2 History of the Chanticleer at University In the mid-1960s, a group of Coastal students and their English professor brought up the idea of a new mascot. At the time, Coastal's athletic teams were known as the Trojans. With serving as a two-year branch of the University of South Carolina at the time, many people began to push for a nickname that was more closely related to USC's Gamecock. Based on the iconic legendary rooster from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales, who was a highly intelligent and strong leader, the Chanticleer is one of the most unique mascots in collegiate athletic history. The Chanticleer gave CCU a mascot that resembled the Gamecock but still had its own identity. On July 1, 1993, USC- College became an independent, state-supported institution when it separated from the USC system. Although some people thought it was time to replace the mascot, the Chanticleer reigned supreme with its devoted fans. Today, the Chanticleer has made a bold, well-known name for himself worldwide and continues to capture a place in the hearts of CCU fans. 2002

15 Coastal Fun Facts On the evening of July 23, 1954, a group of citizens met in the Horry County Memorial Library to discuss the creation of a local college. Junior College opened Sept. 20, 1954, as a branch of the College of Charleston. Edward J. Woodhouse served as the founding director from , followed by two more directors and four chancellors before Ronald R. Ingle was named president of University when we became independent in David A. DeCenzo became the second president of CCU in The first building on campus was built in 1962 and was named for longtime chancellor Edward M. Singleton. Atheneum Hall served as the first Student Union. Ex Libertate Veritas is the motto on the University seal, meaning From Liberty, Truth. Coastal s first live Chanticleer mascot made his debut at the 2011 Homecoming football game. Students voted to name him Maddox to honor Coastal basketball coach and English professor Cal F. Maddox. OSAL hosted the first-ever concert in The HTC Center in Spring 2013 featuring Phillip Phillips to a sold-out, 2,996-person crowd. Coastal Tradition Events CINO Day: Since 1972, Coastal has been celebrating the end of the school year with this huge event on Prince Lawn. CINO Day brings together students, faculty and staff for activities, food and fun! In 2013, CINO Week was created to continue the celebration through the entire last week of classes, ending with CINO Day on Friday. CINO Quest: This three-day summer leadership program was created in 2010 to give incoming freshmen an opportunity to build their leadership skills before they start school in the fall. CINO Ignite followed as a sophomore leadership development program. CINO TIE Welcome: Formerly known as Welcome Week, this is a weekend full of events and sessions for incoming students to get acclimated to the University before classes begin on Monday. Club Recruitment Day: Student organizations promote themselves at tables on Prince Lawn each semester to encourage new membership. Greek Week: Each spring, fraternities and sororities participate in a weeklong competition for the coveted Greek Week trophy. Homecoming: A weeklong celebration of unity and competition culminating with the Homecoming football game on Saturday. Coastal Traditions C-I-N-O: Coastal Is Number One! CINO was adopted in the late 1960s by the Coastal cheerleaders. Coastal s first mascot was called CINO. The costume, complete with feathers, was made and worn by one of the cheerleaders. The Chauncey hand sign was created by SCREAM in It can be made by pressing your right index finger and right thumb together and keeping your other three fingers extended. This hand sign is used at the end of the University Fight Song and during free throws at basketball games. The Beaty Memorial Victory Bell is rung after each Chanticleer football victory. The bell, located outside Brooks Stadium, was donated in honor of Chad Michael Beaty, a founding father of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity at CCU. Late Night Bingo: This hugely popular event takes place every other Thursday at 10 p.m. in Hicks Dining Hall. Beware: This is not your grandma s bingo. Late Night Finals Frenzy: Faculty and staff serve students a late night meal in Hicks Dining Hall to give them a break from studying for finals. Relay for Life: Since 2005, CCU has hosted one of the highest-earning Relay for Life events in the country per capita. In 2013 alone, CCU raised $130,000. Teal Day: Each year, in conjunction with the University s Founders Day, Coastal Activities Board takes over Blanton Park and turns it teal in honor of our University s founding. TEAL TUESDAY: Created by SCREAM President Mary Ewen in 2011, Teal Tuesday is a weekly holiday for where everyone wears teal to celebrate their CCU pride.
