clinics. Johnson is a native of Valley City, ND. Taylor R. Fontaine Freshman, Grafton, ND This Grafton H.S. graduate was first team allstate his senior year and was a four-year letterman. He also achieved the Most Desire award twice and was the team MVP his senior year after claiming medalist honors at the state competition with 71 strokes (-1). The College of University Studies major is the son of Sherie Eiharson and Robert Fontaine. Brock G. Graff Freshman, Morris, MN This Morris Area H.S. graduate is an all-state and three-time all-conference performer. He was also the team captain for two years and was a letterman. This landscape architecture major is the son of Keith and Brenda Graff. Jayme B. Gronneberg Sophomore, Cooperstown, ND Transferred from the University of North Dakota in time for the spring NDSU/UND Dual meet, will add strength to the Herd in He was a successful golfer at UND and placed third at the Concordia Invite as a freshman. Gronneberg graduated from Griggs County Central H.S., where he was all-conference, all-state and a two-time Class B state champion. This pharmacy major is the son of ReNae Ashland and Bruce Gronneberg. Jay H. Haug Sophomore, Moorhead, MN This Moorhead H.S. graduate competed in three events during the 2001 season, gaining valuable experience. He had a 79.4 stroke average with a best round of 77 at the University of North Dakota Invite. During his prep career he was a four-year golf letterman and team captain his senior year. This College of University Studies major is the son of Harley and Cheryl Haug. Dana R. Husby Sophomore, Park Rapids, MN This 2000 graduate of Park Rapids Area H.S., was a four-time first-team all-conference golfer who won the subsection tournament his sophomore year. He was also a two-time team captain and team MVP. This mass communications major is the son of Ron and Jan Husby. Jon J. Miller Sophomore, Glyndon, MN This Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton High School graduate made an impact on the Bison team in 2001 with steady performance and a stroke average of 79. His best round came at the Irv Kaiser Invitational when he shot a 73. He was the NDSU/UND Dual meet medalist with 74 and placed third at the St. Olaf Invite with a 153 (74 and 79). This human performance and fitness major is the son of George and Vivian Miller. Nicholas A. Paulsen Senior, Alexandria, MN This seasoned veteran on the Bison roster in his fourth season. In 2001 he averaged 83.6 strokes per round with his best score of the season a 74 at the University of North Dakota Invite. The Jefferson H.S. graduate was a three-time golf letterman and all-conference as a senior. This accounting major is the son of Rick and Sandy Paulsen. Dave M. Reek Junior, Fargo, ND This will be this Fargo native s third season on the Bison golf squad. His first season in 1997 was highlighhted by a 22nd-place finish in the NCC Championships with a 239. He then finished the 1999 season with a 5th-place NCC finish with a 228. The Fargo South H.S. graduate was a two-time golf letterman, two-time first-team all-conference and all-state performer. This mass communications major is the son of Mike and Vicki Reek. Nick D. Stromberg Sophomore, Wahpeton, ND This veteran s best round on the links in 2001 was a 77 at the UND Sioux Invite. His season stroke average was The three-time golf letterman at Wahpeton H.S. was named to the All-East Region team after placing fifth in the region. This mass communications major is the son of Connie and Tim Stromberg. Todd A. Taverna Junior, New Rockford, ND A rookie on the Bison roster, this 1999 New Rockford H.S. graduate was a four-time golf letterman and a two-time all-state performer. This business major is the son of Scott and Nan Taverna.

4 North Dakota State University NDSU President Joseph A. Chapman Dr. Joseph Chapman begins his fourth year as the 13th president of North Dakota State University. Before being named to his post in 1999, Chapman served as senior vice president and provost at Montana State University, Bozeman, where he also served as a professor of biology. Prior to his tenure at Montana State, he was dean of the College of Natural Resources at Utah State University from 1983 to He spent 14 years at the University of Maryland, College Park, advancing to head the Appalachian Environmental Laboratory. A native of Oregon, Chapman earned his bachelor s degree, master s degree and doctorate from Oregon State University, Corvallis. Active in a number of organizations in the Fargo-Moorhead area, Chapman is a member of the boards of directors of US Bank, Fargo/Cass County Economic Development Corp., NDSU Alumni Association and the NDSU Research and Technology Park. He also is a trustee of the NDSU Development Foundation. In 2000, Chapman was invited to join the Cosmos Club, a private social club founded in 1878 in Washington, D.C., that is dedicated to science, literature and art. His vita lists 11 books and editorships, eight monographs, 31 book chapters and symposia proceedings, 67 journal publications and more than 100 reports and popular articles. Chapman and his wife, Gale, have two daughters, Valerie, 17, and Jennifer, 14. Director of Athletics Gene Taylor When he came to NDSU in the summer of 2001, Gene Taylor inherited an athletic department surrounded by a whirlwind of questions, and was asked to spearhead a comprehensive study and evaluation of the Bison athletic program. The Arizona native, with roughly a year s worth of research in his pocket, gave President Joseph Chapman the thumbs-up to promote NDSU s 16 intercollegiate teams to Division I status. Beginning with the season, NDSU will be a full-fledged Division I program faced with building dollars and talent to retain the winning tradition NDSU has owned for so long at the Division II level. Taylor himself knows how to work from the bottom up. A student assistant to the associate athletic director in his undergraduate days at Arizona State University, then a 15-year stint at Navy ( ) as an administrative assistant, assistant ticket manager, ticket manager, assistant athletic director for tickets and operations, and associate athletic director. A 1980 graduate in business management from Arizona State, he received his master s degree in sports administration in 1985 from St. Thomas University in Florida. Taylor worked in the ticket office at Southern Methodist University in directly before joining the Naval Academy. His tenure at Navy included serving as the commissioner of the five-team Collegiate Sprint Football League that includes Army, Navy, Penn, Princeton and Cornell. Taylor and his wife, Cathy, are the parents of a daughter, Casey, and a son, Jared. Lynn Dorn Director of Women s Athletics Enthusiasm, innovation and hard work are the conerstones to Lynn Dorn s remarkable 25-year record at NDSU. As the director of women s athletics, Dorn leads one of the most successful and respected programs in NCAA Division II. The numbers are incredible. The Bison women s teams have seven national titles, 56 North Central Conference titles in nine sports, 100 national appearances, five conference All-Sport Trophies with 96 All-Americans in six sports to their credit. Three Bison competitors have been named the Honda Broderick Division II Most Outstanding Female Athlete and five have received the NCIAC s Stan Marshall Award. In the classroom, the student athletes academic achievement mirrors their athletic excellence. Fifteen women have been selected GTE College Division Academic All-Americans and eight have earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. 5 North Central Conference The North Central Conference is widely acclaimed as one of the nation s finest athletic conferences. Over the past nine years, NCC member institutions won NCAA Division II national championships in football, wrestling, basketball, softball, cross country, women s track and volleyball. In addition to NDSU, the league includes Nebraska-Omaha, Augustana (Sioux Falls, SD), North Dakota (Grand Forks, ND), Northern Colorado (Greeley, CO), South Dakota (Vermillion, SD), South Dakota State (Brookings, SD), St. Cloud State (St. Cloud, MN) and Minnesota State (Mankato, MN). The conference is under the leadership of commissioner Mike Marcil. Of the nine original charter members, NDSU, North Dakota, South Dakota State, and South Dakota still remain in the league. Two North Central Conference institutions have announced plans to reclassify their athletic programs from NCAA Division II status to NCAA Division I Status. The University of Colorado is withdrawing from membership effective July 1, 2003 and North Dakota State University announced that it plans to begin the process to reclassify to NCAA Division I. North Dakota State will participate in the North Central Conference and the Division II for the and academic years.
