2 BRAE NEWS & EVENTS Senior Spotlight: Garrett Forbes Garret Forbes is a 4th year BRAE major from Eureka. He grew up spending time and working on his grandparents cattle ranch in Arcata, CA. This is where his interest in agricultural equipment and mechanical systems began. As he worked on the ranch and harvested their hay, he had to work with old and outdated equipment. He started thinking about the different and more efficient ways that he could do things. This way of thinking is what sparked his interest in ag engineering. The BRAE department seemed like the right choice to Garrett when applying to school and now can t imagine being anywhere else. During his time at Cal Poly, Garrett has made sure to get involved! He is an actively involved in Tractor Pull and is the current treasurer of AES. He has gotten his Class A drivers license and built the steering on Brian Massetti s Pulling tractor. He has been able to accomplish all of this without ever failing a class and has current cumulative GPA of 3.2! offered, Garrett said. So far, he has built 2 under-mount toolboxes and a transfer tank for the flatbed on his truck, a hitch adaptor and several other small projects. It is all paying off because now that he has some bigger projects in classes, he already knows how to use most of the BRAE machines. When Garrett was asked who his favorite professor was, he was unable to choose. I admire many of our faculty members for different reasons: Dr. Zohns ability to remember any equation relating to engineering and recite it at the drop of a hat, Dr. Schwartz s attitude towards life, Gary s knowledge of engines, Garrett said. As graduation approaches, Garrett is looking to get his professional engineering license and design equipment somewhere relatively close to his family in Eureka CA. Garrett s favorite class he s taken is BRAE 421/422. He says that this class brings everything that they have learned in other courses together and applies it to real life situations. He also says that Dr. Zohns does a good job of explaining the concepts they cover. He has some great tokens of advice to share! He believes in the common philosophy, Don t let school get in the way or your education. He says that he has learned just as much outside of the classroom as he s learned in it. I wanted to learn how to machine and fabricate but instead of waiting until I had a class project that required those skills I made my own projects. Starting as a Sophomore I have taken BRAE 240 (open lab) every quarter it has been 2

3 BRAE NEWS & EVENTS Resource Fair ASI Student Government, Student Affairs, and the Dean of Students Office have come together to put on Cal Poly s first-ever Resource Fair. This two-day event will take place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on February 3 and 4 on Mustang Way. Every booth along the perimeter of Mustang Way will represent different personal, academic, and financial resources available to Cal Poly students. Students can come to engage with their peers, interact with the different booths, and learn about all of the resources our campus provides. Students face personal, academic, and financial hardships at different times and to different extremes; but more often than not they are unaware of the help and support they can receive to alleviate these problems. We want to bring these resources to light and ensure students that they are never alone. Cal Poly is here to help and the Resource Fair is where the solution can start. FE/EIT Review Session The Chi Epsilon Honor Society will be selling tickets to the FE/EIT review sessions during Week 1 of Spring Quarter. The review sessions are a series of 9 lectures to help you get prepared to take the EIT exam. Topics include Thermodynamics, Math, Chemistry, MATE, Mechanics of Materials, Circuits, Fluid Mechanics, Dynamics, and Engineering Economics. Each lecture is presented by a Cal Poly professor who specializes in each topic. This spring, the review sessions will be held during Weeks 3-4. We will be selling tickets outside Kennedy Library from 11 AM to 1 PM on Tuesday (3/29), Wednesday (3/30), and Thursday (3/31) of Week 1. Spaces are limited so sign up early! It is $60 for one ticket and that ticket will get you into all the review sessions. Please cpeitreview@gmail.com if you have any questions! World Ag Expo Don t forget that the World Ag Expo is coming up! When: February 9th -11th Where: International Agri Center South Laspina Street, Tulare Why: This event is filled with thousands of companies and industry leaders showing off their cutting edge technology.
