Though once fall arrives and schools are back in session, Ranken s Admissions and Marketing offices put efforts in full gear. Counselors help Fall Job Fair get the word out about the College and its programs by doing presentations 11/7 at schools, attending college fairs and meeting with potential students when they visit campus. One way we reach many students at once is by hosting various recruitment events on campus during the school year. The first Shadow-a-Tech event of the year was held on Thursday, October 11 and was attended by 50 local high school students. This event gives students the chance to visit campus and spend a half-day in a shop environment with current Ranken students getting a firsthand view of what its like to get a Ranken education. This is a great way to get potential students on campus, said Mike Hawley, director of Admissions. Many of them already know what they want to do but they don t quite know what it would be like to go to a technical school. Its a great opportunity for them to experience how our students learn. The Marketing and Admissions office hosted an event for educators last month and have two more Shadow-a-Tech events scheduled for the fall semester; the first scheduled on Wednesday, November 14 for all majors and the second on Wednesday, December 5 will only be for students interested in the Automotive programs. Other recruitment events during the year include three seperate Placement Testing Days and three seperate Open House events. One sign is located outside of Walker Hall at the corner of Page and Newstead Avenues and points visitors towards the main entrance to find Admissions and the administrative offices.

We thought it was important to have signage in that area to direct guests towards the main entrance at Finney Avenue.

One sign is located outside of Walker Hall at the corner of Page and Newstead Avenues and points visitors towards the main entrance to find Admissions and the administrative offices. Now that we have expanded campus, that area tended to be confusing for guests, said Derek Babcock, director of information and facilities. We thought it was important to have signage in that area to direct guests towards the main entrance at Finney Avenue. Two other larger signs will be installed outside of the main entrance of the Finney building and outside the Cook building near the Cook parking lot. Both signs will include a campus map with a listing of programs and offices, upcoming event dates and general campus information. Career Services Update Throughout the year Ranken s Career Services office hosts several events to help students prepare for graduation and entering the workforce. The first such event of this semester, a Resume Writing and Interviewing Workshop, was held earlier this week. Sara Sublett from Enterprise Fleet Management was the guest speaker for the event and gave the 65 students who attended tips on what should be included on their resume and how to make an impression when interviewing for a new position. Two additional workshops will be offered next week for students; the first on Tuesday, October 16 given by a representative from biomereiux at 8:10 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. and the second on Wednesday, October 17 at 1:30 p.m. given by a representative from the Missouri Career Center. Both sessions will be held in G108/109. Career Services will also be hosting the fall Job Fair on Thursday, November 7 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Approximately 120 companies* are registered to attend and will be accepting resumes from students for current job openings. A few companies even plan to conduct same-day interviews on campus. It is our job to help our students be prepared to graduate and begin their career, said Janie Summers, director of Career Services. These events are a great way for them to hear from successful business men and women about what they look for during the hiring process. The car performed better than expected and made a pass that the team believes to be the quickest pass to date for a car equipped with a 67 mm STS turbo. The Firebird was clocked at 9.90 at 135 mph! Watch a video of the run at The Firebird s next appearance will be tomorrow, Saturday, October 13 as it competes in the King of the College race at Coles County Dragway in Charleston, Ill. The team plans to be back at Gateway on November 7 and November 14. Come out and support your Ranken Race Team! Arrive Alive Tour Coming to Campus On Monday, October 29, Unite International will be stopping by Ranken as part of their Arrive Alive Tour. Unite is the top Health and Wellness Organization in the Nation. They visit campuses on all levels from Elementary schools to college campuses. They have programs that are designed to heighten awareness to the dangers and consequences of drunk driving and a new danger, texting while driving. As part of the tour, Unite will be bringing their Texting and DUI/DWI Simulator to campus. Students will be allowed to experience texting, distracted and compromised driving first hand without actually being in a dangerous situation. There is also a passenger eye view set up so that those students standing around the simulator will be able to experience what the driver experiences from the passenger s point of view. After the simulation students are given a mock ticket so that they can see the physical and legal dangers of texting and distracted driving. A professional facilitator will be asking students questions and giving statistics about texting and distracted driving and its dangers for the duration of the program. Keep Up-To-Date!» 3

This week Automotive and Information Technology began moving equipment in, signage is being designed and will be installed in the next few weeks, recruitment efforts are underway by both the Admissions team and Jeremy Sutton, the new site coordinator and an Open House is planned for Thursday, March 14. The most exciting news came this week when the first student was registered for classes at the new location. The young man is a student at Fort Zumwalt West High School and plans to start the Automotive Maintenance Technology program in June.
