2 DOLPHIN DAY 2018 AT THE COLLEGE CENTER On Monday, August 13, 2018 over 130 students visited the College Center in Fountain Valley for Dolphin Day. This event is designed to help incoming students learn to navigate the services and support we offer at the administration building and featured a passport tour of the different departments they will be utilizing throughout their time here. There were exciting giveaways at the Bookstore, a college-wide office decoration contest, and free food! Many students enjoyed getting a photo with Finn, our College mascot, and got to take care of their pre-semester to-do items while they were here. Have you visited the College Center in Fountain Valley? If not, come by for a visit and check out the offices still decorated with the Dolphin theme. For more information about upcoming events and student activities, please studentlife@coastline.edu COASTLINE GALLERY FEATURED IN LA WEEKLY On August 15, Coastline was featured in the LA WEEKLY for being one of the 15 best art galleries enlivening SoCal College Campuses To view the article, please click on the link: oastline Art Gallery at Coastline Community College California is home to 114 community colleges, many of which come with their own galleries, like the one at Coastline Community College, which began as a correspondence school in 1976 and has since evolved into an esteemed institution with three mini-campuses. Coastline Art Gallery is dedicated to hosting year-round events, but it's not all about hanging pictures. The gallery prides itself in its programs, panels, workshops and art sales, all of which focus on works by local SoCal artists with a variety of backgrounds and styles across a range of experience levels, just like the population of California it serves. 3 GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE LAUNCHES I AM GWC CAMPAIGN AT WELCOME DAY Golden West College launched its I Am GWC campaign on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, timed to the college s Welcome Day orientation for new students. The campaign promotes and celebrates GWC s diverse student community with authentic images featuring current and recently graduated students on campus. Three I Am statements give extra insight into each student s individual background and interests. A total of 23 students participated in the campaign, and 24 double-sided banners can be seen around the central quad and main campus entrances. At the start of Welcome Day, close to 600 new students filled GWC s Main Stage Theater. President Tim McGrath gave a warm welcome to the crowd, then invited 13 students from the campaign to join him on stage, each holding their framed I Am GWC poster. The students shared personal stories of why they are GWC, and offered advice to the new students on how to get the most out of their college experience. All of the I Am GWC posters can be found at GWC students surround President Tim McGrath at Welcome Day 2018
4 Orange Coast College Faculty Hire Brings Wealth of Knowledge to Dance Program Orange Coast College has hired renowned dancer Rachel Berman as its newest dance instructor. Berman comes to Coast from New York City via Las Vegas, where she was an artist-in-residence at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, a teaching artist at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts and where she set Paul Taylor s masterpiece Company B on the Nevada Ballet Theatre. She s also no stranger to Orange County, having traveled back and forth to Costa Mesa from Las Vegas in order to teach modern dance and dance history at the American Ballet Theatre /William J. Gillespie School, housed at the Segerstrom Center. I have been a dancer, educator, manager, producer, fundraiser, advocate and writer but am happiest in the studio working with students, passing on the knowledge that was given to me and gleaned from an extensive career, Berman says. Originally from Hawaii, Berman has had a diverse career in the field of dance, the bulk of which was a decade spent as a principle dancer with the Paul Taylor Dance Company. She was featured in the Academy Award-nominated documentary film Dancemaker and was Dance Magazine s cover story in March Berman also has performed with Ballet Hispanico, May O Donnell, the American Repertory Dance Company, the Joyce Trisler Danscompany, and the hula companies of Nā Lei Hulu I Ka Wēkiu and Pua Aliʻi ʻIlima O Nuioka. Ms. Berman served as associate producer for Dancers Responding to AIDS; company manager for Company C Contemporary Ballet; the development officer for the Taylor Company; and was the programs manager at Dance/NYC, a dance advocacy organization that works in alliance with the national service organization, Dance/USA. She is a freelance writer for Dance Magazine, Dance Teacher and Dance Studio Life. I have been looking to relocate to Southern CA as I felt there were many more teaching opportunities here. I have taught master classes at UC Irvine, Loyola Marymount, Pomona, USC, CSU Long Beach as well as at OCC, Berman says. I really enjoyed the students at OCC and felt they were open and receptive to learning. When the position became available I jumped at the chance. I m excited to start a new chapter in my life and make a home at OCC where I can nurture the next generation of artists in whatever they choose to pursue. Berman earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Purchase College, a Master of Fine Arts from Hollins University/ American Dance Festival, and is an ABT Certified Teacher in Pre-Primary through Level 3 of the ABT National Training Curriculum.
5 At Wednesday s Citizen Oversight Committee (COC) meeting, a new member keenly observed that we must consider the great diversity of our student population and the range of their needs when building a contemporary learning environment. This is an excellent reminder that our facilities should aim to support the teaching and learning of all students, including those from underrepresented backgrounds. The comment is also a reminder of the unique charge we have from the State of California. That charge is to serve every student - traditional, non-traditional, Veteran, former foster youth, adult learner, homeless, and more. In meeting this broad charge, the Coast District has the opportunity and privilege to support individuals academic goals and the social and economic health of an entire region. Monday is the first day of instruction at our three colleges. As we begin this new academic year, I am reminded of this terrific educational and social mission we have in the Coast Community College District. Have a great weekend, and enjoy your first week of the fall semester, John Weispfenning, Ph. D. Chancellor
