3 Announcements Club Fair Our Club Fair is on Tuesday, September 11th during all lunches in the hallway outside of the Cafeteria and Auditorium. Encourage your child to stop by and find out what we have to offer at Butler! Joining a club is a great way to meet people and develop lasting friendships. Cap & Gown Orders If your senior missed ordering their graduation cap and gown at lunch today, don t worry, you can order them directly through the Herff Jones website. The caps and gowns are a new design this year, so there will be no extras to provide if you forget to order. Do not delay! Senior Portraits If you did not have your senior portrait taken over the summer, Metro Portraits will be in our Media Center on September 13th and 14th. Please contact Metro Portraits to set up an appointment. Their phone number is (704) Blood Drive Our Academy of Health Sciences (AOHS) is sponsoring a Blood Drive on September 24th from 7:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Butler. Students aged 16 and 17 need parental consent. If you are 18 or older, you do not need parental consent.. The Red Cross will have a registration table set up outside of the Cafeteria on September 20 and 21st for interested students. 3

4 Announcements College Admissions & FAFSA Night Our Counseling Department will host a special information session for senior parents concerning the college admissions process and the FAFSA on September 27th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in our Media Center. At 5:30 p.m. is a college admissions information session. Our FAFSA speaker begins at 6:00 p.m. and will discuss its importance and how it relates to scholarships, financial aid, grants and work/study programs. If you have a senior this year, don t miss this important event! Powder Puff Football SIGN-UP: Students interested in participating in our Powder Puff Football game, either as a cheerleader or player, should pick up a form outside of room 410 between now and September 12th. The cost is $20 and includes a T-shirt. Pay the fee through our Online School Payments tab on Butler s website. We need payment by September 13th; no exceptions. PRACTICE: for students who paid their $20 fee will be held on our soccer field October 2nd from 6:30-7:30 p.m. GAME: Our Powder Puff Football game is on October 4, 2018, on our football field from 6:30-7:30 p.m. It is free to everyone! Come join us! Homecoming Dance Save the date - our Homecoming Dance is on October 6, 2018, from 7:00-10:00 p.m. in our Cafeteria. The cost is $10 at the door (cash only). Further details to follow. Senior Yard Signs If you have a senior at Butler this year - congratulations! What better way to show your pride than by purchasing a Senior Yard Sign! 6 Coming Soon College Application Time Senior year is about preparing for the next stage of your child s life. No matter how much you prepared for this moment, your senior still needs your guidance and advice. In October, most colleges begin accepting applications for early decision and early action before the regular deadline. What is the difference between the two, and what are the benefits of applying early? Benefits of Applying Early Most colleges allow students to apply early with a decision made in December or early January. If your student has a clear first choice college, then applying early may be a good choice for him or her. Many colleges and universities require applicants to apply by the Early Action deadline to be eligible for scholarships and special programs. It shows the college that your student is serious about attending that school which in turn, may give her an advantage. It cuts down on the stress of waiting because the student will receive a decision of some sort whether the application is accepted, declined or deferred. If your student is accepted to her first choice school, there is no need to pay additional application fees. Early Decision vs. Early Action Approximately 450 colleges have early decision or early action plans some have both. If your student applies early, she may have a choice of early decision or early action. In North Carolina, the colleges with early decision are: Davidson, Duke, Elon, High Point, Meredith, Wake Forrest and Warren Wilson. Early Decision is binding students accepted as early decision must attend that college. Students can apply to only one early decision college. If the college offers sufficient financial aid, the student must go to that college. Students can apply to other colleges through the regular admission process while awaiting an early decision, but they must withdraw all other applications if accepted by the early decision college. Early Action is nonbinding students receive a response to their application but don t have to commit to the college until the official reply date in late spring. Many colleges in North Carolina have early action, including but not limited to: NC State, UNC, Western Carolina, Queens, Lenoir-Rhyne, Greensboro, Guilford, etc. In early action plans: Students can apply to more than one early action college. If accepted, they can say yes right away or wait until late spring to decide. They can also decline the offer. 7 Leadership Opportunities A Chick-fil-A Leader Academy The Chick-fil-a Leader Academy is a national high school leadership program focused on IMPACT THROUGH ACTION. The world needs more leaders who impact their local communities, and we believe high school students are the answer! Applications are now open and online at: What We Believe Our motto is Impact through Action! Through each one of the 7 Leader Labs you will effectively: Engage students where they are through relevant activities. Expose them to exciting and inspirational leadership lessons. Equip them with tools to put all they ve learned into action. Perhaps the most exciting component of Chick-fil-a Leader Academy is the Impact Project. Students will work together over the course of the year on an Impact Project of their choosing, enabling them to creatively put into practice their leadership training and bring lasting change to the local community. Mayor s Youth Employment Program The Mayor s Youth Employment Program (MYEP) provides career and professional development experiences to eligible and accepted youth through part-time internship or job placements. Host employers participate with MYEP by offering positions that align with either an internship or job experience. MYEP cannot guarantee acceptance or placement in a role that aligns with an applicant s desired career choice. But they do try to make mutually beneficial matches of applicants to Host Employers. MYEP applicants must: Be in high school at the time of their application Be at least 16 years old on or before April 15, 2019 Attend Job & Career Readiness Training in the Fall of 2018 Provide their Social Security number Be eligible for employment in the US Agree to a criminal background check Agree to allow the MYEP to photograph and/or video record Agree to complete a drug screen within a set timeframe and must test negative for controlled substances. Jet s Pizza Night First Wednesday of the month when school is in session from 2:30-7:00 p.m. includes dine in, take out and delivery! Showmars Night Every Monday when school is in session, 2:30-7:00 p.m. at the Independence Boulevard location only. You MUST mention Butler. City Barbeque The last Friday of every month, City Barbeque donates 25% of your order to the PTSO. Just print out the flyer on the previous page and take it to the City Barbeque on Galleria Boulevard the last Friday of the month! Link your Harris Teeter VIC card to the Butler PTSO! 14 Students Must Stay on Campus Students must remain in designated areas before and after school and during lunch. Students are not allowed to go to their cars nor leave campus during the school day without approval from Administration. Students who leave campus illegally will be searched upon return. Consequences ranging from community service to Out of School Suspension (OSS) will be given for repeat offenders. Only Parents Can Bring Lunch Only parents are allowed to drop off lunches for their children. Siblings, family members, and friends are NOT permitted to drop off lunch. Also, deliveries of food from outside vendors is not permitted, even if ordered by a parent. No Deliveries Please Students are not permitted to receive deliveries of flowers, balloons, stuffed animals, etc. while at school. They are not permitted to have these items in the classroom. Also, we cannot accept food deliveries for the classroom (e.g., cupcakes, pizza, cookies) due to student allergy concerns. Thank you for your cooperation! CMS Attendance Policy Semester-long classes must have 10 or fewer absences for the semester. Year long classes must have 10 or fewer absences for the year. A/B Day classes (which meets every other day) must have 10 or fewer for the year. Students with more than 10 absences must attend recovery sessions in order to pass class regardless of their final grade. Early Dismissal Please make every effort to schedule appointments after 2:30 p.m., on early release days or on days when there is no school. See School Calendar It is critical your child is in class. Missing a block, or even part of it, makes it difficult for your student to keep on track. Early dismissal notes for student drivers are due to the Front Office by 7:15 a.m. Be sure to include your student s ID number on the note. If you forget to send a note, you can the office at ButlerHigh@cms.k12.nc.us. Phone calls are not accepted for early dismissals. Parents are always welcome to come directly into the school to request early dismissal for their student without sending a note. Parents must show a valid ID. Thank you! 14

15 Student Tardy Policy To maximize instructional time and to minimize classroom disruptions, the following policies will apply: All tardies will result in After School Detention, In School Detention and/or loss of driving privileges. A bus pass will be issued to students who arrive on a late bus. This pass will allow students to enter class without a penalty. Students that arrive by car and are tardy to school for a valid reason should be escorted into the office by a parent to verify the reason for the tardy and avoid school consequences. Repeat offenders are subject to school consequences. Students are not to be out of class during the first 10 minutes of class or the last 10 minutes of class. Students missing over half (1/2) of the class period will be marked absent for the period. Tardy consequences will reset at the second semester which begins on January 23, This policy will be for both 4 x 4 and A-Day/B-Day classes. Failure to comply with any assigned consequence is considered insubordination and may result in Out of School Suspension (OSS). Students will lose parking privileges after their sixth (1st block only) tardy. Cellphone/Headphone Policy Electronic devices should not be seen or heard except during approved times. The approved times for cell phone use is 6:45-7:10 a.m., after 2:15 p.m. and during the student s designated lunch. Students are permitted to look at their cell phones during class change to check the time, text messages, etc. However, for safety and communication purposes, students are not allowed to use headphones, talk on the cell phone or play music during class change. Devices must be put away during class time unless given direct permission from the teacher to use to support instruction. Students must turn over devices if a teacher collects them at the beginning of the class period. All devices must remain in silent mode or turned off. Students using laptops and other technology devices will be required to complete a BYOT device agreement. Any technology used outside of these acceptable use times will be confiscated for five (5) school days or require a parent or guardian to pick up. A device retrieved by a parent or guardian cannot be returned to the student during the school day. 15

16 Dress Code: CMS Code of Student Conduct Rule #4: A student will maintain personal attire and grooming standards that promote safety, health and acceptable standards of social conduct and are not disruptive to the educational environment. Hats, caps, scarves, toboggans, bandannas, hair rollers, combs, sunglasses or other headgear that disguises physical appearance are not allowed during school hours. No underwear or undergarments may show at any point either standing or sitting (ex., bra straps, boxer shorts). Clothing that exposes undergarments or can be seen through is not allowed (e.g., leggings). Pants MUST stay on the hips while walking without being held up by hands (no sagging). Skirts and shorts MUST be fingertip length. Shorts should NOT be rolled up at the waist. Running shorts are not allowed unless worn with leggings that are at least fingertip length. No bellybutton, stomach, cleavage or buttocks should be visible from any position standing or sitting. No tank tops, racer back tank tops, see-through or low cut tops should be worn. At the shoulder for students, the top should abide by the 3 Finger Rule. No pajama tops, bottoms or slippers should be worn to school. Blankets and pillows are not permitted. Shoes should be worn at all times. Clothing with inappropriate images related to drugs, alcohol, tobacco, explicit content, etc. is not allowed. Any students found in violation of these dress code rules will be asked to call a parent or guardian and sent to ISS until proper clothing is obtained. 16

17 Car Pool Line Safety Concerns Under no circumstances should a student be dropped off and expected to walk across Matthews-Mint Hill Road (in front of Butler High School) instead of going through the car pool line. Vehicles making illegal U- turns will result in a traffic violation. All traffic should follow the traffic pattern of entering the school in two separate lines and exiting the same traffic pattern.
